If you look at my profile history, you can see that I've never left a negative review. Never. I've always figured that consistently bad places would phase out without my input, but I've never been to a place as poorly run as the Field's Station currently is, so I guess I've decided to change my stance. It pains me to write a poor review for a place so close to home. Additionally, I can't speak to the lodging experience as I'm a local and have never stayed with them. This review is for the current owners. Past owners have been wonderful, helpful, and kind. The current owners unfortunately do not fit this mold, which is disappointing considering that they inherited the station from their family. The food is expensive and the staff is consistently very rude. The man who runs the store is abrasive, raises his voice, and acts like any question or inquiry is an insult to his manhood. The woman is kinder and doesn't yell, but still gave inaccurate information when asked about store hours and serving times. In truth, I can't think of a recent positive experience I've had here. Oh! Perhaps one: the milkshakes are still very very good if they'll deign to serve you one. Unfortunately, the combination of the prices, the outright rudeness, and the drive just don't make it worth the trip anymore. Even for someone who lives nearby. You're better off bringing your own ice cream or going to Burns. Even if those places don't have a milkshake that stacks up to these, you will probably have a pleasant-enough experience with the staff or owners. Maybe someday when ownership changes it'll be worth going to again, fingers crossed. read more

Population: YOU and whoever is working here. You can get most anything you need here. Roadside liquor stores are extremely uncommon in Oregon, but you can buy spirits here! You can also get a burger and a malt. Or some gas. A great oasis in the desert. Speaking of deserts, Oregon doesn't have any "true" deserts. What is commonly referred to as "The Oregon High Desert" is actually steppe and is far too wet to be classified as a desert. BUT. The driest part of Oregon, the Alvord Desert, is very close to this water-hole. Anyway: great and friendly staff and always great stories to be written in this part of the state. I loved this place, but was very disappointed with the food I ordered. It was $13 for a breakfast sandwich that was made of Kraft cheese singles, white bread, a really thick and greasy slice of ham, and one egg. I took a couple bites before discarding. However, the staff was very sweet and provided good service. Just not keen on the food! read more

This is one of the best kept secrets in the west. Absolute middle of some of the most beautiful scenery in North America, and absolute middle of nowhere! Car, ATV, and airplane friendly... Best milkshakes in the world. And a great place to base out of for exploring the high desert. read more

The Fields Station Cafe is the best place to eat in Fields, In fact, it is the ONLY place to eat, buy gas, groceries or stay overnight for many miles. They claim to have world famous Milk Shakes, and they do. They have had people from all over the world try them. They make great cheeseburgers too. So, if you ever venture south in SE Oregon, down past Malheur Wildlife Refuge and up to the wonderful campground in the Steens mountains, be sure to go to the east side of the Steens Mountains to the Alvord Desert and Fields. read more

An oasis! :-). We stayed a night in one of the rooms, and happy with it. (The 2nd room - which we didn't use - had broken blinds so not very public, but an easy fix for the owners). And had one of their renowned milkshakes each. That's a lot we figured out :-) and one between us as the 'milk' is mainly ice cream. But it sure was delicious. And used their refueling facilities, which was very welcome. Overall recommended given the value and a/c on a hot day :-). (Online booking is also very welcome). read more

Great "stagecoach" kind of place. Arrived around noon after a big AM dirt bike riding session. Gas available. Had one of their signature milk shakes, excellent, large and cold on a hot day. My buddy had a very tasty and large breakfast plate. Great place to take a break in a very remote part of America. read more

The deep fryer was kaput the day we were there which is probably a good thing. Good burgers and oreo/chocolate shakes. Also the BLT and chicken sandwich are good deals. Bring your own soap because there are no indoor bathrooms. There is a well outside. Head up the road into Alvord Lake for a hot spring experience or back to Steens mnt. so you can work of the calories. read more

August 10, 2020. We stopped for burgers before heading out to the Alvord Desert. Ordered "to go" and waited on the patio quite awhile with the local flies. Spent 23$ for 2 burgers and fries. The orders came on paper plates which made it difficult to eat on the go. The burgers were tasty and filling, but we could have done without the fries. When all was said and done, we would have done better bringing a picnic lunch. We did not go back for the shakes as we weren't interested in paying an arm and a leg for those, too. A little disappointed as we were going off the reviews. The Desert was the highlight of the day. read more

This place is a regular stop on the Rose City Grand Tour. Definitely "in the middle of nowhere"! Very pleasant and welcoming staff. They have gasoline (regular and diesel, no premium). Very small cafe. A two room motel. Definitely worth a stop to stretch your legs and grab something to eat. read more

This is one of my all time favorite out of the way (definitely very out of the way) places to stop in. They have great burgers, fries, and milkshakes and the only fuel for miles. As well as the cooked food, they have a pretty well stocked "general store" where you can pick up just about anything you might need if you are camping in the area. They will also do "one-off" catering events - we had them cater several meals for a group of 150 of us camped out on the Alvord playa. They came on-site and cooked right there. The food (burgers and hot dogs) was great. The staff are always friendly and go out of their way to provide a fun atmosphere. If you are ever in south east Oregon, it's definitely worth a detour to visit Fields Station. read more

My friends and I had a trip planned to Fields Station. Unfortunately one of the members of our party became ill and we wanted to reschedule to a later date to be make sure we are not spreading the possibility of anything due to Covid-19 pandemic. The owner refused to reschedule and even stated that the possibility of showing Covid symptoms was not as serious as getting in a car accident. Prior to the conversation with them we even checked dates to reschedule. They had plenty of dates booked out in advance and their business seems to be doing just fine. It is understandable they aren't able to refund our money since they have a 48 hour cancellation policy. However asking to move the reservation to a later date to help prevent the spread of Covid is a reasonable request. This business simply does not value it's customers and their health as much as taking their money. I highly encourage you to look elsewhere, very disappointed and they can simply do better. read more

Yup! Howdy doo! A quart of chocolate shake (served in the mixing container), a huge hamburger fried on a flat grill, all the trimmings, and french fries. All served with the hospitality and friendliness you'd expect being out in the sticks. The store is directly connected, so it's easy to buy beverages and snacks, canned goods, etc. They have a gas pump as well as diesel. They open at 7:00 or 8:00AM and close the cafe at 4:00PM. Store & gas closes at 6:00PM. Food and service is great! Been coming here off & on since 1972. read more

Yes, the shakes are very good, but it's obvious that their motto is not "customer first." We ordered a shake then waited, and waited...After 45 minutes I was worried that they had forgotten about us, went in to inquire and the Frau stated in no uncertain terms that my name would be called when it was ready. She didn't actually tell me to go outside and wait until they're good and ready to offer up my order, but probably wanted to. We will never go back. read more

I took the road less traveled - in this case NV 140/292 - and it did indeed make all the difference. It also led to a great breakfast. I might have ended up in line at a Subway on US 95 but instead I cruised in solitude through open rangeland and the town of Denio, Nevada, crossed the state line, rounded a curve and dropped into Fields. 25 years and a few owners had passed since the last time I was at Fields Station but little had really changed. Back then the proprietor was a curmudgeon named Ralph and the fridge on the front porch bore a hand-written sign that said "No beer. Don't bother." The gas pumps are still functioning out front and the buildings house a general store, cafe and very small motel. The current owner, Sandy, invited me to have a seat and cooked up the biggest plate of hashbrowns, cheese and eggs. The coffee was freshly made and decently strong, not very surprising given that Sandy once pulled espresso and baked scones at her shop in Burns. Besides the great food and a nice rest in beautiful country, I had a truly enjoyable visit with Sandy and her assistant Randy on a quiet Tuesday morning. In the hour or so I was there, one other car passed on the road slowed, stopped....then turned around and came back to get at least a cup of coffee. From a Chevron just north of Winnemucca all the way to the town of Burns, I believe this is the only gas pump on this route and it can be the only commercial stop at all, depending on the day and season. All roads do not lead to Fields. But I'll bet just about all those who take the road that does lead there stop at Fields Station for something. And they don't regret it. My only regret is that I ate too much of my ginormous breakfast to even imagine having a world-famous chocolate malt. I'll just have to go back. read more

WOW. This has got to be the most unique place I have ever been to. For hundreds of miles around Fields, there is nothing. And then there is this gem. Came here one day after exploring the Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain. The milkshakes lived up to their expectations, as did the burger and potato salad. The only game in town (and for miles and miles in any direction). Milkshakes are amazing, huge, you could share one without issue. Very pricy gas, but that's to be expected. There's a little motel attached, in case you need a place to stay, can't camp, and can't make it to Frenchglen. We rushed back here after a hike because they stop making milkshakes at 4--though the website is down so I can't confirm that this is the case. We got there at 3:50 and listened to a conversation between the lady at the counter and a real-honest-to-God mud-splattered cowboy. read more

This place is worth a stop if you're nearby. The milkshake is great (and big). The burger is real meat (not a freezer patty), but leaves something to be desired. A MUST is getting gas there--it's the only gas for many miles. The store sells all kinds of booze and other neat things (like bowls made from old cowboy rope). No public restroom, except for the well-used porta-potty. Bring hand sanitizer! read more

This wonderful, friendly, old-fashioned cafe, store, and gas station in FIelds, OR (pop. 11) serves the most fantastic breakfasts, milk shakes, and burgers. Even though we live ~1000 miles away, we make a point of getting to this cafe at least once a year. We've never stayed in the motel rooms but those who have tell us they are very nice with recently remodeled bathrooms and large rooms. read more

We stopped in and ordered milkshakes and food to go. The gal cussed at us because we ate the food outside while waiting for the shakes. Literally said that it was a big fucking deal that we ate outside while waiting. Then we waited an additional 30 mi. For the milkshakes and when we asked for an update, they said there was a a large order ahead of us. There was nobody there but us at this point. We tipped very well, were very respectful, bought souveneirs from them so very shocked they were so upset with us! This place was an oasis in the desert for me ... fuel when I needed it. Gas was a reasonable price considering being in middle of nowhere. They were very welcoming. What else can be said about this little oasis in the desert? Best milkshakes ever!! Open kitchen. Basic supplies in the small store, fuel for your return trip. Smiling faces. Be warned, a burger is 1/2 pounder and delicious. My son almost went for the Double Bacon Cheese, but I over ruled him. He would have been useless in camp after a pounder! My family and I took a road trip from Burns making a loop around the Steens Mountains. We had miscalculated our gas requirements and found the only station for miles at Fields. What an incredible surprise - not only did The Fields Station have gasoline, they also had a convenience store attached to a CAFE!! Not just any cafe, but a small restaurant serving the best hamburger and milkshakes east of the Cascade Mountains, It was incredible and my family hasn't stopped bugging me about another trip. I pass through Fields usually a couple of times a year - due to my family owning a place in the area.The Fields Station use to be a fun stop but the staff present during the last 2 visits were unfriendly and unwelcoming. There was acyounger guy and his wife/gf along with some kids a while back who were cooking in the cafe and he was just plain rude despite paying for him to make us hamburgers while he demonstrated no grasp of kitchen cleanliness. The last time we went in for a milkshake, the female owner barked at my son because he sat on a stool that was apparently for the "bar" which happens to be where the "world famous" milkshake machine is located..... When we planned our trip to the Steens we agreed we had to travel to Fields for the famous milkshake and burgers. We arrived on Saturday at 11:00am. Only one other couple was there for food. Couple cars getting fuel, but pretty quiet. Food and shake list was outside, but there were no prices listed. At this point we just wanted that milkshake and burger, so went in and ordered 2 milkshakes and two cheese/bacon burgers. Also hubby got a ball cap (no price on it either). The total was $59.40! Also we both said no tomato or lettuce. She said "its all served on the side so you just get it all, we`re too busy to do special orders". We were just trying to save them some produce that I bet is at a premium out there! Our amazing milkshakes were ready in about 10 minutes, then the wait began. After about 30 min we asked about our food and was informed they had to clean the fryer! About 15 min later we got our burgers. The meat was well, well done, bacon was undercooked. So disappointing! But the milkshake was the best we ever had. Won`t go out of our way to eat there again, but would stop for a milkshake if passing by. Oh, and don't believe the hours posted! I can't review this place technically since they wouldn't actually sell me anything. Got there a few minutes to 5 on a Saturday, hoping to score some grub before doing some outback hot springing. Oh, sorry, we close the cafe at 4:30. (even though site does not say this). Okay, what do you have? You can get a milkshake, they're amazing. Sure, let me think about it for a minute. I walk around the store BRIEFLY just to see if my hunger (I had eaten nothing all day but some trail mix) will be sated by anything in the store. Not much there that I can grab and go other than typical chips, etc. Okay, I go for the milkshake. Oh, we can't do a milkshake, it's 5:01. We stop serving milkshakes at 5. Seriously? You literally offered me one two minutes ago, and with no mention of this. No exceptions apparently. Meanwhile there's gotta be 10 people in there (probably 1/2 of the local population) sipping wine and beers. Obviously no interest in helping some random traveller. My favorite place. The owner was kind enough to let me crash on the back lawn after a backpacking trip over Steens Mountain when I had not a dollar on me to rent a room. He let me in after closing hours to pick up a couple of IPA 22s, and I returned the following morning for the biggest and best omelet ever made. Interesting people - scientists, motorcyclists, trekkers, bird-watchers, nomads, farmers - comprise the visitor population here, adding to the allure. read more

Unfortunately the service at the dinner was just horrible and off putting. Seconds after reading their sign about "being polite" because "this is Oregon", we were yelled and cussed at by the owner for no good reason. The guy who runs the station is a hot head and very rude. Maybe I just caught him on a bad day but that's just the experience that I had. Other than that, the hotel was a pretty nice place to stay at and the lady that checked us in over the phone was really nice. read more
