"If gas gets any higher, I'm cutting a hole through the floorboard and Flintstoning this bitch."…read more~@FillWerrell on Twitter During the daylight hours this is the best place in Santa Cruz to buy cheap gasoline. Valero is typically $.05 to .10 cheaper than the rest of the stations in town, and that's good when you're living on a budget. There's almost never a line and you have the Corner Store right there if you need road trip food like beef jerky, sunflower seeds, Pringles, and iced tea. You can also pick up firewood, windshield washer fluid and other assorted sundries as well. However at night this place becomes a hobo boxing ring. Maybe it's just me, but I've seen more than one fight between homeless people here. I'm thinking about selling tickets to watch the matches. It might go something like this: "Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the main event of the night, here at the Valero Gas Station in beautiful midtown Santa Cruz, California! Presiding over this match we have our fine Valero Boxing Association judges and the referee, who is also the cashier, John...(pause for applause) Now in the red corner weighing in at 142 pounds- 145 if he hasn't had a bath in a few weeks, with a professional record of 37 wins, 27 by way of biting off the other guy's nose and 5 loses the current Valero Station Champion, from Torrence, California but living in Tijuana Mexico, please welcome Armandooo 'Mondo' Garciaaaaaa (pause for applause), his opponent in the blue corner foaming at the mouth and weighing in at 143 pounds with a professional record of 45 wins, 38 knockouts and 3 loses, from Scotts Valley, California, please welcome 'Craaaaazy' Shaaaane Jeffersooooon! LET'S GET RRRRREADY TO RRRRUMBLE!" Needless to say the place is a little scary at night. Save yourself the trauma of possibly seeing a homeless man with his pants down and get your gas during the daylight hours. Just sayin'.

I ran inside, someone came out and stopped it. Then they told me to move to another pump to get gas. I made sure to ask them to cancel the charge of the spilled gas and they said YES. Which was a lie, they did charge me and the claim that it was my fault. I will obviously dispute the charge and file a hazard complaint.

Eventually some stubbly, tragically petite man comes breezing in and I think I can finally get my snacks checked out but when he realized he was the only one inside he rolled his eyes like a teenager and helped me out. Muttered something under his breath about how he's the boss and it's not his job to do this? Maybe hire more people then? Or make sure someone is at the front before you go and do God knows what outside? I asked him if he knew which way Henry Cowell state park was and he rolled his eyes AGAIN and told me to use Google Maps. He gave me my change, slammed the till a bit TOO aggressively and dipped into the cooler. Don't know what his deal was... Napoleon complex maybe? Just made me feel unwelcome and burdensome. Get it together FLOP!

I didn't go inside to pay, just paid at the pump with card, but overall it was a pretty standard gas experience, just considerably better priced. Not to mention, easy to get back on the highway. So I thought this was going to be the cheapest gas in the area. It is not. However, the prices are competitive, and it's near the 1. Compared to most gas stations this close (and convenient) to the highway, Sav-On Gas is a steal. Ocean Street also has quite a few restaurants and fast-food places, so if you can turn your quick stop for gas into a full refueling stop if you so choose. My pump was a bit slow, but it wasn't terrible. The man working here when I came was efficient, but he didn't say much.

However, a couple times in the…read morelast few weeks, I've purchased a $1 super lotto from a pre-filled slip, and a beverage, when a particular guy is working there. Brown short hair, clean shaven, kind of slim, maybe 5'10", in his 20s or 30s. Both times he said, with a totally straight face: $20 for the lotto (which was actually $1 if you recall), and then whatever the price of the drink was. And quickly doing the math in his head, he verbally added $19 dollars to the grand total without missing a beat. When I looked at the register seeing the real total (which of course was $19 less than what he said), he deadpanned "just kidding". He did this exact same thing to me two different times in the span of a couple weeks. Seems very sketchy. Benefit of the doubt: I suppose he really could've been "just kidding", but if so, not funny at all and pretty poor taste to be trying that joke on paying customers that you don't know. Especially if you have no comedic demeanor or delivery with it. Keep an eye on this guy.
