They provided water and while we were driving, our tour guide provided rich history of the valley and the land. We visited three excellent wineries and had different experiences at each of them. The first was a traditional and one of the oldest wineries, then we went to another winery that served white Pinot Noir, which was amazing, and we went to another modern winery with a really rich history as well, and it was by far the sleekest winery we visited. I love that they curated the tour to highlight different practices in organic and biodynamic farming. We learned a lot during our time together. We also had opportunities to venture off on our own, which served us well because we didn't want to feel forced to engage with people we were never going to see again. I highly recommend this tour company, especially if you want to learn about the terroir of the Willamette Valley. We also highly recommend visiting their beautiful and well stocked tasting room in Portland!

I wanted at least one winery pouring Sauvignon Blanc in a valley dominated by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He found Balsall Creek, then rounded out the day with Ridgecrest and Compris. All three were off the beaten path. No crowded tasting rooms, no tour bus circuit. Just remarkable wines and winemakers with stories to tell. Our guide Robert is a master sommelier, and it showed all day. My wife and I have tasted extensively in the Russian River Valley and Bourgogne, and Robert drew sharp comparisons between all three regions. He walked us through the Willamette's geologic history, from the Missoula Floods to the volcanic and marine sedimentary soils that define its AVAs, and connected it all to what was in our glasses. It was a full day of wine education disguised as a tasting tour. The picnic lunches, made by Wayne and his wife, were a highlight of their own. The turkey sandwich with apple and cucumber drew raves from the table. My vegan lettuce wrap was every bit as good. These were not afterthought box lunches. Our group of four had a roomy van to ourselves, which kept the whole day comfortable and unhurried. Yes, you can bring your own food n board. Our birthday girl brought a stack of pizzas, chips, dips and a birthday cake. Yes, they get you as up close to the falls as legally allowed. Yes, there are plenty of tables and comfy sofa style benches to relax on while you take in the sunset. Yes, they have bluetooth speakers so you can all jam to your favorite tunes. Yes, they provide a karaoke machine so your party can garble the 2 whole hours if they want. I really can't think of a downside except that the birthday girl kept saying that she wished the night wouldn't end. J and J occupies a long, narrow space, with wines displayed on the left wall, a couple of small tables along the right wall, and a comfy looking mid-century modern lounge area at the back. They will be doing joint events with their Woodsman Tavern neighbors, combining wine tasting with food experiences, making their location seem particularly auspicious. So far, the guidance at J+J has led us to new (to us) labels that we have really enjoyed. Great place for exploration.

The woman behind the operation is Fanny, one of the nicest ladies ever and she has some mean connections in the travel industry. Friends and family have enjoyed many of her great travel deals to Asia. She tends to somehow magically pull out cheaper ticket fares without having to tack on any additional fees or bundle it with tour related stuff. When tickets to Hong Kong were showing as $900 online, she managed to come up with $750 round trip tickets. This also included her service charges, which seemed so unreal to me. The DVD and Video rentals selection could be better. Though I don't come here for the show rentals, but I know plenty who do. The one general complaint most of them had was she didn't carry enough classic stuff that preceded decades worth of TV. In the end, a small local rental store can only carry so much inventory, so don't expect much beyond that. Never hurts to call in ahead of time, though her Chinese (Cantonese) is a lot better than her English. When it comes to travel perks, it's more than likely she'll be able to work a little magic.
