It's especially good for toddlers, as it has a nice play area, a duck pond, lots of mature trees and squirrels, and in summer there are two paddling pools. When the weather is good, a very charming Italian gentleman rolls up in his equally vintage ice cream van, I remember him from when I was a kid myself! The Hall itself is now a school, but has some nice gardens around it which are good for picnicking. There's free parking and no entry fee. The toilets can be a bit gross in summer.

Riverbank is great for picnics. Kids didn't want to leave!

And for those who don't like camping in a tent, they have a few old gypsy caravans available for hire.

As we only have a folding camper we made good use of the toilets in the Sainsburys in town. Possibly because of the lack of facilities the two times that we have been there have been very few children which does mean that the site is quiet except for the parakeets which are quite noisy in the mornings. Do be aware that there is quite a long narrow road approaching the campsite. Could be awkward at busy times.

This site misses out on 5 stars, for a few points, some of which are being improved upon due to…read moreongoing site upgrades, others which need consideration. None of them spoiled our weekend, and for the price, this site is a gem. The site has two fields for camping. The first includes both tents and caravans and includes power points. It also features free-range chickens, which we decided to avoid. The other field was dedicated to tents and has no electric hook ups. On the minus side: A water tap in the 'tent' field would save relatively long walks with heavy water cans. Whilst the new showers were very good and clean, the water did run cold at busy times over the May bank holiday weekend. The showers are new for 2011 and the water heating is due for an upgrade in 2012, so this problem should be short-lived. Note the old showers to the rear of he Hall still require a 50p payment in the meter. Not a problem for me, but if you're used to wet shaving, there was a lack of hot water and a mirror in front of a sink On the plus side: afternoon cream teas were served from the coffee shop on the lawn An on-site bar and coffee shop An on-site farm shop, with farm shop prices, but the quality to go with it 5 minute walk to the Kings Arms, Wing Within a stones throw of Rutland Water Free wi-fi available in the vicinity of the hall well priced campsite and friendly staff Overall, I would recommend this site to a friend, especially if you're an outdoor type looking to explore Rutland Water and the surrounding countryside.
