We approached Ryan to make a walnut trestle table for our dining room, and it is freaking gorgeous. He was professional, collaborative with regards to design, and was able to stick to a reasonable schedule despite the madness of a global pandemic. I can't wait to watch our daughter slowly destroy it over the next 20 years. All hail the Prince of Planing! The sultan of Sanding! The Justiciar or Joinery!

Not only did the build out take forever (7 months), but since picking up my van on my first/second use, I have had roof leaks because they didn't install the "C" gaskets right for the AC unit, I experienced multiple leaks in the pressurized plumbing system (see pictures below) which caused wood damage to the cabinetry due to poor PEX seals, I still have no relief from the misbehaving (and Rydawell recommended) Ecoflow electrical system, I discovered they failed to insulate the sliding door, they actually plumbed the gray water lines into the BOTTOM of the gray water tank using the same penetration point as the drain (this caused water to back up into the shower pan when using the sinks (not to mention it would fail completely in freezing weather) and I discovered that the Rixen heating system was installed against manufacturer recommendations (to name just some of the issues). This has caused me thousands of dollars to get repaired (so far) at another (competent) van builder. While his hourly rate may seem cheaper, it takes him much longer to accomplish work items. As an example, his quote to install a 2nd battery (which he was supposed to have left room for) was twice as long as I was able to get it done elsewhere by professional van builders.

We have used Phinney Ridge Painting twice now for large projects- first a full house painting…read moreproject in a 100 year old house- top to bottom ceilings, walls, trim and stairs in early 2024, and second project a massive repaint and hole patching project after an exceptionally large electrical rewiring project in late 2025. At least 20+ holes were patched and are now absolutely invisible in our color-drenched home. Overall, communication is excellent- everyone on the team gets cc'ed on emails, project managers visit the site regularly, and the onsite leads are extremely professional and detail-oriented. Arnoldo was our first project painting lead, his skill is unparalleled- watching him paint or come up with a painting solution for a tricky area is astounding. Adrian M was our most recent painting lead, and he is focused, efficient and clearly works very hard (the guy runs fast but is very professional in everything he does) and has a level of skill that is unmatched. Everyone is polite, respectful of our home and friendly. Phinney Ridge is tidy and clean, they take feedback well when things aren't quite perfect, and they are timely and efficient, and they solve problems. The cost and quality are commensurate, their experience is well evidenced and they always have solutions for tricky old house problems, plus a great warranty. I would happily hire again, and we plan to when the time comes to paint the exterior of our house in another year or two.

So far so good with Phinney Ridge Painting, I will circle back once the job is completed. Thus far…read morethey have been very easy to work with, have been upfront with information and not pushy. We are looking forward to see the quality of the work when they paint the house in July.

The new tile in the bathroom is exceptionally well done and now I won't even have grout in the future! The shower and tile for the floor was also done and looks exceptional. We added a little from the original job, like putting in the french doors. Jose is highly skilled and knowledgeable, helping us make decisions when we were having trouble. Attention to detail is a key component to what he does. Jose is a man of his word and easy to communicate with. If he says he will do it, it will get done. His crew is kind and respectful and I would like to thank them also. We are grateful to have met Jose. He was recommended by a neighbor. He took very good care of us. We will call him again most definitely. I have added some before and after photos, I hope it does some justice because it's a job well done and we are very pleased. Thank you Jose!

Ballard

When I moved into our 1938 Ballard home a few years back, the inspector, after giving a full…read morereasonable report of the house said, "Oh and the garage, well... I think you know". Indeed the detached garage was more of a shanty spider nest with a gravity defying lean that was barely safe enough for my lawn mower. "Someday", I said. "Someday we will rebuild..." Over the years I consulted with a few contractors including a few of the larger firms with strict lower limits on the size of projects they are interested in. Never felt right. I've never been involved in a construction project, I have no idea what I'm in for and I knew it. This was just too much. Meeting with Barry gave me new hope. He was full of creativity. Lots of options with varying budget options. He even had ideas on how to save the original structure. I nodded along politely and then said, "Let's tear it all down." Nine months later I'm writing this review in my new garage/office. Gentle natural light is filtering down from the skylights in my vaulted ceiling onto gorgeous polished concrete floors. My A/C has clicked on to celebrate the rare 80+ degree day. Later this evening I might open the tri-fold patio doors and enjoy the cool breeze reflecting on the journey that was both harder than I imagined and yet more successful than I hoped. Barry was a great partner in all this. He runs a very tight ship and has an excellent crew. He works really closely with our designer Joanne to get our plans and permits together. The demolition crew put on a hell of a show and even let my wife run the excavator. They were super flexible and didn't flinch when they needed to pull up some giant tree roots and fill in sinkholes. The framers put the structure up so fast I just blinked and it was done. Jesus the drywall guy is a straight wizard. Patrick the carpenter has an eye for detail, always ready to discuss which of us has the better obscure sci-fi reference t-shirt, and built the most beautiful fence I've ever seen. Barry is himself a great communicator and problem solver. I also found it very reassuring that he lives only a 1/4 mile away where he (and sometimes his young sons, and once even his mom) could be onsite in minutes. We had plenty of challenges where any thoughts I may have had over "Well... what do I really need a contractor for?" were easily banished. A million decisions, inconsistent inspectors, cranky neighbors, a global-fucking pandemic, we made it through. I'm probably completely spoiled now and I wouldn't have any other way.
