Our large group was treated to a private event here and everything was great. We had a three-course menu and a wine paired with each course and there was a bread basket throughout. Appetizer was shrimp toast. I have a shellfish allergy, so I was treated to mushroom toast. Whenever I have to trade foods for my allergy, I've usually got FOMO, since the replacement is never as good. But not true here! The mushroom toast was excellent. We had a lovely white wine paired with it as well. Main course was a veal chop with a wild rice cream sauce and assorted vegetables. Also very good, although more rare than I would typically order. One of Jimmy's Swedish colleagues said that if we could only visit one place while in Stockholm, it should be Fem Små Hus. So we made reservations for a Saturday night at 8:45 (the day before). We got into the area sooner than we expected, and we were hungry, so we showed up early and asked if we could be seated early. We checked my coat and headed down the stairs to the host stand. We were fully prepared to wait at the bar if needed, but the host was able to find us a seat a full 25 minutes before our reservation (and able to cancel the reservation I'd made for Sunday night, forgetting that European calendars show Sunday as the last day of the week). Winding through the top 2 rooms down the stairs and around the back, we were seated at the last table of what used to be the coal cellar. They've added nice lighting to accentuate the bricks, brighten the sides. I sat on a padded banquette with pillow, while Jimmy had a chair. Our server for the evening was excellent. She was knowledgeable, spoke English well, and was willing to talk with us about how to make the evening memorable. She talked us through the specialty Swedish cocktails, and we decided on the Myggan (Swedish mojito - with cloudberries and cloudberry liquer) and the Sommarfläkt ("Summer breeze" - berry martini). The cocktails were beautiful and delicious - the right balance of alcohol and flavor. Jimmy got the 4-course house menu which featured: Kalix roe for starter, Reindeer steak with potato & cheese croquettes for main, cheese course, and chocolate mousse with cloudberries for dessert. I created my own menu: SOS (4 types of herring and some cheese), Veal Anna Lindberg with potatoes au gratin, and Swedish apple pie for dessert. Rather than choosing the alcohol pairings for each course, Jimmy started with sparkling wine for his roe, and I started with beer and aquavit for my herring. Then we decided on a Chianti Classico with our servers help to go with our mains. The food was divine - the ingredients were fresh, the components the right temperature, the presentation beautiful. My highlights were the dill and red-onion herring, the Swedish cheese, and the morel sauce on the veal, and the cloudberries that accompanied the chocolate mousse. This restaurant was recommended to me by one of Stockholm's top Yelpers and it fitted the bill perfectly. Fem Sma Hus translates as five small houses and it really is the perfect description of how this building is laid out. Five town house all interconnecting meaning that there are numerous rooms in which you can eat, each with its own individual character, lending itself a lovely ambiance but also making it easy to get lost in - trying to find the loos and the exit was a definite challenge! I was seated in a downstairs area that felt like a cellar, with low curved ceilings that felt cosy as opposed to claustrophobic. I was dining alone this evening but the staff made me feel very comfortable and welcome which was a nice touch. I was presented with a large bread basket and water on the table. There were three different types of bread, including the traditional Swedish crisp bread, and all were tasty. The menu focuses on typical Swedish cuisine which was just what I was looking for. They do set menu's but there were things that I specifically wanted to try so this didn't work out for me. It's quite pricey, but pretty much everywhere in Sweden is! For starter I went for the pickled herring four ways - herby, curried, tomato and apple, and fried. All were very tasty. A chunk of strong cheese was also served on the plate. An unusual combination, but all good as individual items. For main course, I couldn't resist the reindeer. This came as three large pieces served with loganberries, greens, and a delightfully smooth mash potato. The sauce was rich and full of flavour and the loganberries were sharp enough to cut through the stronger flavours and refresh the palate. Overall, a really tasty dish. Walk down these steps and you are in for a treat. Fem Sma Hus (the five houses) is not only a great place to eat and drink (and spend money) - but it is also in a fantastic location - filled with the ancient spirits of the culinary dead. In fact - chefs at this location have offered food to the public since the 1600s. It is situated in the heart of Gamla Stan - Stockholm's old city - right next to a famous statue of Saint George - which you can stroll past before dinner while you await your table - and then during the meal your can take a break to come back here and throw up like a Roman Patrician before you go back and eat some more. In the summer there is an outdoor cafe in the front - but DON'T TAKE THE BAIT. The interior is so much more interesting and unique - if you miss it - you will cry - and I will slap you. Fem Sma Hus spans the stone/brick vaulted basements and wine cellars of five old houses built when your great great great great grandmother wasn't even a glint in her great great grandfather's eye. It is an amazing environment of ancientness and gastronomic deliciousity - mixed with Aqua Vit and a hundreds of bottles of fine wines. This is where saintly foodies go when they die. So - there are a number of prix fixe menus - which I recommend choosing from: (why try to reinvent the wheel when the chefs who know their fare and fodder have set you up so well). The most famous menu here is the one named after one of the early pioneer food-smiths in this spot; Anna Lindberg, who ran a tavern in the house above during the 17 century. This prix fixe menu includes Fem Sma Hus's signature dish - which is veal fillet Anna Lindberg... served with morel sauce... potato gratin... and lots 'o' love. This goes for around seventy bucks for the five or so courses. But I always buck the trend and pick the more expensive menu because its main course is Reindeer - and I love reindeer - (why eating reindeer is banned in the United States I will never understand; it is not an endangered food source - and it is deeee-lishh!). The reindeer menu comes with the cloud-berry dessert - although my favorite sweet here is the saffron pancake which accompanies the least expensive menu. If you want the yummy apple pie then its going to have to be the Anna Lindberg veal. All of the prix fixe menus come with sides and starters. The Five Houses also serves a type of caviar that really makes you feel like a king - without having to over-tax your subjects for it. And if you don't eat fish-eggs (silly you) then try the gravlax or the the raw salmon salad starter - both are great. Each prix fixe menu comes with a special wine-pairing - but you have to order it separately - SO BY THE GODS ORDER IT! (or you can ask one of the many professionally trained sommelier to help pick some good matches). And if you have an ounce of room left in your over-stuffed gullet after this amazing meal - fill in the edges with the after dinner cheese tray - it is chef-selected-delectability incarnate. When we first walked into this restaurant, it felt like a home. There's no way you could just sit down and have dinner here, you just take a tour around this place! There are about five different houses (sections), each section had its own authenticity and a feeling of home. The service was remarkable, the servers were extremely attentive and were knowledgeable on what was on the menu. The serve took a while to get back to us each time, it was expectable given that the place was full after 6pm. We ordered the veal, the cured salmon, the reindeer and a bottle of 2015 wine. Each dish comes with a side of potatoes made differently. The veal was cooked medium rare and it was perfectly touched with seasoned vegetables. Our dessert consisted of vanilla ice cream with strawberries and rhubarb sorbet. The whipped cream that came with the ice cream had almost a mousse consistency when tasted with the ice cream. It started raining and There was only one tiny table available outside. Expecting to get turned away (like the last couple places we tried) the service was more then accommodating to squeeze us into the table even if it meant them having a harder time accessing other tables. The name Fem Sma Hus translates to Five Small Houses, which is descriptive of how the restaurant is constructed--five "townhouses" joined together, going three stories below ground to form very intimate dining rooms. My wife had a veal cutlet (she's not an adventurous eater), and I chose the reindeer with lingonberry sauce, which was delicious. It had a taste similar to calf's liver, but not as strong, and the consistency of veal. The appetizers included gravlax with creme fraiche, and was as good as I've ever eaten. Desserts were some type of sherbet and a combination of fresh berries, both simply wonderful in their simplicity, blending a mild sweetness with a natural tartness. The restaurant was difficult to find, but well worth the effort. Prices were reasonable for Stockholm, which is a very expensive city. I vaguely recall spending about $250 for the two of us for dinner with a little wine, including gratuity. If we go back to Stockholm, I'd definitely dine here again. read more

What a wonderful restaurant to stumble into! We were famished after a LOT of walking around the city and kept striking out with restaurants being closed (it was a Sunday night) so we decided to head over to Gamla Stan where we had previously had a fantastic meal at The Hairy Pig Deli a block away. Hoping for an equally delicious meal, we peeked at the menu posted out front, decided it fit our needs and walked in. We were greeted by a friendly bartender who pointed us downstairs to the main restaurant. A cozy, quiet, dimly lit space full of old world charm, we were seated right away (there were only a few other parties dining at the time). We had a lovely, attentive waitress who helped guide our selections: we started with a bottle of wine and the elk carpaccio, and for mains we got the seared arctic char and the reindeer filet. Everything was incredible! The carpaccio was tender and flavorful and a very generous portion (as was the complimentary bread basket). The char was cooked to perfection and served with some sort of foam that unexpectedly enhanced the dish. The filet was also cooked perfectly, served with a demi glace and a large crock of potatoes au gratin on the side. Needless to say, we cleaned all our plates and were pleasantly stuffed. It's always a joy to happen upon a restaurant without any recommendations or prior research and enjoy a great meal! I highly recommend Fem Sma Hus. read more

Loved this place, it looks a lot like you are going to eat in the dungeons, or maybe a wine cave. Only thing I can complain about is the temperature as is was very hot, of course Stockholm was having ver unseasonably hot weather and few places have air conditioning. Food was great, I had the filet of reindeer and it was very good despite the "eating Rudolph" jokes from the rest of the group. Service was a bit spotty as there was only one server and it seemed busier than they expected. Kitchen staff brought out the food so it was served hot and promptly. Decent wine list and great prices. I have been to Fem Små Hus 4 times since my son and I stumbled across it while exploring Gamla Stan in 2001. It remains one of my favorite places in the world. The food is classic Scandinavian fare prepared with innovative sauces and interesting embellishments that are simply scrumptious. The environment oozes with cozy charm. The dining areas are spread across five levels of barrel vaulted brick rooms. My favorite is the lowest level. The waitstaff are knowledgeable and willing to offer advice when asked, but they are not pushy and will let you find your way through the extensive menu. It was good to return for another great meal this week. Things haven't changed much, and that is just fine with me. read more

We ate here on our first night in Stockholm and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. We both choose prix fixe menus. Hubby had salmon and veal. I had Swedish roe and reindeer. The roe was amazing but the reindeer was very gamey. I loved the roe because it was a very clean and subtle tasting dish. My dessert was a berry crumble and hubby's was strawberries with ice cream. In the old part of Stockholm, which reminds me of old Montreal - cobblestone streets, lots of tourists. Touristy restaurants, lots of souvenir shops. This place tends to lean that way - but it has legit history. Getting to eat inside the original buildings from so long ago, is very cool - the restaurant is like a maze inside. We were down in the cellar area - very nice and quiet. The service was very polite, and the food was good. We both had the reindeer (we feel bad about it but we had to try an old skool meal). To me, this place is in the same genre as Clas på Hörnet, KB, and Ulla Winbladh. Someone explained to me that they had been serving food here since the 17th century. The architecture of this cave (it's all underground) is quite fun, like some organic 3D labyrinth. The service was very slow, but perhaps we hit the rush hour; they seemed to be working very hard. Visiting from SoCal, my wife and I were so looking forward to this, our final dinner after our 2 weeks in Sweden and Norway. Admittedly our expectations were high as we had heard such good things from several people who had eaten there. While the food was very good, it could never make up for the terrible service. Starting with our cocktails, several times throughout the meal we were simply forgotten by our waiter. We had to remind our waiter about the cocktails and then when our cocktails finally arrived our first course of the Meny Gamla Stan, each course paired with wine, arrived about 30 seconds later. We sent that back to the kitchen. Similarly, even though we were poured our wine for the main course, a delicious Argentinian Malbec, we had to remind another waiter (as we couldn't find ours) that we were still waiting for our main course. What a great find this was for us. We have had some very good meals whilst in Sweden, but this was by far the best. Started with elk carpaccio which was wonderful; served with a light horseradish sauce and apple compote, a brillant combination of flavors. Main course was grouse and again it was delicious.
