Negatives, short version: The short version is that within one week of purchase a problem presented itself that required ~$1400 to fix. It seems highly likely that they knew about it. Thus my strong advice is DO NOT BUY FROM THEM. Three separate auto repair shops (the one who did the repairs in Charlottesville, the shop that did the pre-sale inspection in Harrisonburg, and a third shop in Charlottesville that I called just to get a totally independent voice) all say that VA Auto Sales either knew or should have known about the problem. All three expressed serious skepticism about the claim by VA Auto Sales not to have known anything about it. Negatives, long version: eight days after purchase the check engine light came on. My mechanic said it was a code for a catalytic converter failure, but that the sensors were sometimes oversensitive and these codes come on for no reason. So he reset it. Seven days later it came back on. Turns out two of the four catalytic converters had indeed failed. My mechanic says that given the timing (coming on within a week), it seems highly likely that the dealer knew about the problem and had cleared the code. As I said, two other shops confirmed this to be the case. VA Auto Sales maintains that (a) they didn't know about the problem (b) they didn't clear the code and (c) it doesn't matter anyway because that's not covered under warranty. That last point is obviously true--I'm screwed with no legal recourse. But points (a) and (b) seem really doubtful given what the three shops have told me. VA Auto Sales claims that if they had cleared the codes (1) a pre-sale inspection would have revealed "pending codes" and (2) the light would have come on much sooner than it did (eight days after). All three shops say that claim #1 is simply 100% not true--if someone clears the code there won't be any "pending code." All three shops also suggest that #2 is not likely either, and so does my experience--my mechanic cleared the code, but then it didn't come on again for SEVEN DAYS afterwards. So it's perfectly plausible/likely that VA Auto Sales could have cleared the code before purchase, and it only came on 8 days later. TO SUM UP: Based on my own experience and the input of three separate auto shops, I find it likely that VA Auto Sales sold me a van that they knew had a major $1400 problem. They are right, though, that I have no legal recourse to compel them to pay. So all I can say is DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.

Even the size of my tires has been an issue because of their unique size. 3 times in a row Mid Atlantic has been the only place that was able to help me. They've even investigated weird noises which other mechanics were too afraid to look for- Mid Atlantic found it in half an hour and pulled the pebble out that was causing a racket. If you have a European vehicle in the area or a unique car you can certainly trust them with it. Beyond that their staff is by far much nicer than any BMW dealership I've ever been to. Well, they waited three weeks to submit the paperwork, and request a copy of the insurance card. I immediately sent the card and told them I had less than a week on my temp tags. I was promised a new set of temp tags would be sent to me. Well, guess what, the tags were never sent. I contacted Jenny Kichinko and was told the tags had not been sent. She said a new set would be mailed that day and also promised a copy would be emailed to me. Well, once again, they failed to come through with the email. I could not drive my car for 4 days due to their procrastination, lack of attention to detail and outright disregard for keeping a "promise." I have NEVER had such poor service from any dealership. All I got was excuses. If they would have given me the paperwork, I could have walked into the DMV and had my tags that same day. They need a complete overhaul of their office staff.

The oil change was significantly less expensive than what I typically pay in Northern Virginia, and it even included a tire rotation. I arrived at 8:30 and was completely finished by 9:30. Few days later son was called and told it was done. He brought car home again and said it was doing same thing. My husband and I went back in and spoke to eric and insisted he test drive it with my husband. Eric admitted that something was wrong with car and lifted hood and discovered oil had not been changed like we were told and we even had to put oil in the car when he first brought it home because it was empty. We were again promised it would be fixed. Well lo and behold the same old crap again. This went on for few weeks and to make a long story short they appear to be nothing but crooks who lie constantly like they think everyone is stupid and gullible but them. How anyone could think this is a good place to buy a car is beyond me. I even did research on this vehicle and found hundreds of complaints about the same issue we were trying not only to get them to admit was there, which after getting eric to test drive he finally did, but to fix the problem.
