I used to hate group fitness classes with a passion. I thought they were impersonal, lacked one on…read moreone time and would be embarrassing for a newbie like me to try. But, John and Anna have definitely changed my mind! TRX is a total body workout that tones, strengthens and builds muscles. I've only been to 5 classes but they are always fun.....difficult, but fun. The instructors were able to correct my position/posture, modify my moves and encourage me to go longer, faster and harder. It's always pleasant, easy to sign up, affordable (especially with their groupon deals) and on time. Classes are an hour and totally worth the time if you have it. Tip: bring water, a small towel and an open mind. Oh, and stretch. Stretch a lot. Like, seriously.....a lot.

I have done many personal training sessions at Summit Strength and I absolutely love it (the most…read moreafter they're over and I feel physically gratified and strong!!). I'd never done personal training before, but a friend recommended Summit and I've been partaking in several sessions monthly. Working out with a trainer is much better for me personally, and I've started to see results somewhat instantaneously. I certainly feel the difference between working out solo vs being held accountable and being personally coached. Via Summit I've worked with two trainers and fancied them both - Robert and John are awesome! John has years of coaching and training both professional athletes, various teams, and individuals such as myself. Robert was a college athlete and is in prime shape himself, and he really kicked my butt at my sessions. Bottom line, do you want to get in shape in a more structured, efficient manner or beat around the bush flailing on your own? I'll continue with my PT and am stoked to have found this gem of a gym (2 locations).

Orangetheory Fitness - Decked out for Mayhem 2025 May 17-23!!

Have you ever joined a gym and didn't see results? Orangetheory Fitness is NOT that! If you are…read morelooking for a physical transformation with personal coaches pushing you, and you enjoy workout-classes, this is it! I started with OrangeTheory Fitness (OTF) Tacoma, before the University Place branch studio opened, and my husband joined UP OTF as a new grand-opening-member. We used to go to the 5am classes together until Covid shut everything down. UP OTF kept calling me on the phone to rejoin, and after many bad-habits (overeating, drinking, late-night snacking, lack of exercise, binge-watching and sedentary-habits) formed and I was embarrassed of my weight-gain, I rejoined OTF UP last May. The thing I love about Orangetheory is, you really don't need to think: just show up! The coaches take over and when you leave, you'll be a sweaty mess! I can never get THAT good of a workout (burning 500 calories) on my own at a gym in under an hour (50 mins) in comparison. So, I've been showing-up, and guess what happened? My inner-athlete came out! My old-college-athlete, buried deep within my now post-50-year-old body, came out. My desire to improve and change took over. It was buried DEEP within me, under those layers of extra 35 pounds I'd gained post-COVID, plus another 20 pounds post college, but it became awakened! Orangetheory Fitness says, if you show up with the desire to change, you will burn 500 calories every class! I also joined Noom, an app on my phone to track and teach me about my dietary habits, as I knew I wanted to improve my nutrition habits. The combination of eating healthy + OTF, in the past 9 months I've successfully lost 37 pounds! And I'm stronger and healthier! I love the coaches encouragement and the music, at OTF. What they do is research evidence-based, so they will call you out by your name! They will push you to use heavier weights or run harder and faster. I needed that! I needed the push from people who care to help get me across my finish line of personal goals. I wasn't able to lose the weight on my own: I'd tried for years! I didn't stop exercising during Covid, but walking my dog isn't the same as being told to lift heavy weights. And when was the last time I'd chosen to run hard on a treadmill at another gym? I never chose the treadmill! And I would never get on a rower for 20 minutes! But at OTF I do! It's that herd-mentality of if the entire group is doing it, I will too! And at OTF I do what I'm told, and I love the results!

So this is not my first Orangetheory location... I do appreciate how consistent their gyms are, one…read morething they all have in common is how great the coaches are. In particular, I really enjoy Coach Marcus. I show up at 5 AM and he is raring to go... When I start, I'm always uncertain if I'm going to make it through my 60 min work out, but by the time I'm done, I am pumped but tired and really glad that I came. In addition to celebrating just showing up, Marcus has also celebrated my sobriety with me... When he sees me, he asked me "how many days?" and at first I thought he was talking about my workouts, but then I realized he remembered that I had gotten sober and he was Checking in with me for encouragement. This is not just a gym... It's a little bit of family. They all want to see you succeed. It's not the least expensive option, in fact it's not even close to it... But it's worth every penny. I will certainly keep coming as long as it's in my budget.

I have NEVER lifted weights before so CrossFit was all new to me!" I was impressed by how friendly and welcoming EVERYONE is from the young couple that own the business to the coaches to all the fellow people that come for a workout. With zero experience everyone was patient with me and walked me through the workout classes. The classes are in different levels. I really enjoy the classes for people 55 years and older. The workouts are designed for someone older or less skilled like me. They usually have between 10 and 25 people in each hour long class. The first 10 minutes or so are spent stretching and warming you up for the workout. They rotate between upper and lower body workouts (often each day has a combination of the two and then there is a cardio element. After my 20 visit pass ran out I chose a monthly plan that works for me. I can attend up to 4 classes a week and it costs me less than $5 a class. That is a great value for the workouts you get. In addition to the improved fitness I have also made some new friends and hope to keep coming for a long time!

I then got into contact with a few gyms in the area, but only one of them seemed like a good fit: University Place CrossFit. To me, this gym feels very inclusive. For someone like me who hasn't worked out regularly in 20+ years and has mobility issues, this place has been great. It's a smaller gym, the owners John and Ashley are great. The other members have been nothing but helpful and encouraging. I feel like I have a lot of very knowledgeable, fitness oriented individuals actively helping me feel better. To me, that's HUGE. anyway, after a few short weeks, coming in 3 times per week, I no longer need my cane and am experiencing far less pain. I went from barely able to walk to doing split squats and actual RUNNING! This place is great!

Case in point, on day one the owner diagnose an issue that I was having with my form for one of the Olympic, weightlifting movements, which another gym in the areas coaches hadn't noticed for seven months, and had led to an injury. Day one Joe diagnosed the problem and it was fixed without me even asking! There are two sides of the gym, dedicated for electric weightlifting on one side, and the other side, high intensity, interval training. This shit is easily accessible, clean, and has easy parking. It is not a globo gym, nor is it simply an iron fitness. There is space for what you need if it's a casino workout, or you're dropping in for open gym or individual weightlifting session. Coaches run classes on time, one hour, which is not the experience that I have had other community style gyms in the past in the area. American flag over the door, attentive coaches and community, never asking for reviews online (a great plus!), accessible in ten minutes or less from JBLM, Lakewood, all the way up to Ruston. Great location for access!
