So many reasons to hate the gym, yet I absolutely love going. This recently converted Virgin Active…read moregym was once Esporta, so it has always been a private member's gym, just picked up in price a bit once Virgin bought it. The facilities in here are fantastic. Huge changing rooms with televisions and decent sized lockers, a huge pool that's very rarely busy, an even bigger gym that is fully equipped with anything you could want to use to build muscle or lose weight, and a fantastic restaurant/cafe that has a fully stocked bar and a full menu (mostly of healthy foods!). There's also a shop that sells spa/beauty products, as well as large indoor & outdoor tennis courts. The membership is a bit steep, but it's worth it if you're gonna be using it a lot of the time.

Pricey but worth it…read more I'm thin & have no muscle end of. However with the help of Virgin Active's staff the thin ikea-like flatpack stomach is now become defined. The staff here are honesty second to none! They are always on hand to lend you help or advice into what you should be doing to work towards your aims. This is obviously a private gym with a hefty membership price for myself at £45 per month (This is the 18 to 25 plan) this comes with unlimited use of the pool and gym. All I need to be honest. I think at this price it keeps away the idiots who go in and flex there muscles till there bulging out of there arms and stare at you because your big or small. The members here are all there for the same reason, to get fit therefore I dont feel intimidated at all when I look at other guys my age who have bodies which should be in the weekly edition of Mens Health magazine. With a glorious pool, which is NEVER busy. Busiest I've seen has been 10 people in the pool. On a weekday at lunch time you can almost be guaranteed to get the pool to yourself. Steam room and sauna are also very popular with all members, the sauna is much more frequently visited by hairy men and the steam room more visited by the Hamilton football club! Only thing, the changing rooms are all communal. This dosent bother me, but it may bother others. The cafè which looks onto the pool is incredibly reasonably priced and tastes good! Steak for £5.80...WHIT!? Tastes amazing though! And the strawberry split smoothie is to die for! I'd highly recommend this to anyone wanting to get fit or tone up or what ever :) Great fun!

I'm trying to tackle my complete lack of motivation for exercising so I thought I'd check out this…read moregym as recommended by Amanda R. I got a 24 hour pass online for £5 to go for a look around and a go of the machines as well. The gym is easy to get to on Cathcart Road and has it's own private car park. We visited at a peak time and there was loads of spots so that's always good to know. To enter you need a pin number and then you stand in a very futuristic pod thing to be let in. You can sign up in the front area as well, in case you aren't already a member. There are lockers in the main area which means they are inside the secure doors, and visible to the whole gym. This was one of my worries about going to a 24 hour gym as I've heard horror stories about people's stuff being stolen - this seems like it might not be an issue here as you'd have to be pretty brazen to steal someone's stuff right in front of everyone. The machines are laid out in one main area which is huge - there is rows and rows of treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, rowing machines as well as a free weight area and machines. Then there's a proper weightlifting room if you're into lifting the heavy stuff. All the equipment I want to use is here, and they also have free classes (as well as some paid ones). There was a good mix of people and by that I mean it wasn't a total gym-wank gym so most people should feel quite comfortable here. The music was bad, but when is gym music good? Bring your own headphones and you'll be fine. I would have ranked this place a 4 star quite happily, but I needed some help from the staff when getting my padlock set up. She was so super helpful and nice about my extreme stupidity that it gets bumped up to a 5 star.

There's also a really big free weights section, but I haven't used that yet. The facilities are really good: nice and bright with a good changing area, loads of lockers, and good quality equipment that hasn't been battered about yet. I've not dealt with the staff yet, but they all look really friendly. There are personal trainers there, and the details are on the wall, but it would be great if there were prices up there as well. It's probably on the website, but something at the gym would be great. All in, this is a brilliant deal. For the price, you get membership for here and the one in the city centre, which is an absolute bargain. If you're looking for a new gym definitely give it a go.

Fitness first is the haven every woman has been looking for. How much do you hate going to the gym…read morein all your gym stuff just trying to stay fit and lose some weight when there are good looking guys everywhere. I used to be really self conscious when I was younger and went to the gym, I really didn't like carrying all that 'festive weights' and trying to get rid of it in front of people would clearly didn't need to. Now I don't care at all but Fitness First for women would have been great for me back then. The gym itself is so accessible being on Sauchiehall st so whether you are shopping, at uni or work, it is easy to get to, and even maybe for a pre-going out gym boost. I went to this gym on a free day trial, which you can get from the website. I liked my experience because no matter what, its nice to have a minute or two when you don't have to bother about your appearance. I didn't get a membership here because I would rather go to the gym with my boyfriend than by myself, and the membership fees are pretty steep for the facilities you get. But most in the city centre are, you are paying to save your time and be away from those terrible boys. :)

As soon as i entered i was by two smiley lovely girls who were chatty, i then asked were the changing rooms were as i hadn't been before and they were more than happy to give me a quick tour! The gym itself is a nice size not too big or intimidating, there is plenty of the usual equipment treadmills, cross trainers etc. There was also the usual weight machines but these were a bit dated and the resistance felt a bit weird to the more modern ones im used to, but nevertheless they did the job! I liked the fact the had punch bags and mitts etc meant i could take my frustration out!!! One more machine the had was the 'power plate' i had never been on one of these but had heard quite alot about them- like they give you a full body work out in 10 minutes. I saw a few women using it then fort i would have a go myself! There was a chart on the wall showing all the varying positions and techniques to make the most of the machine. I chose the positions and intensity then pressed start.... I have never experienced anything like it in my life i hated it!! the intensity was soo high i could feel my muscles rippling my eyesight was going funny n everything! I was supposed to hold it for 60 seconds but couldnt handle it haha! I take my hat off too anyone who can use it more than 1 minute!! :P

The building itself is really nice and seems pretty new. There is a gym here which I haven't checked out, as well as two large halls where they have karate/badminton etc, as well as roller derby training obviously. The hall is nice and bright and seems well maintained, and the bathrooms/changing areas are always clean. In addition to the gym and halls there's a swimming pool also available for public use as well as lots of classes on. The gym is closing for a couple of weeks while it gets upgraded so I'll stick my head in to check it out when it reopens in October 2013. The other important thing to know about this place is that it isn't available to the public during school hours so it only opens at 4pm for gym use, and closes at 9pm during the week. There's a good sized car park and I've always been able to get a spot.

One of the centres that doubles as a school sports hall, you can feel the place is slightly over stressed. There are usually at most half the changing rooms open and they are definitely lack in cleanliness. This is also true of the main sports hall and we've often found ourselves sweeping the floor to make the space usable. The centre has a large sports hall, spin and fitness classrooms and a decent sized gym. They also have a reasonable programme of fitness classes in line with those offered at other Glasgow Club locations. The main sports hall is rented by the cost of the number of badminton courts it contains so half the hall (4 courts) for 1 hour costs just under £50, pretty steep for an amateur sports club. The centre does however suffer from a problem with reliability, possibility another symptom of serving two masters. I've experienced several occasions where bookings have been cancelled last minute and halls double booked. Not great news when you've got 30 people coming to a training session. There is a general shortage of sports hall space in Glasgow so we've needed to keep using the hall here but if there was more choice I'd definitely be looking elsewhere....
