The crew at Wapiti were generous in recommendations for our light spinning set up and were able to help me get my permits for fishing for Banff and a day license although my son and I were only catch and release fishing. They sell lead free lures suitable for Banff and gave recommendations for locations along the Bow River in both Banff and Canmore although they have a variety of fly fishing and outdoor paraphernalia. Our first day we got skunked at Banff on the Bow River and snagged but we eventually were able to hook up to trout in Banff in Lake Moraine and along the Bow with new gear on a separate day and different spots along the other pedestrian bridge. Make sure to buy multiple lures if you're spinning cause there are a lot of trees and rocks to get snagged which are the structures that the trout tend to congregate. One thing they might not be able to help you with is FINDING PARKING near certain spots.

Although potentially not because the fishing hole has been around for so long that it is a staple to many people and many people know about it. I just hope people keep going even though there is nothing around there anymore. Even across the street the new grocery store is not open yet so no one is ever around that area besides to drive by or unless their specific purpose is to go to the fishing hole. I went to Bass Pro to exchange for a different size. Apparently that specific location is somewhat more Bass Pro than Cabela's (systems not updated after the acquisition) and could not do the exchange without the original printed receipt (I have the card my partner used but they couldn't look it up in the Bass Pro system and refused to do the exchange for size). This is inconvenient but not that bad considering standards of corporate greed, but the attitude and dismissive derision I received for wanting the correct size was kind of nuts. I've seen several people on the bigger pond kayaking around. Always good for people walking, jogging, spending time with family, kayaking, and taking pictures. Lots of people walk their dogs here, and as an In the fall, the changing colours are lovely to see here. It goes quickly though, so make sure you get down there when the leaves start to turn as they won't wait for you. It's a good area to see birds too. Geese are here it seems all year round. I think there are other seasonal / migratory birds which pass through the area as well. White American Pelicans summer along this stretch of the river during the summer. I've seen whitetail deer in this area a number of times. It's highly probably that there are occasional coyotes in the area and so like in many Calgary parks, be watchful of your dog. It's a wonderful park if this is your area.
