We decided to stop in for a visit on Saturday when the weather turned sour. Stanburn is a family run winery that sits on 20 or so planted acres. The vineyard itself is very well maintained and has a number of varietals planted. The tasting room is small and cozy and is decorated with awards, pictures, wine refrigerators, and some winery merchandise. Tabatha was very polite and was happy to talk about the winery and its history. Many wineries overlook this part and choose to focus on getting people through a tasting to get to the next group. It was nice to have a conversation to go along with the tasting. The wines were all refreshing. They are not overly tannic, so if big and bold tannic wines are your preference then you may not enjoy Stanburn's wines. Stanburn's Traminette was a treat. I find traminette to be hit or miss due to the often times unpleasant combination of aroma and residual sugar. Stanburn's take on this grape is to ferment it dryer which I found to be very pleasing. The Cab Franc Reserve was fantastic. The longer time in barrel greatly enhanced the character with a touch of oak that elevates this wine over the 2015 Cab Franc. The Chardonnay is clean and crisp and was held in stainless steel. If you avoid Chardonnay due to the "buttery" aspect, fear not. This Chardonnay was held in stainless steel which makes it a different beast compared against one fermented or aged in oak. I could keep going, but the bottom line is that if you're in the area, or if you see one of Stanburn's wines available for sale, do yourself a favor and give them a try.

There they had many good reviews. So we decided to stop in. Let me say that it was a really cool experience. The fruit wines are creative and quite good. Very good actually. For that they deserve 5 stars. They also deserve 5 stars for the ambiance and hospitality. The proprietors, Jason and Susan are very friendly and interesting conversationalists. They actually have the tasting room in a huge yurt . How cool is that?? The Hillbilly wine theme is quite catchy. Bottom line good wine, fine people and very cool setting. I would recommend this place. It was well worth the short trip from Mount Airy.

My son and I finally had an opportunity to camp at Crooked Mountain last night, and it was perfect!…read moreIt rained, but the tent pad drained extremely well and we were right next to the portapotty and cute little handwashing station/ changing area. Our dogs loved exploring the fields and beautiful trails with us. The creek sounds lulled us to sleep and what I really loved was the trees shading us from morning sunlight so my early riser child didn't feel the need to wake me up at 5:30 in the morning to go on another adventure. The sites are spacious with a fire pit and picnic table. Overall, it was a great night!

Wow, with our family having a place in Stuart, I'd passed the Wood Brothers building more times…read morethan I can count, but was never able to stop by. Now that I have had a chance to go, I know I should have made it more of a priority! The location is the former location of their NASCAR race shop, but today is just the offices for the family, and the shop itself has been turned Ed into a museum. It is totally free to visit and the employees were happy to see us come in. Admittedly not a huge nascar fan there was still a ton of cool stuff to take a look at. It is amazing how much they have kept and have organized in the shop. Dozens of cars from various series and races, tools, neat projects that Leonard Wood has built, and just general memorabilia. If you're a NASCAR fan this would certainly be worth a trip to Stuart but if you just happen to be in Stuart it is well worth a stroll through to check it out! They do also sell memorabilia there as well!

When we were traveling to Pennsylvania for a visit with family, we found out that the Wood Brothers Racing Museum was just an hour off the highway we were traveling to PA. There was no way we could just pass up the opportunity. First, the staff of the facility treated us like family from the moment we entered the door. They were very gracious to Eli and his needs (he's autistic) and allowed us basically free reign to explore the museum. All the styles of cars the Woods have raced over the years are located in the museum including Daytona 500 winning rides. There's scrap metal from the wrecked rides, photos of historical moments...and some engineers actually working on parts for the current cars. Yes, there are still people working in this garage. Even my "too cool for anything because I'm 16" son thought the museum was really cool. Bottom Line: NASCAR fans MUST make a trip to this place.
