The Painted Rooster - Croque Madame

The Painted Rooster is great place for breakfast in Edinburgh. We ate there several times when we…read morestayed at A Room in the City West nearby in early October. We enjoyed the poached eggs on haggis, the Salmon Benedict and the Eggs and Avocado. We tried several coffees and the cappuccino was on favorite. The service was very friendly and personable. The customers were a mix of locals and tourists. On most of the days we ate there the only dining room open was down a full flight of stairs. There was another dining room up a short flight of stairs from the entry as well as several outside tables.

How can you not like a saucy egg sandwich for breakfast?…read more Me and my homie went here on a whim recently. The girls of our group ditched us to do some shopping and had wanted to get up super early to look at nature and walk around the city. Man it was so nice sleeping in. But obviously gotta get some grub at some point. That's when I saw The Painted Rooster was literally up the street from our Bnb. Very cute place. Service was cool just like the decor but definitely had to highlight Croque Madame. I had never had it before but loved every bit of it. It reminds me a giant Eggs Benedict but the egg isn't necessarily poached. I love Eggs Benny so it was easy for me to devour this dish. Putting an egg on top of swiss cheese with a Bechamel sauce just sounds right. Since there's Swiss, of course you gotta have ham with it because Cubano's are a thing...Wait that's it!! It's like if you combine a Cubano with an Eggs Benedict. That's Croque Madame! If you like either of those, you'll have to give this one a try!

The staff was relatively nice but the cafe was very busy. It was hard to find somewhere to sit. The food options looked great but I only got to try one pastry.

We clearly didn't plan things out well, as we had to scramble to hit stops 6 and 7 within an hour of closing, on our last full day in Edinburgh. But, in our defense, coffee shops close up super early in Edinburgh! We hustled our way from the Mile towards Cairngorm, side-stepping tourists and hurrying across intersections. On a normal day, it would've been a nice jaunt through town, but on this day, it was a hectic seemingly-longer-than-it-should-have-been-half-sprint to the front door. I did love the feel of this shop, from the steps leading down to the cozy interior and the bags of spent coffee bean lining the ceiling. The girl working that day was very nice and welcoming. We placed our order and settled into a small table near the back of the building. I kept an eye on the barista (hubby's back was to the counter) so that I could pop up to grab our drinks when they were ready, but she brought them to us, instead. She saw our Disloyal 7 cards out on the table, and said, "Be sure to bring that by before you leave so that I can stamp them!" The lattes were good, with a nice, rich and creamy flavor. I think I could've ended our night here, wrapped up in the warmth of a good latte and a comfortable chair, but my husband pointed out that we had time to get to the final stop on our list, if we hurried. So, we went up to the counter and had the barista stamp their slice, and then hurried once more into the cold Edinburgh dusk.

Finding a decent outlet for sandwiches and other items of a take away nature that suits your lunch…read moretime requirements can be a tricky investigative process. If you're going to give somewhere your lunch time custom on a daily basis, then the place has got to be a cut above, because there's nothing more disappointing than having had a stressful morning and looking forward to your lunch, then being sorely underwhelmed by your first ravenous chomp into a panini lacking in flavour or with not quite enough salad leaves. With Herbie, thankfully, you can buy your favourite lunchtime creation, safe in the knowledge it'll definitely rank highly on the tastiness scale. There is an ace choice of daily soups on offer, more than usual for a sandwich shop I would say, plus there's a super range of panini combinations, and other breads and fillings to select from.

Although it has been a while since my last visit, I need to review this fantastic place!…read more They have a large variety of organic and local produce available - the breads are delicious and wholesome. There a 'filling counter' where you can pick & choose what to have on your sandwich, baguette or roll. When available I tend to go for the Brown multi-seeded granary with medium cooked roast beef, black pepper, some English mustard and red onion. Yumm! Their soups are daily made and are packed with flavours. This is the West End so expect to pay a premium for your food. (not fair but that is the way it is) - Herbie at least something to give back on your hard earned cash! (oh, and they have a loyalty card too) I say for a slightly more luxurious lunch you can visit them, you won't be disappointed.
