In a place bursting with authenticity, reality and beauty of everyday life, Hotel Criol sits as a…read morecontrast to its surroundings. It isn't traditional and in most ways, quite nice looking. The photos online are accurate. The location is amazing. The design of wood planks, stone and plenty of greenery is well thought through. The service was actually quite good, with an efficient checkin and kind people. Here are the key reasons why I wouldn't be able to return to Hotel Criol. The bedding is extremely uncomfortable, from sheets to mattress to the pillows. The pillows are all synthetic and there is no substitute available. I called the property ahead of booking to confirm there would be feather or down pillows, it was confirmed there would be in English and in Spanish, but none to be found even after discussing with front desk. For a hotel that isn't a hole in the wall and one of the most expensive options in Queretaro, that's just unacceptable. Getting a good night's sleep is the foundation of any hotel experience and all other things start to get overshadowed by that. The other thing that I've found quite unpleasant is the terrible smell that was present every day in all common areas, from courtyards to the pool. Not sure if it's garbage, chemicals, repellents or something else, but it was a large detractor. The room is nicely designed, with a slick sink, an excellent shower and of average size. It is pretty annoying that there is no central air conditioning and the air conditioner is quite noisy at night, making a lot of cracking and dripping noises when it works. There were plenty of contrasts. A beautiful library, yet a filthy dirty pool. Although design and service were excellent, this is not a property I'd return to. Foundational issue is the lack of comfort, composed of underlying problems. It's a 3 star hotel as a whole in hotel stars.

Its a really nice place but you can hear everything around from your bed. Its kind of an open…read morebathroom, so no privacy (crystal doors no sound proof ja). The staff is really really nice all time.

This hotel is a mixed bag...highs, lows, and one that could go either way depending on your…read morepreferences. I'd say closer to 2.5 stars. Here we go: Highs 1. The staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to be kind. For example, we had parked our rental car about a block away, and as soon as the space out front of the hotel opened up, the owners came into the breakfast area and said they'd hold the spot for us. Keep in mind though I speak Spanish...I don't think they speak a lot of English. 2. The architecture is STUNNING...see photo of the courtyard. I could sit out there all day! 3. The rooms feature beautiful old furniture, as well as local handicrafts and tapestries. 4. You control the temperature in your room...you are given a remote control for it at check-in with your key. 5. They give you 2 bottles of water a day...good for gringoes who can't handle the water to brush their teeth with! Lows 1. The bathroom is super small. Toilet and shower right next to each other, and the shower faucet sprays water in a way that feels like little pin pricks. 2. Room smelled a bit musty on the first two floors. 3. Spotty wifi. 4. Free breakfast was meager and average tasting...pan dulce (sweet bread) with fruit, juice, and coffee or tea. You can pay for eggs and other breakfast staples. Could Go Either Way 1. Each room is made up of three narrow floors. Historic and charming for some, and for others a pain to schlep your stuff up narrow stairs to third floor where everything is. Summary Would I stay again? Probably not but gosh darn it the employees are so friendly and the architecture is beautiful! Insiders tip: Free parking means parallel parking on a narrow street.
