But since it's in a Yelp category, I have to put my two cents in!…read more Being a native of Poolesville, something I don't care to admit despite it being listed as my hometown on my Yelp profile, is far from civilization and DC, but also far from a bad place to live.. or at least grow up. My graduating class had a total of 84 people, and 75% of them were classmates since Kindergarten. It's nice to have that long time bond, but at the same time, everybody knows everything. Major crimes are basically non-existent so it's a nice place to raise a family. However, it's mainly a residential community with the usual selection of townhomes and single family houses. There are no condos or apartments. There is a long time family run grocery store named Selby's, a couple banks, a McDonald's, a carry out pizza place, a CVS, Chinese carry out, and a few other businesses to keep you happy. Poolesville is not a shopping destination at all, but the cool thing about what is there is that most of the businesses are locally owned, so no major commercialism. One unique thing about Poolesville is White's Ferry. It's about 6 miles west of town and the only vehicle ferry running on the Potomac taking you from MD to VA (Leesburg) in about 5-10mins. There's a lot of history in Poolesville, so it's worth a day trip up there on a weekend day. In October the famous (or not) haunted woods is open to the public near the town. All in all, I turned out ok, but I wouldn't want to commute every day from Poolesville to anywhere! But do check it out sometime, it's a country get away from the metro area.

Sheridan Circle is yet another circle park. It's surrounded by a relatively quieter street. There's…read moremuch busier traffic circles than this. A good thing about that is it's easier to get inside. You can see a very cool statue. It may not be that exciting, but it's nice coming for a look if you're around. One interesting thing about the area are all the embassies. That may be reason enough to come this way. Inside the circle is a small grassy area. There's an impressive statue of General Philip Sheridan. He was a Civil War hero. There's some inscriptions on the base you can read. It seems interesting enough to give it a look if you're in the area. It's not the only memorial in the circle. There's also a tribute to Chilean diplomats killed in an attack here.

Some of the signage needs refreshing/re-etching, especially the ones at the mercy of foot traffic. In the warmer months, the fountains are on to elevate the experience and appeal. There are plenty of benches and seating, which does attract vagrants and unhoused folks. It's also a bit quieter than the bustle of M Street NW. Regardless, don't miss out on an opportunity to learn a little bit of history or have a lunch outdoors from one of the many neighboring restaurants and cafes.

Starting at the entrance near Bluejacket, walk by artifacts like old gas pumps and airplane wheels reading the signs to understand the evolution of transportation from hundreds of years ago to highways. Along the way are tables to enjoy lunch from one of the many nearby spots (Yellow The Cafe is recommended!). If you go with younger kids, take them to the splash area in the nearby award-winning Yards Park.

Now that things are opening up we thought an impromptu road trip might be in order. Not so fast, while hotels are relatively plentiful (and reasonably priced) the newly implemented timed ticket system used to control the post-pandemic crowds at most of the major museums and must see attractions (Smithsonian, National Archives etc.) are bring scarfed up by the locals leaving nothing to speak of for the tourism trade. Multiple websites report no availability until November at the earliest. Oh well, so much for spontaneous travel, as I suspect we'll point our car in another direction. Normally, DC is one of the most attractive destinations along the Northeast Corridor as most major landmarks are free to the public. For the balance of 2021 they might have been smarter attaching a nominal fee to the tix ($5-$10) in order to prevent the hoarding and stockpiling apparently now in evidence. See you in 2022. We found this guide to be extremely useful since it had the most up to date information on the museums, monuments, tours, hotels and events . Definitely send away for it. Equinox was catering the event! Yes! I saw Todd Grey running food out from the kitchen. I am not going to write a long winded review of the food, but the pastry chef's macarons are the best I've ever had! The venue is a great place to hold events. It is elegant and has great architectural details. State names (including the District of Columbia) are engraved in the wooden beams above. It's a great location too - right behind the White House.
