Who knew Baltimore even has a Science Fiction Society? And that it's been around more than fifty…read moreyears? This club is amazingly cool, at least for those who may view cool through a pair of 3-D glasses. Their clubhouse is a reader's delight, stocked floor to ceiling with books and manga. It used to be a movie theater, and they have occasional movie nights making it a perfect meeting spot for Dr. Who fans, anime enthusiasts and geeks of every stripe. And now that pop culture is mainstream, that includes just about everybody. Once a year BSFS hosts Balticon, the Baltimore Science Fiction and Fantasy convention, a precursor of today's mega-comicons. They bring together readers and writers, artists and vendors, cosplayers and fans of every stripe and it is a truly amazing scene. BSFS is also a tax-free charity, working with several literary organizations to provide books to underprivileged children among other things, so teenagers who need to fulfill their community service requirements can do so by volunteering at a science fiction convention.

The Baltimore Science Fiction Society exists to promote the creation and appreciation of science fiction and fantasy cultural arts. Primarily through literary art forms, but also embracing the many related graphical, musical, and theatrical creations inspired by SF. Do you remember a time when "figure study" meant something besides analyzing a budget report? For all of us Fine Arts majors who ended up as corporate ladder climbing cube-slaves, there is hope for us (if you're an arts major that didn't give up your dreams and are actually in an art related field - you can come too...just don't sit too close to me, or I may stab you with my #5 pencil) in the form of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in Baltimore! It's not really an art school (hence the "anti-art school" in the title), it's more like a monthly drink and draw social club with live models in amazing costumes (OK, generally burlesque-esque costumes...over 21 only please), where for 4 hours, you can sketch away and remember a time when "carpel tunnel" was a disease you got from..."other" activities, not from creating 457 page Board Reports. Only $8 admission, and held at the Wind-Up Space in Baltimore, there are drink specials, fellow artist wannabes (and actual real-live breathing artists) to mingle and socialize with. All you need is to dig out that dusty sketchpad that your cat has been using as a scratching post, and a few pens and pencils (which you can happily "liberate" from your office supply cabinet) and transport yourself back to a time when creating beauty didn't involve powerpoint presentations.

This dude was so instantly nasty to me, dismissive, condescending, just awful. I literally don't even know what I did wrong but try and buy a stack of books and try to get a discount cos I was buying a whole stack! Never ever before met a rude person here in the twenty years I've been coming (since before ravens stadium was built and they were across the street). I've bought thousands of dollars worth of appliances here (2 $500 stoves, a $1000 fridge, two dishwashers, and two washers and dryers), not to mention hundreds upon hundreds worth of lumber, trim, windows, doors, miscellaneous hardware, etc. I bought 400 dollars worth of upholstery cloth one time alone. I come in, I don't mess around, I know what I need and I am a friendly nice customer. (Because they use your phone number when you buy, also? they should be able to SEE this). I was buying BOOKS. Books are not their main business (and to be honest their prices are so out of scale it's crazy compared to thrifts--10 dollars each for a used hard over cover book from the 80s? I think there was one vintage item or two--I collect golden book kids encyclopedias) In the past they've basically tried to GIVE me books I wanted to buy! I wasn't buying anything from the "special glass cases. I asked Josh what they could do for me on these 20 books that I promise no one wants. (I promise). I picked up so many cos I have always been given a little break on stuff here! It's literally the way I thought they do business!!!! Nope. Not a single red cent. Off ANY book EXCEPT one they wanted 20 dollars for that didn't cost 20 new! (No it was not old or vintage!) I had 100 bucks of books in my cart he couldn't do 80? He wouldn't even discuss it and when I was frankly totally taken aback by this since it's so counter to EVERY EXPERIENCE IVE HAD THERE FOR OVER 20 YEARS--he threatened to call security on me!? For trying to bargain?????? These were all crap books. I want them for myself and to show my husband AND I make art from them. I'd have paid literally 10 for every set of four of these books at thrift. They wanted 10 and 15 dollars EACH. It wasn't just he wouldn't deal at all on price. He treated me like a criminal for no reason at all. He had his hand on his walkie talkie and when I kind of laughed just thinking he was driving a bargain he said he was going to call security on me!!!! He did this because I had the temerity to say "come on, not any discount at all? I'm buying in bulk!" And I mentioned I've never had them not come down on price on anything ever! I am a short, friendly 53 year old mom. fyi. What the living heck is going on with this place? It was SUCH an unpleasant and weird experience. I feel horrible. I will take my business to loading dock.
