Trying a Delano favorite today. After having Pan de CoCo on vacation I needed to find the nearest Filipino bakery to buy some. Turns out its about 35 min away from me, um ok worth the drive. After reading the reviews I read they sell out pretty quickly and I realized how right they were. When I arrived there was just a few options left and not knowing what to get I watched a customer come in and make an order, to which I of course responded with I want what she ordered. You cant go wrong when you watch what is everyone's favorite. I got lady fingers, sweet cream rolls and banana filled what I believe to be a lumpia wrapper. 6 lady fingers, 2 rolls and 2 banana yummys for $7. A steal! They only take cash so be prepared for that. The lady fingers are bread with sugar coating(not at all like the Italian lady fingers that are more cookie like). They were still warm ftom being fresh made and 3 for $1 how can you pass this up. Soft, sweet bread and a hot cup.of coffee. I would be in heaven. The sweet cream rolls were soft, and pillows. When I got home I put some of my Amish made Cinnamon Pear Jam that I wrote about in a previous review and it leveled up and it felt illegal eating it. The banana lumpia dessert was good, of the choices it wasnt my favorite but im not the biggest fan of fried food. It was crispy, and the sliced bananas inside was cooked nicely and not mushy. The banana flavor was subtle but there. I would have rather had a stronger banana flavor but to me the fry oil was overpowering. The bakery has been there for ao long, do not expect an over priced fancy bakery with mid products. Youre going to an older bakery(been around since the 80s and the building probably hasnt changed much) where they know how to bake the tried and true Filipino desserts and breads without gimmicks or trends, and because they keep interior/exterior basic they can keep the prices down. This is the kind of bakery you come to for quality old school products and service, everyone is helpful and kind and they deliver the most delicious breads and desserts. Hidden gem sorta hole in the wall. Forgot how we found this place but it was a little far from us. About 75 miles but well worth it if we're in the Bakersfield area. Ladies were in the kitchen making fresh pastries and rolls. Tried several of them with free samples that were awesome. I think we bought every type there on the display. A few tables in there if you want to sit and eat but mostly a smash and grab type of place. Take home or eat in the car like we did. I think we enjoyed the pastry so much we finished most of them before we even got home If you're looking for unique items not found in a regular pastry or donut shop, this is the place. The bread is delicious and so good with the bits of cream cheese. Everytime I stop by I order several bags since I can eat a good 5-10 in one sitting. Food, always freshly made. I believe they're still a cash only business. Definitely worth the drive to Delano. You have to try everything at least once there but know they open early and close early. Don't show up with a gluten allergy because this place is chock full of gluten. I think I've had almost everything but if you show up with an open mind and ask the people working there what to try they might hook you up with a whole tray filled with options and samples. Family owned joint has been on multiple television shows and is a must try if you are willing to make the trip to Delano. I have always heard my workmates say all good things about this place. Unfortunately, I live 30 minutes away so I really haven't tried anything until the day that I worked in Delano. And I was not aware that they only accept cash until I entered their door. Upon going inside, you can smell freshly baked bread and all the smiling titas greeting me like I am back home in the Philippines. I remember hiding emergency cash in the car so I got it and when I went back inside, I told the tita by the counter that I'd take whatever my $20 cash could get me. So she started bagging an assortment of bread - pandesal, ensaymada, pan de coco, lady fingers, ube bread - all 4 paper bags full. Then, another tita drops off a whole bag of pandesal and says it's for free. Then, just before I leave, they add another whole bag of freshly baked pandesal for free! Everything we've tasted were baked fresh and reminds you of 6am mornings back in the Philippines. My usually picky daughter ate four lady fingers in one sitting. The word is out! I had tasted one of their lady fingers. Delicious. Went the following weekend but they were closed the whole weekend/next week due to electrical problems. Granted, it doesn't look like a bakery from the outside. BUT, once you walk inside....wow, the baked bread and pastry smell is heavenly. I wanted everything, but had to ask what they would recommend for a first timer. The lady fingers...I bought a huge box for $21 and I got some of their 'pan de coco' ( bread with bits of cooked coconut), and some 'pan de Sal' (salted bread)....delicious. Everything delicious. Warning - this place is cash only! This tiny shop looks like it's inside of an abandoned little gas station, so it would be really easy to miss if you didn't know it was here. A lot of people came in and out so it seemed like a popular stop off the freeway. I tried their ube cream cheese bread & their hot dog buns. The bread itself was so soft! I also got what I thought was senorita bread but turned out to be some kind of pineapple filled bread. The bread tasted great but I didn't finish it since I don't like pineapple..wish I knew that when I picked it out! Haven been here in years while and I still love this place. The owner is one of the nicest people you will ever encounter. While my daughter and I had to wait for the cream cheese filled bread to be made because they were out from the already made batches, the owner served us with a full tray of sweet breads and offered us coffee. Fil Bake Shop has been part of Delano for YEARS and I can clearly remember visiting the bakery every Sunday after church like clock work. After mass this is where you'd find my mom and dad taking us. Delano is known for the agriculture and I remember my dad getting up at 3am-4am to get to the grape fields on time and this would be the spot for all the field workers to grab their pan right before heading to work in the back roads of Delano/Earlimart/Richgrove. When Delano had a bowling alley (once upon a time), this is where you'd find the hungry kids scarfing bread after spending the evening on the arcades at the bowling alley. Delano wouldn't be Delano without this Bakery, of course Delano makes up a lot of other businesses, but this bakery reminds me of my childhood. Recently we have been seeing Fil Bake Shop post a new baked item on social media and we wanted to check it out. It's the new ube flan cupcake, I'm not gonna sugar coat it just because this place takes me back in time, but if I had to rate that cupcake in general I'm going to give it 2 stars.. sorry and honestly I'm in shock since the bakers have been baking long before I was probably even born. Other baked items on the menu in my opinion are definitely 5stars and Fil Bake Shop definitely will still be one of my favorite bakeries. Everything is super cheap and delicious, don't forget to grab your lady fingers, pandesal, your bread rolled in cinnamon and sugar, puto, ensamadas... etc..
