I would NOT recommend Michael from Fences NW to do fence work. He quoted a one day job to build a new fence section, replace an existing section, and replace older boards and re-stain it all! We knew this was not possible, but when questioned, he assured us that he could deliver. He seemed reputable, had great reviews, was close to our home, and he could start right away, which we needed, so we hired him. He showed late up to work on the stated start date, then left as he came without the needed materials to start. He was gone over 2 hours looking for supplies, returned and then realized he didn't get the correct nozzle for the power washer! He was disorganized and unprepared...seemed to be running to Home Depot all the time. This was just one of several examples of poor time management and the job stretched out for 4 actual work days...spread over 2 weeks. The final straw was that he said he couldn't find post caps to put on the new fence posts. He promised he would look for something to match and "come back" to finish the job, but never did so. I paid him his money...MY MISTAKE. My husband called him twice after he failed to put on the post caps within the timeframe he had quoted. He left messages, none of which were returned. Michael later texted me that he wasn't able to find anything close in style and size to the existing caps...BUT, he offered to build them for us @ $35.00 a piece ( for 6 caps!)...REALLY? I ended up going to Lowe's and found comparable ones for $4.00 / piece and finished the posts myself. Also, he did a poor job on the staining, which he charged me an additional $400.00+ to do! I have never posted a poor review on Yelp! before, but I feel like he was out to take us for all he could get! We just had a chain link fence replaced with a 6' cedar fence by Michael from Fences NW. The new fence looks really great. From the first contact, Michael was easy to deal with, courteous, and responsive on phone, text, and email. His pricing was in line with what other fence companies were quoting and, I think because his business is relatively new, he was able to get us scheduled quicker than some of the big guys. From initial contact to fence done was about 11 days. He worked extremely hard getting our new fence in. On the first day he took out the old fence and put in the new wood posts. I did some QA with a level and tape measure that night after he left and couldn't believe how straight the line was, how level/plumb all of the posts were, and how evenly spaced they were. Definitely put my mind at ease when I saw how high quality the workmanship was. The next day he came back to finish the job and worked 10+ hours to get us back to fully fenced. The materials look good (nice cedar 2x4s on top, 6' cedar pickets all along, pressure treated rails on the back, metal hangers). He even threw in a gate at no extra charge. All in all I'd call it a really great experience. I will say that I was hesitant at first to hire a company without that many reviews and history, but Michael proved he's for real. I feel like I just dealt with a con artist and people should be warned. Please see Sherrie B's review as well. I wish that review had gone up before I hired this guy as my experience was similar but my work never actually got done. Michael came in to pressure wash a dog run a couple weeks ago, but he showed up without a pressure washer. Note that there wasn't a 'crew' or 'team' that some of the positive reviews mentioned, it was just him. The dog run needed to be painted so he went and looked at it. Until this point he had quoted $300 to pressure wash and paint. We realized that I did not have enough paint for the job so he said he can go get the paint but that it will cost me $412 instead of $300 since 'his time is valuable' and he'll have to 'run around' for the paint. I live 10 mins from the nearest paint store so that's extremely odd but I said ok since I needed the job done asap. He asked me for a deposit which I gave him. $120. He comes back with a pressure washer, pressure washes the fence and then tells me he can't actually paint for several days since the weather wasn't conducive. Umm shouldn't you have seen that before you pressure washed? I said ok, since I wasn't spoilt for choice. Then he tells me since we can't do the job immediately I can go get the paint myself which I said is fine. Now because I was going to get the paint myself I asked him what I can expect to pay for labor since he had jacked up his rate by more than $100 for his "valuable time." He tells me it will be the same even if I got the paint. !!!!!!!!! I was annoyed by that so told him he can get the paint. I am not getting up and going to the store if I am paying you that much money to get the paint, no sir. So he tells me I will need to pay him for the paint which I did, $200 on top of the $120 deposit I had already given him. This was obviously my mistake and I should have trusted my instincts when this guy insisted on charging me the extra 100 but faith in humanity etc etc So now when the weather is nice, I start texting him and am told on 3 separate occasions that he is all booked up. He then asks me if I am ready to put my job on hold. Err no thank you, please give me my money back. He says he will return the $200 but not the deposit. I tell him take out what you want for pressure washing although it's a waste of money for me but keeping the entire deposit is not fair. And I quote from Michael "I don't think our gas prices are fair, guess what. I have to pay for their premiums." Notice how he doesn't disagree with the fact that it's not fair, he just thinks a lot of things in life are unfair so I should just deal with the unfairness of this situation. This is all on text so to anyone wondering if I am paraphrasing, I am not. What's unacceptable is that he did not have to pressure wash anything, take my money and vanish. What a horrible experience. This is the kind of contractor that gives the rest a bad name. The positive reviews on Yelp seem suspicious now. I still don't have my deposit back. He had told me on Oct 10 that he'll come by on Oct 12, Wednesday to drop off the 200 but when I texted him he said his "accountant" had mailed the check. It is now end of day Oct 17 and nothing. I am not expecting the check to arrive but I will update if it actually does. Please do not trust this guy with your hard earned money. read more
