We hired Firehouse Coatings to grind and seal 6000 sf of new construction concrete in a shop building (including 1200 sf of living quarters) and to do a full poly aspartic coating on 1,400 sf of new concrete on a wraparound porch at the front of the building. Professionalism was lacking and scheduling is a real problem. It took 5 months to complete the work and then they expected we should wait another 4-5 weeks because their schedule was full. Work was done in a shoddy manner and they wouldn't stand behind their warranty or even correct the application errors. They dumped trash from other jobs in our roll-off dumpster until it was overflowing. We accepted their bid at the end of Sept. 2025 and scheduled the work for the week of November 3 (earliest available). We blocked out all other trades for that week so that the floors could be finished without traffic. Eric and his crew worked that week to seal the concrete inside but they were unable to do the outside work due to "weather conditions". They did grind and patch the outside but couldn't apply the coatings because we had heavy dew nightly and the water was coming off the roof onto the concrete so the moisture was a problem, plus we had some days which were windy. They rescheduled to come back on Nov 18 (I received notice the night before) to complete the porch but they texted at 7 am and asked me to confirm that the concrete was dry. It was not dry and I suggested they advise me with a little more lead time for the next scheduling and I could put something under the downspouts to capture the water or we could bring in large heaters to dry the concrete. We didn't hear from them again until I made contact at the end of December and they said they were hoping to complete it in January. Didn't hear anything and we were getting ready to open the shop in March so we started contacting them in early Feb to get on the schedule. Finally got a text that they could do the work at the end of March. I let them know this was unacceptable as we were opening and had been waiting for 5 months and would not wait for another month. They scheduled us for Feb 23. I pointed out some problems with the interior sealed floor in the living area where the coating had dried in multiple spots looking like it was flaking or like there was a snake skin texture underneath. Eric said it was an application error and he would grind it and reapply the seal. The area now looks worse than it did before and there are boot prints dried in it, and is so rough I can't run a mop over it. At the end of day one, they had applied the bottom coat to the outside along with the chips. They put up caution tape around the work area when they left. We had expected them to complete that day but they said they had to re-prep the surface as it had been so long since they did that work. The next day, we had our plumbing crew scheduled but they would be working outside and the plumbers were working inside with numerous entry points away from the concrete work. Firehouse left that afternoon with the porch flooring top coat having just been applied and wet but they didn't put up caution tape even though there was other activity at the site. They stopped by my house for payment when they left and when I had a chance to inspect it the next morning, found that someone had walked across the porch when it was wet and tracked the coating into the living quarters. Eric said he wasn't responsible for the damages because they didn't do it and he had not put up the caution tape because it was windy and the wind could blow it into the coating. He said the plumbers knew they had been coating that floor and should know not to walk on it. You know what would have kept them from walking on it, caution tape like on day 1.
The work took far longer than it should have. We had an unseasonably warm winter and if they had been trying to schedule our work, it would have been done much sooner. They will not accept responsibility for any errors and in fact, after acknowledging that the interior was an application error, Eric now says that it was because my concrete was in such bad shape that the product must have pooled causing it to dry improperly - and that I agreed to that as the final resolution when he couldn't fix it. My subsequent research shows that the seal coating should be sprayed and then rolled to ensure even drying. Further my research shows that when the second coat is applied without the first coat being dry, it will dry with a scaley snake skin look and the correction for this involves applying something to dissolve the coating and allow to redry - not grinding it and spraying again.
