There's just something magical about being on a road trip and eating gas station food - at least…read morethat's the case for me. It's happened time and time again - the most recent being just last month, when on the road finishing out visiting all 50 US States. ND was my 50th. Anyway, while in Bismarck, stopped off at Landers and had a great experience. It was a simple lunch - An Italian sub and a cup of soup. Tossed in chips and a salad too. Getting ahead of myself. It's in the building of a gas station. One side is the convenience store the other is Landers. Counter where your food is made to order and seating. It's not table service - walk up to the counter, order and find a seat. Your food will be brought to you. When you're done, head to register to pay the bill. It's not easy to capture how tasty my meal was with words. But as I've said a countless number of times, if our tastes align, you'll love this place. Everything from the bun, to the soup and chips. I devoured it all leaving the salad for my friend. I especially enjoyed how the sub's ingredients were evenly loaded. Had a taste of it all in every bite. Unlike other experiences where it's all lettuce or the sauce is overpowering. The chips weren't too greasy or salty and the soup was just tied everything together. Obviously I'm not a regular but I know if I lived in the area, I would be and then some. Definitely the duke. If you're in the area, it's definitely a must.

Also the hours are 10am-3pm, which are much shorter than the gas station hours (I only know because I came back the next day lol). The deli has everything made to order so it's as fresh as it gets! I ordered a half sammy and soup combo ($13.99) w/ fountain drink, as well as a salad entree because I couldn't decide what to order. They brought the food to me at the table and quickly realized that it was way too much food. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed it all. The sandwich bread had a nice chew to it and the ratio of all the ingredients were well balanced. As for the soup it was flavorful, not too salty, and just made me feel all warm inside. I really liked the micro greens in the salad as well as the slices of fresh avocado. While it's located inside a gas station, it really acts like an independent deli shop that has a good steady flow of customers. I wish we had a shop like this back home because I would definitely be a regular!

According to the restaurant, they have been open for 50 years. I googled the best lunch at in Bismarck and this restaurant topped the list. When we got there, the Line was out the door, but people were saying it's worth it. Country House deli has lots of sandwiches to choose from. We asked some people in line what their favorite sandwich was. I went with the grinder on sourdough and I was not disappointed. This sandwich was delicious the deli meats, the sauces, the bread, all super fresh . It looks like they rotate their soups and if the wild rice soup would've been available I totally would've ordered that because that is not something I can get anywhere outside of North Dakota. The staff are friendly, and the line moves pretty quick. The food comes out relatively fast. I loved my sandwich from here and I wish it was closer because I would probably get sandwiches all the time. We were the table that was cracking up in the back and stayed there until you closed. Thanks for making this a really fun memory for us.

Like other yelpers, I found the bread very tasty and fresh. The soup was also very good, it was not roux laden as many soups of this style can be. It was light and flavorful. I just wish I had a hunk of that bread to dunk in it. Oh and most importantly, it's Veteran owned!

They have everything from simple Bavarian cream to guava and mango flavor! It's hard to choose but my favorite is the mango donut, a simple glazed donuts full of fresh mango filling, it's heaven! We met one of the employees of the bakery and he told us how they make sure to have quality ingredients and make sure nothing is old and stale. They also make Cuban and Puerto Rican sandwiches if you want something savory, he said to call him ahead of time so that we can have something fresh right when we eat. So thankful to have a diverse local business!

From the moment we wandered in, the owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. Not only did he explain what every dessert in the case was and how it was made, he let us try their fresh baked breads and described their sandwiches and the grocery area of the store as well! It was a personal tour and we were so grateful! One of my friends has family in Mexico/travels there frequently and was delighted to find some of her favorite soda as well as desserts (albeit with different names) here. And she left well stocked! Of course I had to ask if they had a vegetarian sandwich (as he was describing how they make their sandwich meat) and he paused a beat and then exclaimed, "That's not latin!" Oh it was so funny, we all had a great laugh! He went on to say he'd be happy to put some veggies on a sandwich for me if I wanted. We did ask how he came to North Dakota and he explained it was because of the hurricane in Puerto Rico awhile back. We told him how happy we were he chose Bismarck of all places. It can't be easy! We all left loaded down with bakery boxes and items from the grocery portion of the store. And were all delighted at how amazing their prices were! Seriously - this place has great prices. I got tres leches, a giant slab of the most amazing vanilla cake, a cup of what tasted like horchata that was a cross between pudding/jello in texture, and a cork screw shaped pastry filled with bavarian cream that I've seen reviewers call a cannoli but he was specific in the fact that it was absolutely not a cannoli. (I believe he called it a quesito but I could be wrong.) The owner also stressed that the desserts in the case change in variety daily so what may be there one day won't be there the next. All in all - this business is fantastic in every way (right down to the fact that the room was absolutely spotless and sparkling clean) and we will be back next time we are in Bismarck! Please turn out and support this wonderful new business!

While making the food there were flies everywhere, some landed multiple times on the sandwich. When I tried to pay with a gift card I had she didn't know how to use the online gift card, and barely how to use the coupon. While putting together the sandwich random amounts of toppings were added, like 8 pieces of cheese on one sandwich and then 4 on the other, it was very bizarre. Scooping out tuna onto the bread seemed like it was an extremely difficult and time consuming task for her. I was asked 3 times something I didn't understand because of the accent maybe and eventually it was about what sauce I wanted, which I had already mentioned a few times, but maybe she had a hard time hearing as well. It still didn't make me feel comfortable as I could tell she was getting upset. By the time it was time to pay I didn't want to make a scene so just paid with cash instead of my online gift card because it was getting ridiculous and taking forever. The people waiting in line behind me just gave up and left. I gave her a tip to hopefully make her day better for someone else but I have to give this 0 stars if I could as I will not be coming back and just threw out the sandwiches, wasting food time and money. Will NOT be coming back.

Their menu was a bit more focused than many sub shops but I took it to mean they know each of those subs inside and out, although none were really speaking to me, until I saw The Grinder. I was instantly transported to Grand Forks and even Fargo during my college days so many years ago, and I knew I was set for lunch. The sandwich ingredients seemed odd - taco meat, ham, turkey, salami, red sauce, white sauce, lettuce, tomato, so I assumed you picked your deli meat and sauce and then they were added to the taco meat and rabbit food. When I got to the counter to order, I found out this wasn't correct, as they put EVERYTHING into this sammy. As an aside, I never did get a complete explanation of the red and white sauces but I believe they are based on sriracha and ranch, which are already sauces, so whatever... I decided I didn't want all of that so went with the turkey and taco grinder but wanted some onions added instead of the tomato, which was no problem. Let us leave this for a moment as the grinder is prepared and talk about two other "issues" that feed my two-star rating. First, my order was for the sandwich and a Coke. The counter guy asked if I wanted the combo but I declined as I don't want chips. "Oh no," he exclaimed, "we have fries AND you save 20%!" He proudly exclaimed. Just let me state for the record, if one originally does not order a combo meal and then changes their mind and does order it, they have not saved 20%. Rest assured I understood that in the moment and politely pointed that out to him. I also know it wouldn't have been a thing to mention if it weren't for this second thing - their payment process. The guy rings everything up and I inserted my card into the reader and then he spun the little tablet-screen thing around for me to complete my order. We all have been there before; kind of a busy place, wanting to eat, talking to coworker, etc. so you just hit the highlighted oblong button at the bottom of the screen. I did the same, only registering a millisecond too late that it defaulted to a 20% tip. Thing three, they don't bring food to your table AND they apologized for it taking so long, so I paid a 20% tip for counter help. Now back to my sandwich. Remember when I said I only wanted turkey and taco meat? Well, apparently that didn't equate to adding more of one (or both) to make up for the lack of ham and salami, so I paid for stuff I didn't get. AND a 20% savings on a combo meal I didn't really want AND 20% tip for counter service that they even acknowledged wasn't very good. I posted a picture of my empty sub, in case anyone is interested.
