Pool or pulpit...that is the question!…read more Here at the Virgin Active in Repton Park, they placed a swimming pool right inside a church...how cool is that? When I first entered the pool I was really taken aback and quite mesmerized - it felt a little sacrilegious, but at the same time I very much enjoyed swimming in this beautiful environment. The gym area itself is also quite neat, as you sweat underneath a prettily-decorated vaulted ceiling. There's plenty of exercise equipment, although the weight-lifting area is a little small. This Virgin Active gym is in Repton Park, which was the site of the fomrer Claybury Hospital - a psychiatric hospital. Apparently there's still the ghosts of the past haunting these premises....

I joined this Virgin as it is my local club about a month ago. This Virgin club is nestled within…read morethe closed community (Repton Park), the best way to get here would be by car, although there is a bus stop just outside Repton Park it is still quite a walk when you are inside. This gym has a Costa Coffee inside next to the reception that also includes food (this can get slightly irritating when working out and smelling food) o_O The gym has quite a few treadmills, bikes, rowing machines, free weights, TRX etc, each machine has a tv screen with the ability to plug in your IPhone/IPod which allows you to listen to your music but also you can store your workout data to your phone too. The most amazing area in this gym is the swimming pool, it is absolutely stunning, the whole gym used to be a chapel for the mental institution, so the decor inside is beautiful. Within the pool area, you also have the sauna and steam room, along with some sun loungers and some juice to drink. The only gripe I have is that there is no air-conditioning (but I don't think there is anything they can do about that due to the building structure).

I loved my time at this Gym…read more The staff are so friendly and helpful and the facilities are great too! The building itself doesn't much look like it's a gym from the outside (I was living in Rainham for 4 years before I actually knew what it was! I thought it was part of the peoples home next door. Oh dear). It's a lovely old grade 2 listed building, think I was told it was 300 or so years old. But inside is nice and nicely air conditioned throughout. It's not your typical gym where everything is all in one room and you feel like you're being watched by everyone around you. It is over 2 floors and has numerous rooms all with separated equipment so if you're uncomfortable about being seen working out by others it's easy find a quiet room where you can go about your exercise without interruption. Changing rooms are nice and clean with sun showers which you need to book in to use but they're almost alway's available when you want them . The spa, sauna and steam room are also located downstairs which had a refit just before I left this gym (through emigrating, not anything against them) which unfortunately opened the week I left. urrghh. So I didn't get to see it but I heard it is great. The Trainers here are so friendly and as part of membership (if you choose to) you get regular meetings where you'll get weighed, measured and discuss any training concerns you might have which is really helpful if you have specific goals as they're all about helping you reach them. You can also get one on one Personal Training sessions for a small extra charge (I think £25 but are well worth it). A couple of classes are also available to take part in which you need to book in advance. While I was a member it was just Circuit Training and Leg's, Bum's and Tum's but was talk of other's. They also have a qualified beauty team on hand for the usual waxing, facials, manicure, pedicure, massage ect. Excellent for a bit of pampering after a hard workout. I enjoyed this gym so much that with the encouragement of the team I qualified as a Fitness Instructor myself - and took the course with them. Way better than any of the other bigger named gym's in the area.

The staff from my experience are amazing, and I have interacted with almost all, and had sessions with 2 of the staff members. They make working out fun! I also love how clean they keep the gym and how open plan it is (I'm a complete clostrophobe!) So in my opinion, more than worth the £10.99 per month!!

An ok gym if your after using cardio equipment, if your looking for free weights and kettle bells…read moreetc then this is the last place I would come. For starters there is only one Smith machine which isn't unusual for a gym but given its popularity there should be at least two, there is only one squat rack, and what I couldn't believe it's only one Olympic bar! Each of these pieces of equipment had at least 3 or 4 people waiting to use them! The weights area is generally small, there are 2 sets of each weights which is ok but since this is a budget gym every kid is on there trying to prove how much they can curl to each other; this means free weights are everywhere and I mean all over the place! No one puts the weights back and people sit on benches with 3 or 4 Sets of weights around their Feet! It was so hard to get a proper workout! The cardio equipment is next to top notch though and all brand new, the weight machines are ok, the lateral pull downs etc are all standard there are a lot of machines tho that are simply useless in my eyes. Some weird twisty abdominal thing which seemed to do my triceps more than anything, i did ask about the machine but the guy working there was none the wiser!? Lockers are tiny, Had to force and kick my gym back in! No locks on lockers (supply your own), one water fountain for the entire place which is pretty big by the way! All in all for cardio then yes for weights no no no! There are much better places that deserve your money.
