It was two months ago today and not only was it the best haircut I've ever gotten, but it has continued to look great. No awkward grow out phase. I am an independent journalist and political commentator as a part time job; it feels great to look my best every day on camera. It has also boosted my confidence in real-life interactions. For example I am meeting someone tomorrow for a post graduate program I'm in and I know my appearance won't hold me back from making a good impression. Update: shop owner contacted me and asked me to remove my review for a refund, he said he would refund me - refund didn't make it to my credit card, so I didn't remove this review, he then charged my card a second time so currently my AMEX has two charges for a total of $250 from this shop. I'm reporting this as fraud. Clients beware. Original Review: I paid about $160 all-in for a men's haircut here, which is nearly double what I've paid at other high-end places in LA. I went in with high expectations because his Instagram features really advanced, textured work. What I got didn't resemble that at all. First, the setting. This is a small unit inside Salon Republic in Hollywood, roughly the size of a closet, with two hand-drawn canvases on the wall and not much else. At this price point I expected something closer to a luxury salon experience. It's one of the more sparsely decorated units in the building. That alone wouldn't matter if the cut delivered, but it sets the tone. The cut is where it fell apart. I gave him one specific request: take it shorter, and texturize the front so it doesn't grow out puffy and dense. I showed him a reference photo from his own Instagram. At the end he told me - unprompted - that he'd worked through all of my hair except the front, which he hadn't touched at all. The front was the entire reason I was there. I trusted the process and left. Before that, he washed my hair and pushed the shampoo he sells in the shop. At the end he pushed the styling product he'd used, which weighed my hair down so heavily it looked like a wet helmet. When I said I'd probably look for it on Amazon, he steered me back to buying it there. Being upsold twice on a $160 haircut is not what I expected. I got home, washed the product out, and confirmed that the longest part of my hair - the front - was untouched. The result looks nothing like the reference photo I brought in from his own page. I messaged him on Instagram asking if I could come in and have a little taken off the front. He said yes, but attached a long paragraph explaining that I should have raised it in the chair and that this wasn't convenient for him. After spending $160, that wasn't the customer service I expected. I decided not to go back and paid someone else to fix it instead. He's a friendly guy and I'm sure others have had better luck. But this was the most expensive haircut I've ever paid for and the most disappointing experience I've had at every stage of it. I won't be back. read more
