It wasn't fancy and you couldn't just pick "calamari and chips" or "Flounder and Scallops". You ordered per person, and your basket was filled with whatever the fishing boats caught. Could be sardines, could be flake, could be squid, octopus... it was unbelievably fresh and the building was an anachronism standing at the waters edge of rustic down home charm and good, fresh seafood. That's how it WAS. they've renovated, and in 2024 chic, it looks and feels like a drab, sterile cafeteria. You no longer order based on what's caught, nothing is as fresh as it was and the staff are dismissive to the point of being rude. It's filled with fake ocean props and displays that seem totally at odds with the new modern stylings. Prices have gone up, serving size has gone down and what was a quaint gem hidden on the way to Port Arthur has now Been gentrified in the most disappointing way possible. I wouldn't recommend it on its own, unless you happen to be passing through anyway.

Definitely a spot to stop on the way back from Port Arthur. Very fresh fish. So fresh you see the…read moreboat arrive at the shop and unload the fish, the fisherman gutting and scaling the fish in the shop, a woman batters the fish and cooks it while a young girl serves the customers. The process was a little slow and the only choice on the day was a seafood basket with chips. The fish was running out as the workers yelled to one another "We are out of flake and trevally and now only flathead" Working in a kitchen before I know the oil needs changing when a lot of food is cooked. It could have been changed. However the experience was worthwhile and a bit of a step back in time.

The Hope and Anchor bills itself as the oldest licensed pub in Australia. It was located just…read morearound the corner from our Downtown Hobart Hotel, and was our first meal after landing in Australia (19 hour time difference). Fish and Chips and a local beer were on tap for our meal, and it was all very good. We ordered and paid for our meal at the bar, and enjoyed our time at a high table by the window. We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

Here's what we noticed: - It was a Monday night and we came in around 6:30 PM, and the place was already packed. We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.
