I am genuinely embarrassed that I brought my team here…read more I made a reservation. They knew ahead of time that I was bringing my team for a meeting. We showed up, ordered wine and pizzas, and planned to enjoy the winery while we met. Within about five minutes of arriving, I was approached twice about parking because they had "customers coming." Except... we WERE customers. There was also a reservation for a group of 18 that day. That group arrived on bicycles, which were not parked in the parking lot. And throughout our approximately three-hour visit, multiple tables remained empty. Our photographer had already spent probably 15 minutes talking with staff before we arrived and was waved in and directed where to go. Nobody told him that he needed to park somewhere else. Then suddenly, once the rest of us arrived, moving vehicles became incredibly urgent. That pretty much set the tone for the entire experience. Then there was the wine. Five fruit flies poured out of one of our bottles of wine into the glass. We brought it to their attention. The response was, "Would you like a new glass?" A new glass. My husband did raise concerns about the way we were being treated. When other customers arrived, I specifically quieted that conversation because I did not want our experience to interfere with theirs. So I was particularly surprised when management later accused my husband of yelling at a staff member in front of guests. That absolutely did not happen, and I was there. We stayed approximately three hours and spent money, although by that point I honestly ordered food partly because I felt obligated to. I already wanted to leave. I was embarrassed that I had chosen this place for my team because I did not feel like we were wanted there. And here's the part that makes the whole thing especially unfortunate from a business standpoint: eight people in our group are business owners. Four own multiple businesses and were specifically exploring this winery as somewhere they might return to in the future. Not because we deserved special treatment. We didn't. But we absolutely expected to be treated like customers. Unfortunately, the response from management afterward made the experience worse. I was told that what we had wasn't a "reservation," it was a "three-hour meeting." Yes. It was a meeting. They knew it was a meeting when I made the reservation. If meetings aren't welcome, say that when someone tells you they're bringing a group for a meeting. If there's a time limit, say that. If there are specific parking requirements, say that. None of those things were communicated to me beforehand. I love supporting local businesses. I especially love introducing other people to local businesses I enjoy. Unfortunately, I won't be introducing anyone else to this one, because I won't be back.

After moving here a few months ago we found the tamales were often a favorite when we went to…read moreMexican restaurants. As such, I made a comment one day that there should be a tamale Festival. To our great delight, we found that there had been 12 prior and that this year would be celebrating the 13th one! We mosied on down on a Saturday afternoon, with some friends in tow. We found an amazing meeting of some of the most delicious Mexican food we've had since time started. The event is held a long one of the main streets in downtown Wapato and encompassed about three blocks worth of real estate. The different stands where everything from local favorites, two food trucks, two people making tamales as part of fundraisers for different organizations. Many of the places also served street style tacos, Indian tacos and one guy was even roasting some boss looking chicken One of the stands with selling a number of different beverages including Horchata, strawberry lemonade and a number of different juices, each one of which we sampled was delicious. I'll food items range between a dollar and five dollars, with most of them being in $1.50 range. Everything we had here was good and it was really nice to be able to move around from stand to stand, sampling the different tamales. By the end of the afternoon we doll eaten roughly the Weight of one of our arms in tamales, and it was so good! The DJ that was in the center of the festival did a great job keeping things lightly, and while we didn't stay for the voting, I believe there was a best of show type event. The only thing that would make this better is if there were a king or queen of tamales crowned, and it included any and everyone from the community. Based on the offerings that were available, I would imagine that the stuff that people make at home in the area is absolutely mind blowing. Well worth checking out in something that we will be planning on going to on a yearly basis!

Walking in, you find yourself in the gift shop with plenty of different options from trinkets to jewelry and clothing to books (about the area and from local authors) with just about everything in between. To your right is the main exhibit area. It was something like $10 per adult and well worth it. The exhibits start with a couple that highlight the terrain and the animals that live in the northwest. Good info for adults and lots for kids to look at! Our guide gave us some wonderful information on how each animal fit into the lives of the people groups from the area. From there we saw some great examples of living arrangements from partially underground dwellings (wigwams I think) to huge longhouses and tepees. All were quite impressive. Tools, pottery and jewelry were also on display. My favorite part of the tour however was the historical section where our guide spoke about the treaties and history of the people groups. Prior to this trip, I didn't know about the 14 tribes and bands that formed the Yakama nation. Like a lot of stories, some of the things done are much different than would likely play out today, but ignoring he history won't change it and learning about it helps everyone understand it better. They have some of the only pictures of the treaty being signed as well as some of the original copies of the actual treaty. It's very impressive! The place can take 20 minutes to walk through or a number of hours, depending on your interest in the subject matter. End of the day, this is a very impressive collection that showcases some of the early events that helped shape the valley. Everyone in the area owes it to themselves to check it out.
