Came here finally after purchasing a bag of well roasted five elephant beans from a nice cafe in Mitte - Oslo Cafe. Greeted by an annoying Australian server who when I asked what cake he would recommend suggested one not currently available. Anyways in the time I was there the server was obnoxious to other customers, the barista was rude, the espresso was inadequately pulled, the cake was okay but mostly sugar, they indignantly closed 10 minutes early and turned away about 8 customers. I can say though that the furniture was nice. I would recommend concierge coffee rather than going out of the way for five elephant. read more

One of many coffee shops I visited on a recent trip to Berlin. I liked the neighborhood, which was a 30 minute walk from my place in Kreuzberg. Service was a bit aloof and not terribly friendly. I don't get that, given this is a small, independent enterprise. Coffee was good but didn't knock my socks off. The cafe's vibe was very young and English-speaking expat-y. Not a place I wanted to tarry. I finished my java and cake, and headed out. Nearby Gorlitzer Park is worth checking out though, for more local character and texture. Not my fave cafe in Berlin but if you're in the neighborhood you might give it a try. Maybe I hit it on an off day. read more

First time I stumbled into a coffee shop that claims to be coffee-specialists (have their own roastery no less and sell their brand across town) that doesn't have decaf. AT ALL. Not even in capsules, not to mention freshly ground. Wow. So if you're sensitive to caffeine or can't have it for any medical reason, there is nothing for you here. Seek your happiness elsewhere. Oh wait, there's hot chocolate which you could only have with normal milk or soy milk (no lactose-free/almond/rice or anything else) so say hi to diahrrea. And the non-decaf capuccino my girlfriend got came in the tiniest cup, almost the size of an espresso and only a tiny bit larger than the size of my desire to ever come back to this place. read more

Excellent, interesting coffee, but the staff make this place particularly great. Busy as it gets, they will discuss each coffee at length and recommend based on your taste (even if you're not fluent in coffee snobbery). Limited indoor seating (if you're anti-laptop, why not just not have internet and put tables in the uncomfortable computer area?) means you're likely to end up outside, warming your hands on your cup and breathing in cigarette smoke instead of coffee aroma. read more

I have to affirm the positive reviews here. They were the reason I came, when I happened to be staying a few streets away. The one of the best Milchkaffees/lattes I've had, and the pictured Philadelphia cheesecake is amazing--light, sweet, and tart. We went expecting it to be at least nearly as good as Bonanza in P'Berg so we were were both disappointed at the watery cappuccini we were served with half the amount of foam to be expected on a proper cappuccino. Trying not to contextualise too much yet but after having coffee in Stumptown, Portland which is how it should always be done, when is Berlin going to rise to the challenge of proper coffee? The coffee in Espresso Lounge in Bergmannstrasse was better than here and they don't even roast their own beans. Maybe it was the barista's training day so probably give it another chance, especially after hearing about the cheesecake being so good but only if we're passing by and not like today where we travelled a good few kilometres. This coffee shop was a block away from our Airbnb. It was the perfect place to start off your day. I had the drip coffee on Monday and a flat white on Tuesday. They were both very well done. I've read about complaints about the wait time but in my experience it wasn't that bad. There is a lot of outdoor seating and you can use your computer if you sit in the back. read more

This place had amazing espresso and cheesecake but I was a little taken aback when I was told they didn't have wifi. Maybe because the place is always bustling with people and the space relatively small that they don't want people hanging around too long on laptops or phones but for a modern shop I found it a bit odd. The interior decoration is both warm and chic with a mix of wood and metal. Overall I would return for the espresso but might take it to go. read more

Five Elephant is fantastic. Coffee there is of top quality and easily one of the best coffee cafes in Berlin.

We were there on a sunday.It was not to busy but we still got take away coffees and a choc chip cookie. The Service was friendly. The size and the interior design is nice and simple. There is a few tables outside. Since it is in a quite side street enyoing your coffee outside is possible. The coffee was luke warm, took a bit long to be made and was not as tasty as exspected. The cookie was the best thing.very good we ate every last crumb. But in the end not fantastic enough to travel half across the city again. read more

This place is a little hard to find, even if you're staying in Kreuzberg like we were. It's nice, and the coffee is really really good. The staff is a little less than friendly, though, and they don't really have many food options. I bought coffee to take home to family, and it was delicious. Me and my kids come here everyday as we live across the street. One star is for their baked goods. Great baked goods. They never have enough cookies though. One star for the staff. The staff are great as well. I could care less about the coffee, though I've heard it's great. The only thing about this place that is not to like is the types of clientele they attract. American hipster tourists! Blahhhh A nice cafe is a great thing to have in the neighborhood where you live, but our neighborhood doesn't need or want tourist magnets like this. i've come to accept that Berlin is chock full of little cafés and locals' haunts, but i still love the feeling of stumbling on my next favorite place. it's almost sweeter when it's by accident...and especially if it involves great espresso. 5Elephant is on the quiet+leafy eastern end of Reichenberger Straße, a mostly residential strip that adds to the pleasant surprise of discovering the specialty coffee roaster. the 2 young owners roast and sell a small range of fantastic coffees to drink in or take home, all with an environmentally- and socially-conscious slant: organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, or Utz Certified...(the smoky Java is probably my favorite). what's particularly fantastic here is they KNOW their coffee -- whether you want a simple cup o' joe or to actually learn something about the process of transforming beans to beverage, tell them what you like for coffee and they'll match your palate. this is (happily) no push-of-a-button-cappuccino like you find in so many bakeries in Berlin. beyond the coffee, the cakes and breads are also lovely and clearly have a loyal following - when i sit in the small café to work, locals pass in with surprising frequency to see if their favorite sweet is sold out yet. the Phillie-style cheesecake has all the flavor of a New York style, but with a lighter touch and the lemon tart is a great balance of sweet+pucker, but the winner for me may be the banana bread, which is moist but sweet and crunchy on the outside. 5Elephant's interior is both modern and warm (those two often don't go together...), with free wifi and lazy jazz usually sliding out of the stereo, making it a great spot to pause. sit at the outside sidewalk tables or in the large picture window with afternoon sun coming through the big tree out front, and 5Elephant will quickly move to the front of your list of favorite places to linger... read more

They were incredibly rude to us, for some unknown reason. They have a rule against laptop use at the tables, but when our group (three people who wanted coffee and food) noticed a guy already using his laptop at a table, we asked if we could as well. The guy said no, very rudely. When we asked why, he said, "We hate the way lots of laptops look." Then he said we could sit at the standing table. I've never written a review before, but my experience has promoted me to create a yelp profile...a couple of blogs purport that this place has the best cheesecake in Berlin, so I was excited to try it out. This place, seemingly staffed entirely by Australian hipsters prides itself on it's expensive coffee, so I had a cup of cappuccino with my cake. the cake had a nice fresh consistency though the base is too hard, and the cappuccino, watery, and served a little below optimum temperature, was deeply average. What left a really bitter taste however, was the service, which, depending on which hipster you managed to talk to, was either vague and aloof or downright rude. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff. The coffee was the best I've had in Berlin yet, and of course had to try the cheesecake since everyone seems to be crazy for it. It was pretty damn good, though perhaps not completely worth the hype... Chris, the owner of Five Elephant, loves his grandmother. And you will too. But it's not the coffee that conjures up this familial love It's the Philadelphia cheesecake. Grandma left the recipe and now Sophie in the kitchen is creating the goods. Or maybe they just got the recipe off the back of a box somewhere and this is just a pretty story. Do you care? You won't after one bite of this stuff. Cheesecake heaven. Now there you are drooling already and I haven't even told you about the coffee yet. It's the best I've found in Berlin yet. Honest to goodness. For me it's a bit of a trek to get down there, but every time I do, it's worth every drop. Chris has taken control of every aspect of that simple cup of coffee that he can and believe me, he's the man you want behind the wheel. He's a master with a keen eye for selecting the beans from small batch harvests, roasting to perfection, grinding fresh, flawless brewing, and quality serving complements. What you get is worth more than 10EUR a cup and it only costs around 2EUR. A steal of a deal. No joke. And atmosphere? That too. Locate yourself in a spot under one of the giant maps and tune into the squeals of delight from the cult coffee fanatics or dessert-lovers around you. Enjoy Five Elephant.
