A friendly couple was behind the counter cooking on a flat top and frier but the place itself is clearly a cheap beer, smokes and drink spot that was pretty dirty. There were a few people inside clearly intoxicated already by lunch time sitting at a make shift bar and just sipping tall boy cans of Old English and Rolling Rock. The cheeseburger I ordered was OK and cheap for the platter which came with fries, but I could have gotten that cheeseburger anywhere for sure. It's hardly a kitchen it's really just a cheap beer store that serves edible average breakfast, wings, burgers and fries. The name and theme of the place pays homage to the historic Hilldale Athletic Club, a Negro league baseball team that played at a 8,000 seat ball field in Darby in the early 1900's. They have an awesome mural of the team on a wall above one of the coolers. The club won the 1925 Negro League World Series played at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia and featured three members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. (This is why we CAN have nice things) The selection of wines and liquors is fairly standard but it seems like there is always something sitting on the shelf that I've never noticed before. The staff is generally courteous if not highly versed in the assorted merits of their stock. I've never waited behind more than 2 people either, which means it's easy to pop in and out while you're running around doing other things. Liquor!

I was able to find most of what I was looking for but the place where there should have been a basket tray full of ginger was very bare and what was left looked pretty old and worn. I know you don't wear food but these remnants of ginger looked like that had to have been worn because the wear and tear on them. They could have had few more cashiers but that has been my experience with ShopRite lately. It's a decent supermarket with a variety of foods and more that cover a number of ethnic foods and such. I like them. As for customer service, I didn't encounter anyone so I can't share that experience. They were out of ad with coupons and it is only Monday. I wonder if the store gets a bonus for all the savings that their customers could have received. I don't know just thinking out loud. Anyway! Happy I decided to stop in and give Shoprite another whirl. They had circulars and the ginger was a little better.

I bought a nice bottle of dry white with the help from the gracious person who worked there, we got three wine glasses and sat outside on the first balmy night of spring in Philly. We were a part of the West Philly vibe as sidewalk people passed us and we enjoyed the delightful bottle while hanging out on a beautiful spring evening. We could have ordered from the bottle shop menu, or bought delightful snacks from the shop. But you know what? We had already eaten and weren't hungry which was the charm of everything because... no expectations. Such a great place with such great selections. I SO recommend.
