Fifty Licks was voted as one of the top-rated Yelp places for ice cream nationally, and so I knew I…read morehad to stop by while in Oregon! One of their locations in downtown Portland had a fire recently, and so they're currently utilizing their truck and parking it just around the corner in a shared foot truck lot in the meantime. Fifty Licks is often compared to Salt and Straw because of their unique and interesting flavors. Their most popular flavors are their MANGO STICKY RICE and OREGON STRAWBERRY (and yes- Oregon strawberries are unique and much sweeter than your average Driscoll strawberries found in the supermarket). They give samples and so I sampled the HONEY CORNBREAD and the MATCHA MOCHI which were both great (the latter which had great sticky mochi texture but could use stronger matcha flavor), but I fell in love with their MANGO STICKY RICE. MANGO STICKY RICE is a classic Thai dessert made from as you guessed, mango and sticky rice mixed with sweet coconut. Fifty Lick's rendition of this dessert is spot on and is full of coconut, pieces of rice (which I don't know how they keep them from hardening!), and a mango compote swirl. It was creamy (not to mention vegan and gluten free) and may have been one of the best ice cream scoops I've had in a long time. A single scoop is $6.90, which I believe is pretty similar to Salt and Straw. The woman working the truck was super friendly and happy. The truck shares communal outdoor bench seating with the other food trucks around it, but I had no problem getting a seat. As an ice cream fanatic, Fifty Licks definitely lives up to the hype and worth the stop. I look forward to visiting again in the future- hopefully when they're back to have a fully operating storefront in Portland! Overall: 5/5 for ice cream, 5/5 for service

If you like exotic flavors with that Hispanic flare, then this is the place. I was very happy to find out that my all-time favorite flavor Nuez (pecan) was one of those flavors. Very nutty and buttery as how I always expected this to be. A delightful treat to enjoy during these last hot days of summer but can still be enjoyable throughout the year. Eloté or corn is my 2nd best favorite along with Pistachio and Mint chip not too far behind. There are multiple friendly ladies behind the counter ready to help you and they have tons of other flavors. Just hard to pry myself off my current favorites. They also have other frozen treats as well as churros near the checkout counter. Parking is ample and it's easy to get in and out of the lot. You can even sit outside and enjoy your treat with a friend or family member. Overall I wished I had tried this much sooner but now that found a new place to enjoy a frozen treat, I will come more often.

I had previously been to the shop on Main Street in Hillsboro near Shute Park, but this place blew my mind. So I got the rum raisin ice cream in a waffle cone. It was really good. Honestly I would have been ok if it had a little more rum flavor, but it's a family establishment, I get it. So my wife and daughter both got the tropical fruit slush, spicy and non-spicy. Somehow they got flipped and my daughter got the spicy version. She wasn't pleased but she ate the popsicle that was dunked in it and she gave me the slush. My mouth was not expecting the flavor explosion that it was in for. The mixture of the fruity flavor and the not too spicy hit was amazing. I never had tried it before, but I was quite happy.

Hearth Swirls is located in the corner of Hearth the store, and is clean, organized, and bright. They have a fairly big menu with lots of ways that you can customize your ice cream (or milkshake). The staff was very friendly and patient as she explained to me how it worked and let me decide. I ended up getting the pina colada with cookie dough and Reese's and was underwhelmed. Although the toppings were good, they were minimal for the size of the ice cream. But! With that being said, the portion of the soft serve was huge. You're definitely getting what you're paying for. The only thing that I didn't like was that there was no 'pina colada' flavor at all in my ice cream. It just tasted like vanilla ice cream. Not the end of the world, but I just wish their flavors were stronger.
