My hubby and I had lunch here today and it was so annoying to say the least. The food was good but we were bombarded with the kitchen people yelling at the top of their lungs concerning the orders, what was up,Got it, and numerous other comments. This was one of my favorite hambergar stops so had been on a low carb diet for sometime So thought of a little splurge sadly very disappointed the girl taking our order was friendly, place was clean, order came quickly BUT the hamberger patties were surprisingly thin, and small my patty and my grandsons were half the size of the bun and after 2 bites the bottom bun fell apart which I guess was ok since the pattie was only large enough for 2 bites! To make things even worse The fries were undercooked also.unfortunatly we would have done better at Mcdonalds..Not going to be repeating this visit again. Sometimes you're in the car and you just need to feed the back seat crew as you head down to Sunriver... in which case this place is convenient, friendly, inexpensive and not bad considering it's fast food. Over the last decade or so as I have contemplated the burger, I have often despaired that icky pre-shaped chemical-infused patties are so abundant and simple, fresh, hand-formed beef burgers are impossible to find. Especially in Salem. Normally I like to avoid chains, but this is a welcome addition to the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Salem cuisine. I was kind of disappointed that they don't sell shakes at Five Guys Burgers and Fries, but it's not like the name of the place didn't prepare me for the let-down. I guess I have been conditioned to need a good milkshake with a great burger like this one(especially if it is served in a place with shiny red and white tile). One of the slogans of the franchise is that they don't have freezers, and to sell shakes, I guess they'd have to gear up with some pretty industrial freezers. Oh well. I was warned in advance by my daughter to order the "little" burger (meaning one patty) but I never listen to her so I ordered a "hamburger" and ended up taking the second patty off. They have all kinds of toppings available and they are all free. I always trust the chef so I ordered "all the way" which came with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup and mustard. This was a great burger! The fries are made from fresh potatoes and a large was the right amount for our family of four (who were all eating gigantic burgers). We ordered regular fries and I was glad because the burger was such a cacophony of taste that I still say that the Cajun style fries would have been too much for the excited palate (my family disagrees and wanted Cajun). If you want to know about Five Guys all you have to do is look at the worst rated reviews of this place. The lone "one star" was written by a vegetarian who was disappointed that his "burger" was just grilled veggies on a bun. I'm sorry that this vegetarian can't stomach neither meat nor vegetables and my advice on a remedy for this is sorely lacking. Perhaps a breatharian diet is in this person's future? The next lowest rated reviews complain about the grease. I guess this is a legitimate complaint is you like your beef made out of cellulose (yes, that's literally paper). Five Guys owes you an apology for their fatty, flavorful burgers that are never frozen and formed in house. May I suggest Sizzler to you where the burgers are stiff, dry, small and taste like the paper that comes out of Oregon's mills? That may be more your speed. Still another complains that the toppings were falling out of the burger. I, too, have had this problem at Five Guys. Sadly, the abundance of fresh cut vegetables just won't sit on the burger and I lose a good number of them. Luckily, some of the meat falls out as well, which is why I use a fork to eat the remnants after the burger is gone. Oh, who I am kidding...I don't use a fork; I shove those remains in my mouth with my fingers like a wild animal. To those who think the fries are over/undercooked or too limp/stiff, I guess you can't make everyone happy when it comes to hand cut fries. Pour vinegar on those bad boys and let 'em suck up that nectar, then dip 'em in ketchup. Sadly, although Five Guys is a Virginia chain, there is no Old Bay to be found for the fries. *sob* I should totally knock no less than two stars for this egregious sin but I don't think Oregonians would know what to do with Old Bay if I 'splained it to 'em. Last, it ain't cheap. Dine alone and you creep upwards of ten bucks. But, if you dine with others, split the fries between two or three or four friends and the cost is absored to a more reasonable $7 per head. Sadly, capitalism hasn't found a way to create a perfect burger, without any frozen ingrediants, where nearly everything is created on the premises, and delivered with a smile for less than $5 in the wealthiest country in the world. May I suggest to the 2012 Presidential hopefuls that before you fix the economy, remedy healthcare, or propose solutions to the nation's immigrations policy that you find a way to get us Five Guy's burgers in a more frugal fashion? read more

The second meal here was not as impressive, unfortunately. It wasn't a complete bummer (notice the three stars) but it was obvious that the staff was cutting some corners here. The three adults in our group all ordered the bacon cheeseburger and two of the three ordered A-1 on them. After 10 minutes the food was ready. We excitedly dug in only to find that none of the burgers had bacon on them. One person went up to the counter and told the manager working, and the manager handed him 6 pieces of bacon on a foil sheet. It was fine I guess, except that the bacon was cold :( Then the two burgers that were supposed to have A-1 didn't have A-1. So it wasn't a horrid experience, and I understand they're a new joint, but with 15 employees all working behind the counter you'd expect nothing to go wrong. read more

I have seen these places popping up all over Washington and decided to give them a try while I was on the road. All I can say is a place that lets you put as much on your burgers without paying extra is a huge plus in my book. I went for the smaller burger because the regular has two patty's (a little too much for me). The only problem was the bun needed to be a little sturdier to hold all the toppings; if I was I would have given a five. Oh and the fries let's not forget them, they are fresh cut so they just melt in your mouth. They also have peanuts you can eat while you are waiting for your burger. So we have been going here since they opened. The Burgers are juicy and well prepared. They have a plethera of toppings and you have them build it how you want it. The french fries in my opinion should be twice fried to be a little more crunchy. However, they do give you enough in a small order to feed a battalion of hungry soldiers. I love the free peanuts that you can throw the shells on the floor, although that just seams unnatural. All in all, a good place to get a good burger! read more

I saw a segment of some show on the Food Network about this place, so I had to check it out because the burgers looked so good. I found that there was a place in Salem, so I stopped in here on my way back to Eugene. The menu is pretty basic. One patty or two? Cheese or bacon or both? Pretty simple. they had a hotdog too, but I went with a double bacon cheese burger and fries. I waited about 6 minutes until my food came. Apparently, they don't use trays for people eating there because I got my bag loaded with fries. I couldn't even find my burger in there. Well, after I found my burger in the mountain of fries, I saw the giganticness of this beast of a burger. It's great because you can get tons of added fixings, or you could get none. It's up to you. Took my daughter and her friend here tonight and have to say I was very disappointed! I didn't hear anyone call out how many in the door, almost no interaction between the crew. I ordered a little bacon burger with relish and no tomato with BBQ. I ended up with tomato and raw onion on my burger and no BBQ sauce. The grilled onions were cold and the fries were limp and cold. Nicely done! Approaching the door to this fast food mecca, I was reminded of the food court of the Oregon State Fair. The aroma was intoxicating. My partner and I were meeting another couple here on Friday August 5th before a movie. Our time was limited, and I knew that this place could get busy, so we were lucky that we got in, ordered and were served quickly. To be fair, I have previously written about a Five Guys in McClean Virginia that served food I wouldn't serve to my worst enemy, AND this is the second time I have eaten at this location, (The first time I was not impressed), so I wasn't expecting great things. On my previous visit to this location, the food was passable, served luke warm and the fries were barely cooked. On this visit the food was hot, and the fries were delightful (grease soaked bag and all!) Each of the four of us ordered the double cheeseburger. We only ordered two medium fries because we knew the bag would be filled regardless of the size ordered. My burger was absolutely wonderful! Juicy, hot, and very big! Our little group devoured our burgers quickly and started working on the fries. Malt Vinegar is nice on fries, however, some plain white vinegar would also be welcomed. I have to agree with Chuck B. about the peanuts. While they are nice to have available, they are low grade. However, they are something to snack on while waiting. I am not sure about the need for 8 employees to be sitting around the dining area though. Not sure if it was shift change time, or if they just are paid to be available during peak times. We were there around 7 p.m. there were 4 staff cooking and 2 taking orders, but the 8 sitting in the dining area chatting perplexed me. One nice feature of this location is that they have some outdoor seating available. Oh warm summer days and evenings, this is a welcome addition. Price point is fairly inexpensive. The total cost for the four of us was just under $35! My partner and I don't eat fast food that often, but when we do, this is the top of our list. We will be back. read more

I went to this location when it first opened and the line was out the door. The burgers were delicious wrapped in the tin foil and the fries were thick and fresh. The large fry will easily feed 2 and the cajun seasoning gives it a nice kick. However, on my last several visits I have walked away feeling grossed out. The fries taste and smell like the peanut oil is not being changed frequently enough and have an odd aftertaste as well as oily and limp. The hotdog buns have changed and are now the standard dinky hot dog buns you would buy at the store. (I was told by a cashier that all the buns are made in house....) On my last attempt I watched the staff wipe down a table with a rag, then take out the trash, go directly to cleaning the garbage with the SAME rag and then continue back too cleaning the tables..with the SAME rag. Not once did she wash her hands or change rags. This was the last time I ate at Five Guys. read more

Sometimes the experience doesn't live up to the hype. I'd heard (and read here) that Five Guys was a great burger joint, so I finally went. I ordered a double with grilled onions and bbq sauce. I watched as burgers were being slapped together with reckless carelessness, yet I still had to wait about 15 min. I got my food and sat down to eat, wherein I found that the "grilled" onions were basically warmed, not really cooked, the burger, though juicy, was fairly tasteless, and if there was bbq sauce on it, I couldn't tell. I did find it interesting that the day I visited, the fries were made from potatoes grown about 10 miles from where I grew up; a nice touch that pushed my score up a star. read more

Delicious, real food for a cheap price! I go here all the time. The burgers are great and so is their grilled cheese! But what really makes this place for me is the fries. The Cajun fries are the absolute best and they come with so many! Love how you can order online so you don't have to wait in line. I always take forever deciding which toppings I want so it saves me and many others lots of time. The only problem I ever had was that once they forgot the bacon in my bacon cheese burger. HELLA OVERRATED. I had heard about Five Guys for some time since they have locations in California as well, so when I came home to Salem to visit and saw that there was a Five Guys, I jumped on it. I wanted to like them, I really did, especially since it's surrounded by most generic fast food joints that aren't nearly as fresh. We had ordered around 8 burgers (hamburgers, cheeseburgers, some Little sized and some regular) and fries Five Guys style as well as Cajun. The fries were automatically a no-no for me since they were so soggy and limp. Then, as we unwrapped our burgers, it was a hot mess of ingredients as things were falling out with each bite -- we definitely burned through tons of napkins to stay clean. I've been watching this place since moving to Salem a couple of months ago. I finally got the chance to go in the other night... My son had a football game that night against West Salem (they lost). We sat most of the game freezing our butts off but during the last six or seven minutes of the game (football minutes being a lot longer than real minutes) it rained on us. Being new to Oregon, we didn't bring our umbrellas. So we sat it out, watching my son and his team. When the game was over and he was all cleaned off, we decided to take him out to dinner as an after-game celebration. We were driving around looking for something, not wanting the standard fast food fare. He mentioned earlier that he wanted a burger and fries, so finally it dawns on me...FIVE GUYS BURGERS AND FRIES...DUH! We walked in and could tell that they were close to closing for the night, with about 25 minutes to spare. That didn't deter the person behind the register though. He was happy to help us learn the procedure and menu for FGB&F. After placing the order and finding our seats, we notice that they have boxes of peanuts everywhere. So we go over and help ourselves to a bowl of peanuts. Delish...and a great idea. After about only a seven or eight minute wait, and a couple cups of diet soda pop, our food comes out to us. We weren't called out by a number. Not sure if that's the standard, or what they do on a quiet night, but cool anyhow. I ordered the cheeseburger, and my son ordered the hamburger. My wife opted not to eat, having eaten nachos and such at the game. We also ordered a large cajun fries. On mine, I put the standard burger supplies of ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions (raw), tomatoes and lettuce. But when I bit into the burger, there was a flavor explosion in my mouth. I was truly surprised by this burger. Cooked perfectly. Not dry or overdone. Nice and juicy, it was. I inhaled it so quickly, I wanted another one just to keep enjoying the flavor. My wife was busy on the fries, even though she said she was full. They were good. Very flavorful. Almost a bit too much for fries. But I devoured them with a few sides of ketchup. No problem. I will definitely be back many, many times more. I would definitely say that this is one of the better franchise burgers I've ever had. Much better than any fast food, and better than In-n-Out Burger. They said they get a lot of comparisons with them, but I feel that there's no comparison to the other company. Menu is simple. Choose what burger you want. Standard is a double burger with/without cheese. From there, you choose all the toppings you want on your burger. They are all included, no matter how many you choose. So you can have your burger with as many or little toppings as you want. Being a lover of flavor and taste, I opt to stack mine with as much stuff as you can...double up on the onions, pickles,and tomato please! read more

An older male cashier greeted me and asked if I had ever been here before. When I shook my head no, he gave a nice, five-second rundown of their offerings. I went with the little hamburger "all the way" -- but no mayonnaise for $3.59. Basically, "all the way" or "everything" would get you mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, and mustard. But again, I told them to 86 the mayo. As an aside, you can also ask for toppings like relish, fresh onions, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, BBQ sauce, or hot sauce on your burger. All toppings and condiments are free! It was a pretty good burger, and they filled my order properly (yup, no mayo). While all their beef patties are cooked well-done, the beef remained quite juicy. But what really made this burger, in my book, was the grilled onions and mushrooms. They brought a new dimension that not all burgers "with the works" will give you. This is not your run-of-the-mill fast-food burger here. Going here and eating this burger after celebrating our great nation's birthday was a kickass idea. Not too many items are more American these days than a hamburger. I like that you can customize your burger in a ton of different ways. I did have a few concerns. First, I did think that the patty was a bit small -- which is probably why people get the regular-sized burgers that have two of those patties encased inside the bun. Second, at first glance when unwrapping the foil, the bun looked a bit shriveled or slightly crushed due to a little careless handling from the food handlers. Finally, some of the fresher, raw vegetables -- like the lettuce and tomato -- were already losing their freshness due to the numerous warm/hot items surrounding it. The lettuce (just your regular head lettuce) in particular was practically wilted. They could have considered a lettuce like Romaine that has a stronger likelihood of holding up to the heat. I think it's important to keep the cold condiments very cold (I even think ketchup and mustard should be cold, but it won't matter to the vast majority out there) and the hot condiments nice and hot until the very end. For people who do not want a burger, they also offer hot dogs. At the Lancaster location, a Kosher style dog is $2.99, a cheese dog is $3.79, a bacon dog is $3.79, and a bacon cheese dog is $4.19. Maybe you're a vegetarian? Five Guys offers a veggie sandwich ($2.69), a cheese veggie sandwich ($3.09), and a grilled cheese sandwich ($2.69). Let's not forget about the fries, coming in regular ($2.89) or large ($3.59) sizes. You can get it "Five-Guys" style or "Cajun" style. I'm not huge on French fries, so unless I return with a friend, I'll pass on those. Five Guys has won awards for their fries as well, so I'm sure they are quite good. They fry the fries in no-cholesterol peanut oil. My friends told me to check Five Guys out because they thought the burgers were pretty damn good. While I did list my concerns above regarding the burger, I generally agree with my buddies. If I return, I'll probably sample their veggie sandwich next, just to see how they cater to the vegetarian. read more

Love their burgers, but this location in particular is extremely bad at getting orders right. Every time I or any of my family members come here to order they always forget something. I don't remember the last time I've come here and they've gotten something right. Just today we went there and I ordered a cheeseburger with grilled mushrooms, lettuce, and heavy mayo. They completely forgot the mushrooms, the buns were smashed to oblivion and both my patties weren't whole. I really do enjoy the food here and have nothing against the staff.
