The fondue was good and I really enjoyed the combination of the creamy cheese with the different accompaniments--especially the fruit, which added a nice contrast. That said, it was good rather than mind-blowing. Service was great and our server was especially thoughtful with our friends' kid, bringing over a coloring book to keep them entertained. Such a sweet touch! We made a reservation by phone, which I'd recommend since the restaurant gets busy around dinner. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and very much what you want from a fondue restaurant. A nice place to experience Swiss fondue in Zurich, especially if you're looking for a cozy traditional setting.

Knowing that we'd be tired after a long flight but would also want to maximize our limited time in Zürich, I did a Yelp search for Swiss food by map location and found Borni's Baizli in Oerlikon. I made a reservation using the online request form on their website and received a confirmation right away. When it became apparent that our flight would arrive late and that our dinner would be delayed by an hour, I again messaged the restaurant via their website. When we finally showed up, the friendly manager asked if I was the guy with the delayed flight. He seated us right away, no problem, in a nice windowside table. The two of us ordered the fondue (28f) as well as a mixed salad (greens with small stacks of fresh and pickled carrots, cucumbers, beets, radishes) and the more straightforward (and terrific) green salad. The salads were very fresh - and also enormous, but we are rabbits who enjoy our veggies. The fondue was tasty and you definitely could taste and feel the liquor on your tongue. It was so good and warm, accompanied by a big basket of cubed bread. The waiter was so committed to our enjoyment, he suggested that we not eat our salads first as he thought the fondue was at its best when it first hits the table. So, a little fondue, a little salad, a little more cheese...it was a lovely, leisurely meal. We didn't finish all of our fondue. It's just a lot more cheese than we're used to, though the manager/cook let us know that he made it a little larger than usual as he thought we'd be particularly hungry after our flight. We seemed to be the only tourists in the place that evening as everyone else spoke German with the waiter. Anyway, he fared just fine in English and they've got a helpful English menu available as well. Also, almost everyone else in the restaurant ordered one of the cordon bleu plates. The chicken looked really terrific and was so crisp that I could hear the cutlets crunch when they were cut into. I can only imagine that the cheesy goodness on the inside was perfect. I wished we'd ordered one of those, too, but it would have just been way too much food for us. An easy 15-minute ride by bus or S tram, Oerlikon (roll the r!) is a good-sized and diverse neighborhood that's midway between the city center and the airport. There were surely no tourists around here, which we just love. Borni's is not in a quaint historic building and has no view of a pretty rushing river. But prices for fondue and wine here are also a good 20-30% cheaper than the visitor-focused restaurants that we were also considering. Borni's Baizli offers pleasant service, good food, a very fairly priced meal, and a chance to see where real people live in Zürich. I'd return for sure. And next time, I'd be ordering some of that crunchy chicken for myself!

You ain't seen nothing yet... the moment you approach this joint you're already impressed with its rustic "cabinesque" type exterior in an otherwise concrete city. Once you walk inside you're invaded by a delightful scent of cheese. The rustic interior with its wooden tables, a center fire place, and game heads and fur everywhere instantly tells you you're in the right place. You're then greeted by nice servers and a welcoming vibe. The rest? Awesome! Fantastic experience! Great food, a local Swiss beer and an awesome dessert to cap things off. It is basically a mix of melted cheese and wine served with stale bread cubes and potatoes. No offense to those who enjoy and like eating fondue. The restaurant is located in a very touristy area and we had to make reservations. The staff was super friendly and attentive. We paid around $80USD for the fondue. Definitely not worth it. Again, it is one of the dishes that you must try at least once when in Switzerland.

Walliser Keller is a great place to experience local cuisine including fondue. After we arrived we realized there were more choices then just fondue. We ended up ordering 3 fondues and 3 raclette. We ordered the house, mushroom and spiced fondue, very good. Mushroom was the newest flavor for the family. We will probably try to do it at home. You can think of the difference between fondue and raclette as fondue is melted before it comes to the table and raclette is melted at the table. We liked both because they are social meals that take time to eat and allow us to talk. (My children are all teenagers and tend to eat first then maybe talk.) This provided everyone an opportunity to talk about their day and what they wanted to do later. The server was very helpful explaining how to melt the raclette and how the mini potatoes and pickled vegetables accompanied the raclette. We even learned that superstition says are not supposed to drink water with raclette, our usual drink. However, that is an old superstition that has to do with cheese forming a ball in water that could block your digestion. My son and I did not want that to happen an order the house beer, one dark and one light, very good. The ladies risked water, as it was warm for May. We all agreed if we wanted another fondue meal, we woudl come back. Good quality for the price.

We ordered the fondue mit schwarzem trüffel (44.50 CHF) and the geröstete pouletwürfel (18.50 CHF). The black truffle fondue was creamy and I liked the truffle flavor. The chunks of beef were tender and I liked dipping them in the fondue. The menu says that you must order one dish per person but the fondue and one side were enough. We saw a really long line for the restaurant and we skipped it because we had a reservation. I'd recommend making one so you can avoid the wait.

We went with the beef served with gnocchi pasta, and it did not disappoint: the beef was incredibly tender and coated in a rich, delicious sauce. We started off with the onion soup topped with puff pastry and an order of escargot. Both dishes were well-made and tasty, though to be completely fair, we'll probably save our high expectations for traditional French onion soup and snails for our upcoming stop in Lyon. And if locals are there it is always a good sign. The Wiener schnitzel was truly amazing! It was lightly hand breaded and was so tender we could cut it with a fork easily. The people-watching aspect is what makes this spot, clutch. The street this bar/resto is on, is filled with stores and places to eat, ergo, tons of people walkin on by.
