However, after my visit today it will be my last time coming to the Richmond District location. I was in the locker room texting when a staff member came up to me and asked me to use my phone outside of the locker room. Of course, this took me by surprise as I've been coming here for the last 3 years with staff members coming in to use the locker room restroom and never had anybody tell me to do this before. Anyways, this new staff member explained to me that having my phone out in the locker room could make others uncomfortable since every phone has a camera on it. I asked her if this was a new policy. She explained no it wasn't and that she was a new director and wanted to ensure the rule was enforced. Although I felt it was a bit unnecessary to enforce this rule, I'm not one to argue against the rules of an establishment. So my issue wasn't really with having to follow this new rule, but moreso with how the director handled the conversation. I was simply asking her questions because I was surprised about the rule being enforced, I never tried to argue with her, I only expressed my surprise as this was my first time hearing of the rule. She seemed to get a little irritated that I was asking her questions. She told me multiple times, "It's really easy to just go outside the locker room." As someone who has experience working in customer service, it's not the brightest idea to talk to your clients using condescending/infantilizing language. Of course I know it's not that hard to use my phone only outside of the locker room. And she kept repeating herself as if I was trying to argue with her that I should be able to use it inside, which I never did. To the new director, I would highly recommend using a more empathetic and respectful approach when you're telling your patrons about this rule. It's "really easy" to tell people, "I know it's kind of annoying, but we really value the comfort of all of our patrons. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience! Thank you for your understanding." So easy, right? And please try to work on understanding that people will be surprised when a policy that wasn't enforced before is suddenly now enforced. Anyways I added one extra star because the other staff members have been kind to me.

I love the lifting platforms where the squat racks are, and I think they utilize the space well eventhough it does get cramped in some places. Parking can be challenging in this neighborhood and I do wish they had some sort of hip thrust machine - they may have added that since I moved out of the area (I'm not 100% sure). I will say the owners are so receptive to feedback, and I can literally see that they invest the money they make back into their business. They expanded to the upstairs to provide more space to warm up, lift, and stretch. They provided more weights, machines, bands, and mats. Also, I mentioned they should have hairbands for women in case they forget them, and literally the next time I showed up they had them. They also do offer a free day trial (not super common in SF), and the owners are very kind and insanely accommodating. I'm happy it's not just a personal training gym like other places in the city and I feel like they fr wanna give back to the community as the owner did advocate to get a stop sign in a high traffic area. The owners and operators are super friendly and accommodating, it fr gives family business vibes. I love supporting black owned and family operated businesses. Overall, worth checking out and supporting if you live nearby.

Its all their fault because they fail repeatedly to deal with basic requests like updating a card on file, and repeatedly screw up on the computer system. The owner insists on not having staff and putting his personal number but he never is available and becomes irate if you "bother" him Gym is small and ill equipped. Very hot and smells bad. Never any staff there in case of problems like beings locked out. Cant get ahold of owner during normal business hours and constantly acts like he is being bothered if you report broken equipment or anything Fitness SF is better anyway. I was going to keep both but the owner of this gym doesn't reciprocate loyalty Go here if you wanna get locked out randomly and repeatedly and belittled for making perfectly reasonable complaints. Im sure he will reply here claiming i am the problem but fyi all i did was say "im sick of this" and i think anyone would be after repeatedly getting locked out despite paying $125 a month. i see people having issues with getting locked out basically every day. The owner is aware but choses to not staff his gym or switch software systems The floor uses foam tiles so when you try to wheel the benches around they become dislodged and jam and create hazards. The owner makes rash decisions like putting 100lb dumbbells on a rack not suitable for such heavy weights so they fall on your feet, he is too stubborn and gets overly defensive if you try to point out any issue, and tries to deflect (its always the members or the staffs fault, never takes responsibility or ownership)

You leave tired, but energized -- with that feeling that the hardest part of your day is already over, and you're ready to handle whatever comes next. I recently upgraded to three days a week, and honestly, I wish I had started sooner. My strength has improved, my cardiovascular fitness is noticeably better, and my back pain is gone. Most importantly, I can play with my three-year-old son without worrying about not being able to keep up with him. That alone has been huge. My advice: start with at least two days a week and stick with it long enough to see the gains. You will. Punch King is tough, but it works -- and you won't regret it.

That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area. Staff I've interacted with so far have been wonderful. Very glad to have found a great gym close by to where I live

Definitely a transit-first or walk-from-your-home-type gym, 9th and Irving is not known for its parking (though it IS known for it's ever-present MTA carts zipping around). Love the towels, the multiple bathrooms and showers, the fans everywhere, and the small outdoor area on the second floor.
