I've read these past reviews and scratch my head. This team was hands down the most professional and efficient in their install. I have an older home and they took extreme care in the installation of my beautiful Mendota fireplace insert. I'm so very pleased and will recommend them time and again. We had a new construction home built this past year and we selected a wood burning fireplace from Fireplaces Plus for our living room. After they installed it, I was checking out the install. There is a fresh air intake pipe coming out the side and up through the ceiling into the attic. I touched it, and it fell out to the floor. I thought it was odd that it wasn't attached to an outside intake vent, so I grabbed the installation manual. The manual very clearly states that the fresh air intake is to be installed OUTSIDE the envelope of the house with an intake vent in the soffit or outside wall so it is pulling fresh air in, NOT air from the attic or walls. Also it calls out that the ducting has to be insulated ducting, which this was not. I called the manufacturer and they agreed that yes those points need to be followed, especially in newer construction that is built much "tighter" than older homes. The un-insulated pipe will sweat on cold days, making the subfloor wet, and causing rot over many years. When I called Fireplaces Plus and pointed out the mistakes, I was actually yelled at over the phone. I was told something along the lines of, We've been doing it this way for 45 years, don't you think we know what the hell we're doing??? I pointed out that new construction is built quite differently and I didn't want issues 15 years down the road. He said fine, they'd come out and put insulated ducting in for a $400 upcharge. I hung up, went to Menards, and got 40 ft of insulated ducting and changed it out myself in a half hour, along with running the other end to fresh air. The cost of the ducting was less than $50. Sales is great, and friendly. They went the extra mile to get me a stainless face. Service persons are friendly, but actual service work needs work and improvement. During the install the installer did not install according local codes, disagreed with the Bettendorf build codes and did not install accordingly. Came back 2nd time, and refused to fix according to build codes, then argued with the inspector. Third time they came back after I had to call them to insist they fix it to pass code so I could finish building. Soon after, the pipe that was going through the concrete wall was separating and noticed there was no insulation where they said insulation was suppose to be installed. Talked to the main office and they said they must have forgotten. However, the installers told me directly it was insulated. They supposedly fixed it, but only put extra silicone around the exhaust and was not properly installed, the exhaust was not flush to the outside. They then came back again and properly fixed it. . read more

I should have read these reviews before hiring them. We ordered a new front for our fireplace and was told we would be called in 4 weeks to schedule the installation. Seven weeks later I called THEM and we set up a time. The guy (who did the original estimate and knew what the fireplace looked like and what we ordered) who came to do the work did not bring the correct materials. Fast forward, it has been over a week and no one has ever called to say when they will finish this job. Meanwhile I have the new fireplace front leaning against the wall. I had to put up a blanket to cover this gaping hole and it is getting colder. Tried calling several times today and no one is answering. read more

We have a natural gas fireplace that was install by Fireplaces Plus in our newly constructed home many many years ago and it finally would not ignite by the switch on the wall at the end of the 2019 season. To start the 2020 fall season off I called Fireplaces Plus to come out and check the system as it still was an issue. The tech / owner came to the house as scheduled only to find he did not have the tools in his truck to do the inspection. (thought that would be part of his check list before leaving the shop). So he rescheduled and came back to replace a burner and clean the unit overall. Upon doing the repair he broke one of the major ceramic logs in the fireplace and said he would have to order me another one. Unfortunately i never heard back from anyone on a follow up. I called, sent emails and even stopped by the store to watch them write up a work order to look into it. As it turns out the model I have is OBS of which most parts are not available. I even went on line to possibly locate an extra ceramic log with no success. However the fireplace is usable and the broken log is not that visible nor did i receive any billing for the job un-done. Now he inside glass is covered with black suit from improper gas / air mixture with the new burner after a few weeks of use. Never had that extreme problem before - guess I'll need to call on someone else to adjust the mix. From a customer service stand point it would have been nice to receive a follow up call or explanation as to what they could do to make it right or replace all the ceramic logs in the fireplace with a similar new set. As you can see the reviews overall are low due to poor customer service and no follow up. Good luck. read more

Very poor service after the sale! Called in December to get some brick cut for the fireplace insert that was purchased and installed by Fireplaces Plus. The salesman instructed us on how to measure the brick. Was told on the phone by that salesman that it would be a week. We drove from Iowa City the following Saturday to find a sign on the door that said closed, taking inventory. Someone saw us at the door and came over. We were told that if we didn't get a call that they were not ready. No indication of when they would be ready or apology. We have called twice since then and both times were told that they would call us back. This is February 27, 2018!! We are still waiting on the call! Would not recommend Fireplaces Plus. Very disappointed. read more

Very, very poor service and they don't stand behind their products. Purchased a free standing gas stove five years ago. It stopped working the first year. Called and they came and "fixed" it. Repeat this for three years. This year, again, it doesn't work. Called and was told someone would call back. That was a month ago. Called again and was "disconnected". No one will return my call and whoever answers the phone can't help. Save your money and go to a different provider. read more

I would not recommend purchasing your new fireplace from Fireplaces Plus. The level of service is very poor, after install care is non existent, the company has zero interest in resolving installation problems, miss appointments, don't follow up and worse of all even admitted in our case that the install was probably done incorrectly. We've tried calling, writing twice and even going in in person to try and resolve, but to no avail. Once you've paid - the owners and staff have no interest in resolving your issue or developing repeat customers. Jon read more

Took 5-6 trips out here, finally by the owner, to get fireplace installed properly. That wasted 6 weeks. Then, when our glass got broken, we went to get more. I asked if they could get a replacement piece of glass. They called and suggested I might want to sit down or "at least lean against something as we have news and we don't think you're going to like it. It's $279 so you might go to a glass place due to cost and it might be 12 days for us to get it here. Then, they said, "or we could just take the glass off of one on the floor and replace it here." After thinking this over, I think I'll take her first piece of advice. I'm done dealing with this incompetence and rude tone. read more
