I want to like Field Station. I like their concept, renewing an out of date motel and curating an adventure hub that you can rely on for a consistent experience across their brand (though their Moab location was sold to a corporate chain). But after multiple stays, I'm concluding it's all a bit half-assed, and not well-thought out. The good things: the entire campus is so clean. Our rooms were immaculate, very modern, and common spaces were cute and welcoming. The beds are 1000% the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever stayed on. Towels are comfortable, and I ended up ordering a set the first time I stayed here. Our spacious room was great for organizing and sorting gear before/after JTree adventures. And the Nomadix blankets are great for winter stays - they turn into a cape that I can multitask in (read: have a drink by the fire pit) while staying cozy. Oh, and I was given a returning customer discount when I emailed ahead of booking. Now for the not so good things that you should consider before staying here: 1. It's an old hotel with thin walls, despite the refurbishment. You will hear your neighbors, and your neighbors will hear you. And if you have a grumpy guest yelling at the poor staff for things out of their control, you'll hear that too. 2. It likely depends on the room, but don't plan to use all 5 beds if you book the double bunk room. We booked the room for a group of climbers, and luckily our 5th opted to get a separate room with their partner because one of the top bunks is directly beneath both the ceiling lamp (heating the bed space and blocking the light from reaching most of the room that doesn't have any other lighting) and beneath the only air vent in the room (which kicks on every 30 minutes, directly into the pillow side of the upper bunk). I "slept" in this bunk one night, and couldn't figure out a way to block the air from sweeping onto me and waking me up every time. 3. No matter the room, it comes with an uncomfortable camping bench for two. Yes even in the room supposedly meant for 10. The luggage bench, with its bumpy rubber rails (our room was missing the bench cushions other rooms had) was not suitable for anyone trying to play board games (nor was the tiny table). We grabbed the folding chair out of the primary bedroom and pulled in the 2 Adirondack chairs from the balcony. 4. There's two outlets in the main living area - one for the fridge and one for supposedly 8 people's worth of rechargeables. No extension cords or surge protectors at Field Station, we asked. In a smaller room I stayed in, they were part of the furniture next to the bed. In the double bunk room, plan to invade the primary bedroom with your phones, watches, headlamps, battery packs, etc. 5. The WiFi was shoddy enough in our building that not even the TV could connect to anything. After 20 minutes of letting it buffer, freeze, and snow, we gave up. 6. The bathroom is claustrophobically small, you'll have to spin in place to close the door. The window looks directly into another bathroom. And there is extremely limited spots to hang a wet towel - ONE hook in or near the bathroom, no crossbar under the sink, no rod in what used to be the closet alcove, anything. We got creative hanging it from chairs and bed posts, but this felt ridiculous for it not being a hostel. 7. No amenities in room except for a fridge and a thermostat (which was a plus that it worked well). The microwave is in the lobby, purchase coffee at the cafe, and we brought our own camp kitchen to slap some sandwiches together before we headed out for the day. 8. Don't expect to use the fire pit for s'mores. I'd called in advance to ask, and got incorrect info that we could roast mallows, but staff politely asked us not to because they can't have things dripping into the metal rings. 9. Gear shop doesn't have much in the way of gear. It's 90% clothing with a few technical items under a glass display case. Familiar brands like Outdoor Research and Black Diamond though! All in all, our stay was nearly $1,000 and there were far more cons than pros. I'd recommend Field Station for a couple or family, but if you want to book as a group in a suite, I'd continue looking.

The Field station is a motel, located off the main highway. Pros + friendly front desk staff, + water available in the lobby + complimentary Wi-Fi + pool and hot tub available, towels available at the pool area. There's also a gender neutral bathroom by the pool for use. + the lobby area has several tables and chairs and seating if you wanna hang out. There are books about Joshua trees in national parks. There's also a few games available to play. + outside the motel, there were picnic tables, and fire pit for guest to use. + parking available + refrigerator in the room Cons - roughly 40-45 minutes from the Joshua Tree - no coffee maker or microwave in the room - the body wash was nearly empty during our visit - no ice machine, you need to go ask for ice at the coffee bar Overall, it was a pleasant stay. Can't wait to come back!

Nice property. The place serves the mountain biking and hiking community very well. The room we had was very comfortable and quiet. Dog and I did the fire pit--very relaxing. The front desk offers cafe drinks and lite breakfast and lunch items--very delicious. Shout out to Amberlyn at the check in and check out for great, friendly assistance. I'd give this property a six star review if app permitted.

The rooms are well appointed and clean. It's nice to have such a cool, dog-friendly option in the area. Beds are comfy and coffee at the front desk is included. I lucked out with an early check in. The front desk was super helpful (I got a flat tire and they recommended a tire shop). My dog loved the stay too.

Lobby of Field Station, very modern, clean, and friendly.

YELP SHORT ANSWER: As a sister business to AutoCamp, this is a different experience but very nicely done. LOCATION: This is a destination location near entry to Joshua Tree National Park, you need a reason to come here. Our stay was for a concert nearby. FACILITY: an highly update hotel, nice layout with pool and a lot of outdoor spaces. Very quiet. MENU: As a hotel, you'd be surprised what food they do offer in the lobby mixed use area... it's great.: STAFF: from check in to check out everyone was exceptional. OVERALL VALUE: I am sure you can find cheaper in this area but none nicer or a better value. We have stayed at AutoCamp which is amazing but double Field Station pricing and you need to stay two nights I believe. TIP: ask for a quiet room at booking time, this is a large hotel with some rooms getting highway noise.

If I could give zero stars, I would. We arrived at Field Station Joshua Tree at 1 PM, excited to start our trip -- instead, we've spent hours sitting in the lobby with no room, no updates, and no idea when (or if) we'll actually check in. It's now two hours past the official check-in time, and the staff couldn't be less helpful. No manager on site, no communication, no accountability. Just a lot of blank stares and excuses. The staff is disorganized, and completely unprofessional. Field Station looks good online, but don't be fooled -- this place is a complete operational mess. Spend your money elsewhere.

There's a lot to love about this motel. They did a really great job on the remodel. The grounds are nice, fire pits and space to relax throughout the property. I was happy to see a hospitality group take over the former sad ass Travelodge and give this place much needed love. Outdoor adventure theme is cool, with a little gear and apparel shop up front. I love the big minimalist rooms. Always clean with large firm mattresses. Was bummed that this stay in my room felt like constant mini earthquakes due to the construction on the adjacent road. Starts super early weekdays. Probably best to stay on the other side of the motel if possible. No fault of motel but they need to inform guests this is going on - it's pretty nuts. The pool and jacuzzi area are nice. Wish the pool was heated. Sweet cafe and lounge area and the staff are always amazing and incredibly helpful. I've been staying here since they opened and it's a convenient and relatively inexpensive option if you're headed to the park or pappy's for a show. I love that I repeatedly see the same staff at the front desk. Makes me think kindly of the management.

My stay was almost great - clean, well appointed, attractive and modern rooms. Nice concept. Unfortunately, after checking out a mysterious charge appeared on my card. I called that same day for an explanation, got the runaround and was told to call back the next day when a supervisor would be on duty. I did, was told again that the charge was indeed suspicious, and that supervisors (Luke or David) would call me back. Of course they did not. So once again I called them, 2 days later. Neither deigned to take my call and instead sent a message thru the front desk clerk that these charges take at least 5 business days to fall off. Still no explanation for why someone tried to take an extra $84 off of me. This is shady and inferior hosp management and I won't be returning or recommending this establishment.

We only stayed for one night but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Check-in instructions were sent via email and there's a code to unlock the room. The grounds are very pretty, perfect for a desert wedding or party. There are great views all around and there aren't any neighbors nearby. It looks like they own a lot of acreage nearby. The room we stayed in was the Onyx room. It was beautifully and thoughtfully decorated. There are lots of nice additions in the room to ensure you enjoy staying in from wine glasses, a wine fridge, record player with a record collection, bath salts, star gazing area outside with a mattress, and comfy robes and slippers to use during your stay. If it were warmer, I definitely would've tried out the outdoor tub and shower but it was too cold at night to even think about it. There's also a large community pool in the works. As mentioned earlier, this hotel is about a mile from the NP so it's an excellent choice for anyone going there. It's also not too far from town so you're not too far from stores and cafes. I am definitely planning on staying here again!

There's only two rooms but each are beautifully decorated w so much attention to detail! Both have their own private outdoor area that is huge. Don't worry there is an indoor bathroom as well with an amazing shower. Everything was so well thought out! Each room has a fridge that is stocked up with large bottles of water, k cups, teas, creamers and sugar. They give you plenty of towels. There's also bath salts to use for when you enjoy the outdoor tub. They make sure the check in process is smooth and easy. There's also housekeeping available (free only if you stay 3 nights or more). There is a beautiful common outdoor area with a fire pit, swings and seating. There is also a common area with a large living room that has a microwave. I can't stop singing praises about this place! Sacred Sands absolutely rocked it!

There was a leftover food container in the in room refrigerator. The bedding and towels were clean. In fact the towels appeared to be new. When I took a shower the water went cold after a few minutes. I don't take long showers, just enough to soap, shampoo and rinse. The breakfast was spare: oatmeal, a couple of choices of cereal, toast and packaged danish. There was coffee and milk along with watered down orange juice. No yogurt, eggs of any kind or fruit. The bed was comfortable and the room was quiet so we slept well.

There was a visible to me roach problem on property. I counted at least 20 of these little critters by the walkways in front of the doors, in the rocks, by the cars etc.. I had gone to Pappy and Harriets for dinner and upon arriving back to call it a night (around 10:15pm) is when they were all out. Since it was dark I was using my phone's flashlight to to walk towards my unit. That's when I started to notice them. They were in the dirt, in the walkway and on the doormat. There was even one in the crevice of my unit trying to sneak in. When I flashed the light, I saw several of them scurry into the building crevices and being a prior Floridian of over 20 years, this gave me the major ick bc that means there is probably a huge infestation beneath the walls. They were nice and tried to move me rooms and on my way there I also saw a huge palmetto roach so I was like nope I'm done and loaded the car and did the 2 hour drive at 11pm. Staff was nice but seemingly they know this is a problem that comes up every so often. As staff admitted to me that the rooms closest to P&H and the parking lot have a bigger problem. They need to nip it so that people can stay comfortably at their motel. The weekend before, the motel was charging like 400-550 a night and honestly having that many roaches around property is unacceptable. Sadly after this, I can't come back. Would like to acknowledge that my 2 night reservation was refunded with no hesitation. Props to the owners for that.

Thank goodness, my impulse gave me some patience to scroll through available rooms at Pioneertown Motel's website. The Red Cabin caught my attention immediately. Although the website's description doesn't offer further detail on cabin amenities, feel free to call the office and ask your questions. At least Red Cabin parking is available at the backyard, next to Red Dog Saloon. I thought we had to park closer to the motel property and trek- since parking on Mane Street is frowned upon. I felt a review for the Red Cabin, specifically was needed- since I haven't stumbled upon one on Yelp or Google. There are NO tv's. If you are aware of that ahead of time, you were given a heads up. Since this is not mentioned on their website. Yes, there is a guitar & tambourine available. And I happily enjoyed both. Although, I'm sure I annoyed my husband and friends. LOL Record player available & many awesome records to listen to. Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Mama & The Papas, The Beetles, & Alan Jackson to name a few. Sadly, no needle available for the record. I spoke to the front desk & management said they were on order. Nespresso machines just arrived the day before our arrival. And one is also available in The Canteen. WiFi is strong inside and near the Red Cabin. Huge front porch that has cushioned seats and provides great shade from blistering sun. The AC was up and running when we unlocked the doors. Which would definitely come in handy during hotter days. Both bedrooms also offer tower fans and mini space heaters. In the middle of the night, somehow the heat kicked inside the cabin & I thought my friend who slept on the couch turned it up in the middle of the night- she didn't. And she thought it was us! So, I wonder if it's on an automatic timer? Also, when we checked into the office, I asked if there'd be enough blankets and pillows. She told us to check the chest/ trunk in the bedroom. When we did- there were pillows. So, after dinner (Pappy & Harriet's) we walked to the office for the extra blankets. As for the picture of the L shaped leather couch on the website for Red Cabin... that couch is no longer available. Which was one of the reasons we booked the Red Cabin. Instead- there are 2 couches. The black leather couch sits on a wooden frame. The leather support straps under the cushions won't hold much weight and there's no support DIRECTLY under both cushions, and you could fall through. Use with caution. The brown sofa has three sections and will shift while you're sleeping- if you move while sleeping. Yikes. The mattresses in both rooms are comfortable and we all got a good nights sleep. The pillows were small and thin. We spent two nights trying to get a few minutes of sleep; didn't work out well. The water coming from the sinks was milky-- not sure if it was the hotel or the town, but didn't see it anywhere outside of the hotel. The shower head sucked as well as the water pressure from it. There was about 1/2 inch of toilet paper left and no spare rolls, had to ask for more TP. The room had a full kitchen but nothing else, no plates, cups, silverware, sponges, paper towels, dishes soap... nothing. They left 2 plastic wrapped throw away plastic cups on the table. There's no clock/alarm clock in the room so you can't tell what time it is. Finally found a completely trashed alarm clock in one of the cupboards in the kitchen and it was disgusting. There was no coffee maker in the room. No bottled water in the room. It kind of felt like someone possibly lives in this room when it's not rented out to customers? We felt ripped off at spending $345 for two nights. Besides the bathroom being okay, the only other nice thing about it was that the hotel was very quiet because nobody else was staying there. I really enjoyed our stay and what I mention next is not bad just tips that I would have liked to have known: We stayed in Suite 1 which was closest to the road and it was tough for baby to take his naps. The rooms have lots of windows but none of the shades fully block the window, again making it hard for him to take naps and, for adults, hard to sleep in when the sun is blistering through the windows at 7am haha (it doesn't matter we're up at 7 anyways), the kitchen was very small, I so wish it had a microwave or an oven. Lastly, the floors are concrete, which I'm sure is appreciated during the summer, but in the winter, even with the heaters on at almost 80 F, I was absolutely freezing when sleeping, i had to wear my slippers and a turtle neck to stop shivering. My husband was fine, but I'm a cold person and I wished I had an extra blanket. Location was great and close to the West entrance and super close to the visitor center and Road Runner cafe (side note, just go to Walmart a little further and get food for the park, Road Runner was expensive and the sandwiches were ok at best). The icing on the cake was my golden retriever was also welcome. He thoroughly enjoyed having a safe, enclosed area to chill with his humans. For sure, the next trip to the 29 Palms side of Joshua Tree will include another stay here. Highly recommend here for a very unique, relaxed, pet friendly respite!
