After scanning through the remnants of what may have been inventory (the disheveled shelves were quasi-bare, as though routed during a thrilling episode of Office Product Sweep) and subsequently tripping over a trashed Remington sitting in the middle of the floor, Hoyt announced himself. A pensive man, standing vigilant at the front counter, he explained "There's a reason that one's sitting there. Ink ribbon's jammed, so I put it on the heat vent to get it unstuck." Or something in that vein. See, I'm no typewriter expert and neither are you, so let's just come to a mutual understanding that was the reason a friggin' typewriter was resting merrily in the middle of an office product shop. He knew. Arguable, he knew everything there is to know about the device, and all its Luddite brethren. Kara needed to only give a loose description of the one she's had for years before Hoyt's encyclopedic registry spit forth a manufacturing date and a serial number. He talked of the printing's evolution, and we laughed about the smell of mimiograph ink (the purple shit from grade school). But then the conversation got ugly. Somewhere along the way, Hoyt got upset about the way we spoke of the typewriter. It's dinosaur function and mechanical pitfalls. He got real serious and told us, in as severe a non sequitur as I've ever heard, "Most people see the world in black and white. I live in the gray." A long, awkard silence. We thanked him for his time and GTFO.

I picked up a typewriter at the transfer station's "second chance" shop that probably dates back to…read morethe 1950s. Though it was in good shape, its ribbon was almost useless -- stretched and dried out. I went to Hoyt's to find a replacement. Right in Market Square, the shop was buzzing when I went in but I got quick help and excellent guidance. The woman recommended buying a standard 1/2" ribbon and rolling it onto the miniature spools that my portable typewriter uses. She also gave advice on freeing up some slow-return keys (they use liquid wrench, not wd40, and use very little at a time). It's hard to believe a little office supply shop can survive in this age -- it's a far cry from Staples or Office Max -- but this one is hanging on and that's a good thing.

Ultimately printing within minutes exactly what I needed. All the while his co worker complaining and moaning and groaning while his graciously helped her as he fulfilled my order. I will always come here for printing as it was a wonderful experience. Make him a district manager. All employees would benefit from his leadership!
