I stopped in for tire chains and was helped by the store clerk, TJ. He's the only reason I'm giving Fish Camp more than one star, because he was extremely helpful and friendly. I drove into the southern entrance of Yosemite and about 30 minutes in, I hydroplaned a little bit (I was going 15 mph) causing the front right tire chain to come partially off my tire. The park rangers spent about an hour trying to get it off, since the part where you hook the chain in was crushed shut and there was no way of getting the chain off the wheel. I obviously turned around and went back to Fish Camp to see if I could possibly get a refund. The older blonde woman was immediately rude and offered no help, whereas TJ stopped what he was doing to help me; since the store/lady wouldn't refund me or exchange the chains for me, TJ took out some tools to fix the hook part. I suppose they're in "working condition" now, but I'm not sure I trust them. Oh, one more thing, their chains are overpriced. I stopped at an auto/tire garage back in Oakhurst to have my tires/wheels checked after this whole incident and the guys there said Fish Camp charges the most around here. I paid $167 after taxes for my chains (I drive a sedan-sized car with 18s), whereas places in town charge under $100 (according to the auto guys). Anyway, don't go here for tire chains, go someplace else. read more

It was a Saturday and the guys were setup under a tent grilling cheeseburgers and frying regular and sweet potato fries. There was a little bit of a line getting into the park so we ate in the car on the way in. Great little store in a Yosemite gateway town. They don't have the most food options, but they do what they do well. I am admittedly averse to eating sandwiches usually, but I will stomach it for outdoors trips. I tried to order one on Easter night, but they had run out of bread! We came back later that week and bought some sandwiches one morning to bring on a hike. The sandwiches held up surprisingly well, with the hot dog bun holding together all the toppings they stuff in. The pastrami went so well with the lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and banana peppers I got; plus the hot dog bun was the cherry on top! I wasn't able to try the BBQ though. Loved this general store- and so VERY NEEDED in the town of Fish Camp! It's the only spot to grab food in town, besides at Tenaya Lodge just down the street. The store that never opens. This past weekend, we were lodging in Fish Camp and noticed this was the only game in town as far as groceries. Arriving late Friday evening, we checked the store hours listed on the front door. Open at 7am daily. Great. Wanting to hike the Mariposa Grove early the next morning--and out of many lunch supplies--we set our alarm for 6:45 and planned to make a quick supply stop on our way into Yosemite. When we arrived around 7:30, the store was not opened. There were a couple other guests waiting around their cars, one of whom said the place opened at 8. Maybe an aberration? We waited for a bit, noticing a man was setting up a bbq in the back. Cars continued to stop in, some staying, others leaving. Around 8 I figured I'd ask the bbq guy if he knew when the store was opening. He confirmed the store opened at 8 despite the sign reading 7, stating the woman who opened the store was running late which "happens sometimes". So... no aberration. Sounds like a poorly run operation. At 8:10 the store still wasn't opened and another man approached the bbq guy, asking what was going on. The guy repeated the store opened at 8. The other man said, "It's ten after." To his credit, the bbq guy handled the situation well--it seemed like he's paid to bbq, not cover for perennially late store clerks. Anyway, closer to 8:30 he grabbed some keys and opened the store for those of us still waiting. Nice of him to do that, but super awkward and inconvenient. And the store was poorly stocked compared to other rural markets I've visited in the state. (They only had ice, so we ended up getting most of what we needed at the Wawona store in the park land the much better run market in El Portal later anyway.) Once we were done, he closed it again. When we left, it was approaching 9 and the store still hadn't opened. Perhaps this is an isolated experience. But considering the 7am sign and the remark about tardiness, my guess is it's not. Regardless, this was my experience and it was remarkably bad. Maybe the bbq is good, but I'd suggest those seeking groceries or supplies stock up elsewhere. read more

She was the sweetest lady! It was good chatting about how beautiful the scenery was at Yosemite and Fish Camp at this time of year, nigh all year round. I'm sure she's a proud mother as she described the accomplishments and hopes of her children - one of them still avidly reading hardcover books and striving to become a Professor of English. Having taught English at the University level, I had to smile and encourage that! It is an area of study too often neglected, rare to be included in someone's aspirations, and yet absolutely empowering in many unexpected ways. I love shopping at small town businesses, so our family decided to make a special trip while staying at the Tenaya Lodge. We did not necessarily need anything, but just wanted to shop and grab some souvenirs. Unfortunately, as soon as we walked in we were greeted by an extremely grumpy old man. I then told my two young girls that we are just going to leave. The grumpy old man ran us out of the store using profanity and rushed us very aggressively, and went to his truck to grab something. Population in the town of Fish Camp is 200. This is the only store that gets us by. If you are out of anything, they will get you through. The prices might be a little bit higher than usual, but you are way up here in the mountains and it sure is convenient to get what you need, when you need it. Stopped in at Fish Camp General Store at dusk without a plan of where to go next. The three faces behind the counter gave me and my father our next steps! The woman and older gentleman helped us find an Inn (also beautifully wonderful) and even negotiated a room for us and added our name to the list. The young stunner at the counter laid out some must-dos and must-sees for the next couple days and we walked out of there with our week laid out. Great little convenience store that was practically next door to our cabin! We stopped here after a long afternoon of hiking Mariposa Grove; family was starving, and because it was 4:30pm, one of the other local sit-down restaurants was closed for lunch but not open for dinner yet. This place thankfully had a deli section. Very friendly gal prepared a delicious, fresh Italian sub for us, and chili dogs for the kids. Chili dogs - $4.50, nice-sized plate, comes with whatever toppings you want, (cheese, onions, jalapeños, etc), and a bag of chips. Hot dogs - $2.50, with a bag of chips. Sandwiches / subs - $10 for a 6-inch sub, which is a little pricey, but ingredients are super fresh, and it comes with bag of chips. And did I mention super convenient as well as tasty? I found out they make breakfast burritos too. Definitely gonna be here again. read more

I love this place. We went to spend two days in Yosemite and we stopped at this deli. They were so warm and welcoming. The food was great and their sandwiches were huge! I purchased sandwiches here multiple days during my entire July 4th Yosemite weekend. I would pack a picnic lunch for my family before we ventured to Glacier Point and the Valley. The sandwiches hit the spot, plus add a bag of cheetoes and cookies to this meal, on top of a picnic blanket in Yosemite was perfect after the long drive. The sandwiches here are made fresh to order. I prefer the bread roll, three meats, provolone cheese and some veggies. They make what you request, but I got lazy and showed them a picture off their yelp page. I sadly tried the premade sandwiches at the Tenaya Hotel, they suck or what I mean the bread sucks and little meat inside. The perfect country store! Not only do they have anything you may have forgotten to back before heading up but they make the most AMAZING sandwiches. We went one night for a pulled pork sandwich and it was so good we came back the very next night for the brisket. So tasty. Also everyone we saw that works there was so nice. Family and I were looking for a place to eat and came across this small general store advertising bbq on our way to Yosemite park. As we were driving by, there was this gentleman with gloves and mask waiting to make some yummy bbq. My daughter had a cheeseburger and fries, while my husband ordered the bbq special. Everything was made to order, my husbands burger consisted of bbq pulled pork on top of a meat patty and cheddar cheese. He loved his burger as well as my daughter. I ordered from the deli inside and the bread was very fresh and soft as well as the ingredients. You won't be disappointed!
