Byron - Proper Hamburgers - Inside Entrance

Byron - Proper Hamburgers

I was in the mood for a burger that was not the typical fast-food fare, so I decided to give Byron…read morea try. I don't typically like chain restaurants, but at least this is not a huge international chain. I ordered the double bacon, medium, with fries. I was thrilled when the fries arrived: I didn't realize they were the shoestring type, which are my favorite. And they were nicely cooked; crispy on the outside, but still fleshy on the inside. Many placed overcook this type of french fry and you end up with just a crisp instead of a chip. The burger was good. After picking it up, I realized I could never bite it without making a huge mess, so I took one of the patties off to eat last. The burger had good flavor, but the patties were more medium well instead of medium: they advertise that medium will have a little pink, but mine had no pink at all. I was very glad I didn't order the medium well, or it may have been overdone. The bacon was nice and crispy, but still tender: I didn't have to worry about taking a bite and pulling the entire piece of bacon out of the sandwich because you can't bite through it. The cheddar cheese was an unexpectedly nice touch. Back in the US, our standard cheese for burgers is American...mostly because it melts so well. But American cheese doesn't have much flavor on its own. This cheddar looked more like a cheese sauce because it melted completely, but the sharp, dry taste of the cheese contrasted nicely to the sweetness of the bacon. The pickles were not quite dill but also not quite sweet pickles: they were somewhere in between. I almost asked for more just to give them a taste on their own because I enjoyed them so much. The staff were wonderful; both of the servers I interacted with were fun, informative, and very helpful. As a tip to those who travel around the UK: I noticed there were cards on every table with the Jack of Diamonds. When I asked why, the staff told me that each location has a different playing card. If you visit all the locations and collect a full deck, then you get treats from Byron. Apparently there have only been a couple of people to successfully complete the deck, but it would be an interesting challenge!

What an incredible find while abroad. My favorite food, by far, is a cheeseburger. Leaving the…read morestates for four months left me with pretty much Five Guys to satisfy the craving. Butch Annie's is the one of the best burger joints I've ever had. And in the UK, too!! Best was the Jack and the Rosemary chips. Liked the shakes, liked the Oh La La. Servers were kind and prompt. Fun ambience.

The restaurant description: Finest dry-aged beef, cheddar cheese, tomato, date & walnut jam, caramelised onions, rocket, honey & truffle mayo. I had the burger sans onions and it was quite good. The sweetness of the date & walnut jam was a nice balance to the umami flavor of the beef. The bun held up well with all the ingredients in-between which made for a pleasant dining experience...if you've ever had a burger on a disintegrating bun, you'll appreciate a good quality bun like they use here. The Parmesan and Truffle Chips we're just okay. Not much parmesan and any truffle oil used was not detectable. I would probably just recommend the regular chips instead. Overall I'm recommending Butch Annie's for when you're in Cambridge and craving a high quality burger. They also have a pretty good Classic Rock playlist going (for your listening pleasure) so your ears don't get jealous of your tongue.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Harry curling up at my feet during his first outing in a restaurant. Really impressed with GBK's policy on service dogs in training.

Never in my life did I think I would be giving a UK restaurant a five star review. Normally when I…read moretravel I am desperate to try new places and never visit the same restaurant twice. Perhaps its because the alternatives are drearily subpar or the fact that you can't ask for more than a good burger but I've now been to GBK twice in two days and am considering completing the hat trick tomorrow. The burger quality is very good and despite the burger not being large (by American standards) it comes on a nicely toasted bun with a load of toppings. The burger cannot be picked up and eaten without being cut. Now, a good burger alone would be tempting but the options are various and delicious. I had a Habanero burger on my first visit and the sauce had a very nice kick to it, unlike other places that weaken the burn this was full of it. My second visit saw the consumption of a Blue Cheese burger and while my aorta said no-no-no my stomach said yes-yes-yes. Highly recommend.

What I particularly enjoy about GBK is that they are happy to turn any burger vegetarian, meaning…read morethese guys have by far the biggest range for people like my partner and me. Furthermore, all their meat is ethically sourced (red tractor rather than soil association though), which means a vegetarian out of humane reasons can sink their teeth into a chicken burger here with minimal qualms. Their smoked chilli Mayo, green goddess sauce, bottomless ginger and lemongrass fizz and skinny friend add the delicious details to an already tasty meal. The restaurant itself is nice and clean with an intentional diner atmosphere. The service has always been excellent. Seating outside is pleasant and not too noisy with a lovely view of a water fountain. However usually that isn't quite enough to get five stars from me. Generally we'd be looking at enthusiastic four stars. But our last visit really added that final star of excellence in my mind: You see, I am currently training a service dog and part of what makes that particularly hard, is that it is almost impossible to find places that allow you to practice. The special scents and excitement of a burger place are hard to recreate at home. Restaurants will often allow you to sit outside, but if you are not rearing a winter hardy breed, that is unhelpful in winter. Thus, imagine my surprise and delight when I called ahead to Milton Keynes GBK and was informed that they kept a special table specifically for service dogs in training. It turned out to be right next to the door, making emergency dashes easier and keeping us out of the way of other patrons. The staff was exemplary and ever so kind. The cooks cooed, but refused to touch him as otherwise they would have to disinfect both themselves and the kitchen, which made me feel rather pleased about the strictness of their hygiene rules. All in all it was an amazing experience and we will definitely be back for some more practice (and delicious burgers). In my mind going that extra mile for their local disabled community most certainly makes them deserving of that fifth star!

This place does exactly what it says on the tin... Burgers! And good ones at that!…read more This is a brand new restaurant open this weekend, they have a sister restaurant on Whiteladies road (just a few miles away) which has really taken off, so it seems like the natural thing for them to do. So tonight was really busy, pretty much every table taken, this didn't matter though we were shown straight to our table and given menus. You place your orders on tick box forms, and then give them back to the waiting staff. There's loads to chose from with out being over whelmed. Basically you chose your meat (or veggie burger) there's about 8 options inc lamb, chicken etc. then an extra filling, 2 sauces and a side all for around £8, bargain! Food was delivered to the table within 10 minutes, I would highly recommend the 6oz beef burger, grilled bacon and blue cheese with a side of fries, yummy!!!! My friend had the 6oz beef, Cheddar and onion rings which look equally delicious and somewhat mouth watering! Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the service was faultless. I really like the decor, clean, crisp and modern with no gimmicks which is a refreshing change to some other burger places around. They have an out side decked sitting area at the front, which considering this place is on a bustling high street really catches your eye and quiet inviting. Great for couples and small groups, I probably wouldn't want to take a big group of rowdy friends, apart from anything else they probably wouldn't fit many in. I would definitely go back and recommend to others.

The service was excellent, the staff were very friendly, welcoming and very helpful to me with my buggy - there are some steep steps to get up to get into the building but someone came and helped me in (not sure how wheelchair users will get in but I'm sure they'll have that covered) I opted for the straightforward beef burger and my friend went for the wild boar burger, I had pulled pork and cheddar cheese as a topping (pulled pork on a burger it would turn out is delicious) I loved the fact that you got free refills on soft drinks, left there buzzing having drunk way too much coke!! I ordered corn On he cob as a side as my baby loves it and also some hash browns. The only thing stopping me from giving this 5 stars was the chips, we went for hand cut chips which were more like wedges than chips and not that nice, next time I will go for fries though and maybe I'll update this with an additional star. I also do fear that on a busy week day lunch time the place may become too rammed up with buggies as north street is parent central, I'm sure the management will be able to come up with an innovative solution though. All in all a very nice meal, we didn't pay but if we had I would have come away feeling that I had got very good value for money.

I know Mcdonalds isn't what we traditionally think of as a place to go when you're on a diet, but…read morehonestly if you look at their menu and the breakdown of fat, protein, calories etc. in each item, they really are trying VERY hard to provide healthier options - and the thing is, they're succeeding! Before my op to remove my gall bladder, I really had no choice about eating low fat food - it wasn't a case of being picky, it was a case of if I ate anything with too much fat in it, I got VERY ill. Of course this made eating out pretty darn hard to do, and believe it or not, Mcdonalds was one of the few places across the country where I KNEW with absolute certainty I could find something that was safe for me to eat. Ok, I had to avoid the fries, but I did have a choice of several salads, one or two chicken based burgers, and they even do a blueberry muffin that is low fat!!! (Incidentally it's one of the nicest blueberry muffins that I've tasted, so goodness knows how they do it!). I think the turning point for Macy D's was when they got slated in the news after that chap did his thing of eating nothing but fast food - supersize me I believe it was called. It was at this point that they seemed to start changing what they offered, and brought in things like fruit bags, fresh fruit juice, and various salad options. For me personally, it means that if we are in town and fancy a bite to eat, (even now I've had my op), I'm generally more tempted to go to Mcdonalds than I am to somewhere like KFC or Burger King, or even places like Nandos, because I feel like I'm having a tasty 'fast food' meal, but without the issues of it being unhealthy like there are with all the others. I think if I had kids, I'd certainly be much happier taking them here than to BK's.
