Handyside Plumbing, HVAC & Electrical - Jim C. Working on a American Standard Heat Pump

We will be Handyside customers from now on, and will always request David as our repairman. He identified the problem, had all the parts & knowledge to fix the problem and checked that everything was in working order after fixing it. Thank you again, David!!!

This company may well be reputable the majority of the time. Based on the preponderance of good…read morereviews I have to assume that this is the case. BUT they were highly DISREPUTABLE towards us. I'd give zero stars if I could. Emergency Hot water leak. They came out on a Sunday and replaced the cold water valve. Everything was fine until they gave me a quote for replacement. It was more than double the national average. When I asked for a itemized breakdown they said they couldn't provide that because of their "Task based Pricing System". I called BS. They have the numbers, they just are not willing to share them. But, because I was under duress I agreed to the price. I slept fitfully that night. Next day, I did some research and reconsidered. I called them back giving them a chance to adjust the price but they would not...nor would they divulge unit cost or labor rate. I calmly explained that they OBVIOUSLY HAVE those numbers otherwise how could they arrive at the "task based" final number to charge? Wouldn't budge. I subsequently got a quote from a local "Mom and Pop" plumber that was less than HALF! Within 4 hours of the call I had a new unit installed the old one hauled away and I saved myself $1400. It would have been even more savings, had "Handy-in-my-pocket" not GOUGED me for the little bit of work they actually did on Sunday. $275 (emergency call, understandable and agreed to) $375 (cold water valve change, 30 min tops OUTRAGEAOUS) $75 (cancellation fee, Really? Charging me because I caught you trying to take advantage? Un flipping Real. TL/DR Task Based Pricing is utter BS. It benefits THEM not YOU. Reputable companies show you their work. If they are not willing to so, they are HIDING something. It is the polar OPPOSITE of transparency. An analogy: Say you went into a restaurant you had never tried before expecting them to hand you a menu. They don't have a menu, they have "meal based pricing". Its $100 to eat here. You reasonably say to the server, "that seems really high, how much is the appetizer, the entree and the dessert and what exactly am I getting?" The response, "I can't tell you that". It seems like way too much, but you are really hungry so you agree. Your meal is fine, but you estimate that it really should have cost $50 or less. Would you ever go back? I hope these shysters enjoy the (at least) $200 they overcharged me for the work. It will be the last $$ they ever see from my family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and anyone else who will listen to me. I've read their smug answers to other complaints....don't buy it. This is a simple equation..... They tried to take advantage of my family by charging us $3000 for a $1400 job. This was even after I opted into their Handy Happy Advantage Partner Plan. (I have already backed that cost out of the above number, the real bill was to be closer to $3500) . When I Called BS, they confirmed their proclivity for GOUGING by over charging for the small job they actually did AND hitting me with a cancelation fee for backing out of a terrible, terrible deal. Shame on them for making a bad situation worse...a lot worse.

Yorklyn Construction - General contractor York PA

Our Kitchen Project: (Just Completed)…read more My wife and I had been wanting to have our kitchen remodeled for several months. When it finally came time to do it, we started going through the process of trying to find the right contractor for the project. We spent several weeks researching until we came across Yorklyn Construction. Once we met Ben, we felt like the search was over. The advice, detailed thought he put into our plans brought a sense of comfort to us. The quotes were fair and where we hoped they would be. Starting with Ben, our experience fanned out to the rest of folks working for Yorklyn. Tom, who managed our project, was absolutely in touch with our thoughts as the project transitioned from demo to the "rebuild". He did a better job of "detail nitpicking" than I could have. From the beginning they stated it clearly, "we want it done right for you." They certainly lived up to that and exceeded it. The carpentry work with the cabinets they constructed all the way down to the floor thresholds / transitions were perfect, and I mean perfect. I'm sure a lot of contractors hold similar standards, but where Yorklyn pulls ahead is with how they treat your property, residence and your family. You become a bit more than a customer. If you are looking at having some work done, I hope you give these folks a look. I'm sure you will end up where my wife and I are. (Incredibly happy customers!)

To Whom This May Concern:…read more Typically, we are not people that post reviews. Oh, if we really don't like something we have been known to speak up directly to the company. We have to have very strong feelings to post in a public forum. After all, saying something about a person's lively hood should not be taken lightly. Often people are quick to criticize and slow to praise. We would like to change that. We have a house that was in need of updates and repairs. We also where in desperate need of storage. We invited several companies to come by and tell us what they thought and to give us a bid. Two companies that came by and told us the project was too big for them and no bid the project. Finally, it came down to two companies from the area, Yorklyn Construction being one. Yorklyn shot straight with us. They told us the truth, not what they thought we wanted to hear. The bids came in pretty close but Yorklyn impressed us with their candor and professionalism which gave us confidence that once they agreed to something they would meet their commitments. We were told that the process would be long (several months) and that we would basically be living in a construction site. Like I stated, they shot straight with us and it was a big project. Side note, they did everything they could to minimize any discomfort and were respectful that this was our home. We did have hiccup's but Yorklyn's staff and the sub-contractors where great. In a project this size there are hundreds of small decisions, but I can honestly say that everyone involved looked out for our best interests. If they thought we were making a wrong choice, they spoke up. For example, we chose the color of grout for the shower in a showroom. The tile guy put in the tile but thought we made a mistake with the color of the grout. He didn't just go and let us make a mistake. Instead he spoke up and brought it to our attention. He and the project manager discussed it with us and made suggestions that we elected to follow and are happier for that decision. We had a similar experience with their painter. Trust me things look different in a sample catalog or a showroom than in your house. I also wanted to say that their carpenters are great and their cabinet guy is amazing, very skilled and exact, a true craftsman. Our cabinets are just wonderful. We can also tell you that on the rare occasion that we did express displeasure, they made it right and when a problem was our fault, they were fair. Several of the Yorklyn staff and sub-contractors feel like friends. We have very warm feelings for these people. We have grown to trust them. Not only would we recommend them, we will call upon them in the future when we need skilled professional trades people. Often in business "quality "is defined as meeting or exceeding a customer's expectations, in our book, Yorklyn's work and the people that make up this company are the definition of quality. Sincerely, Sandy and Garry Stewartstown, PA
