Every visit to the downtown farmers market and the Friday food truck gathering I am on the lookout for Dlish (and, let's be honest, probably stalked their Instagram account before leaving the house in anticipation of the deliciousness to come). They have a big frozen meats section, prepared foods (like dumplings, buns, eggrolls), snacks, fresh produce and herbs, sauces/seasonings, rice/noodles, and more. All of the workers here are very nice and will answer any questions you have. They do have some items for sale and it changes. You will see a nice handwritten sign by the on sale item. The portions are very generous, and the plates are super cute as they're shaped like boats. The interior is cozy, and the service was decent. Everyone was polite and helpful, although they could have been a little more attentive. We initially wanted to order the bangus, but unfortunately it wasn't available. The food itself is difficult for me to rate. I don't question its authenticity, especially given that this is a Filipino-owned restaurant. My family is Filipino as well, so I think this may simply come down to regional differences or the particular style of Filipino food we grew up eating. Unfortunately, the flavors here just weren't to our taste. A lot of the food was much oilier than we're accustomed to, such as the pancit and fried rice. The lumpia was also quite different from what our family is used to. We're accustomed to lumpia that is tightly rolled and packed with meat, with vegetables more as an accent. Here, the lumpia was much airier, with mostly vegetables and a smaller amount of meat. It is so different that we all collectively checked to see if we had accidentally bitten into the vegetable lumpia as we had gotten an order of those as well. It was also very oily similar to the pancit and fried rice. I actually love bitter melon and am very accustomed to its bitterness, but I found the bitter melon here overwhelmingly bitter. It was strong enough that I wondered whether it had been soaked beforehand, which is how we are used to preparing it before cooking to mellow out the bitterness. We were also really looking forward to the bistek, but again, the flavor profile wasn't what we expected. It was very vinegar-forward and lacked some of the depth and complexity that we're accustomed to in bistek. It was also drier than we preferred. I don't say any of this to talk down about the restaurant. I've seen plenty of reviews from people who really enjoy the food and say that it reminds them of home, and I think that's worth mentioning. That just wasn't the experience for my family. Although, of everything that we ate, our children did enjoy the chicken with no complaints. If you're familiar with Filipino food and looking for a particular flavor or regional style, just keep in mind that what they serve here may be different from what you're accustomed to. For some people, this may be exactly the Filipino food they've been looking for. It just wasn't quite what we were looking for.
