Center building with burning smell of cigarettes and mold

So incredibly run down and unsanitary, people smoking indoors with birds and mold growing on old pans next to bird cages. All birds are fed seed mix (very inappropriate diet for any parrot much less a macaw or even eclectus). Some of the reptiles have inadequate lights and cobwebs in their cages. Can't believe people would board their birds here too! If your bird is boarded it gets seed mix and maybe two perches if it's lucky, forget about toys or a clean cage. Most birds aren't even adopted out, volunteers end up spending most their time cleaning after birds that are payed to be boarded there. Seems more like hoarding and roadside zoo than a rescue, for example there is a beautiful and gentle hyacinth macaw that could be easily adopted out, but the owner would rather let her rot in a dirty cage with no toys and seed mix just so he can say he owns a hyacinth macaw. They have maybe 2-3 outdoor cages that look up to standard that all the pics they use on the website are from, the rest are in rusting dirty cages and the large "aviaries" they brag about are sheds with no enrichment.

We adopted a bird and the care and attention to find good homes for the rescues was impressive!

I volunteer here and I love it! Playing with the birds and giving just a few hours of my life up is the least I can do.

I'm mainly reviewing bc the two one star reviews are from one person who got turned down for…read moreadoption bc they wanted to cut a cats knuckles off (declawing) and the other bc someone missed their appointment for volunteer orientation. Think of the animals instead of yourselves. Rescue is unforgiving and hard and these are petty reasons to leave a bad review for an animal rescue. That said, this is a no kill shelter! Go and see if your soul pet is there waiting for you.

I need to start out by saying the staff here are very pleasant and courteous. Taking time to…read morediscuss many things. However, I am so sad to even write this. I went to the Augusta Humane Society on Monday to adopt two older cats. When we came there we saw several cats outside and inside running around and just being cats/kittens. My heart was ready to adopt. Now it smelled like animals/stinky and I could tell that they had a very small budget, so please donate to this place. As we talked to the very friendly lady we realized that we were not "eligible" to adopt the older cats. The primary reason was our intentions were to declaw them in the front. The lady told me to "do the research" on declawing kittens/cats. She told me several times that not only did the Vet at the Humane Society not approve in declawing but one other local vet did not either. We were also told that other states like Maryland had laws that it was illegal. She also said it was illegal in many places overseas. So I did the research. The reason this against declawing even came up was from the Big Cats. Meaning, declawing exotic or native wild cat species. I did my research and found out Georgia HAS NO LAWS about this and this woman and her vet did not want to let anyone adopt these poor animals if they thought you would declaw. I have had cats who lived INSIDE the house for 21 years and they were declawed. Yes, I am saddened that this place have placed their own "opinions" over the needs of the animals. Too many animals need a loving home and sadly again, depending on the vets opinion, not Georgia legal laws, many will not ever find a home. Sad, sad, sad.

This shelter is one of the worst when it comes to honesty, communication, and compassion toward…read moreboth animals and owners. My situation involved my dog being seized after running at large and biting someone. I will fully admit that my dog was aggressive toward people he didn't know because of trauma from his previous home. As heartbreaking as it was, my family eventually made the difficult decision to euthanize him. What made this situation unbearable was the way the shelter handled it. After multiple phone calls with staff and supervisor Dani, we were clearly told that we could come Saturday to sign the papers, euthanize him, and pick him up afterward. Because he was deeply loved, we visited him several times beforehand. The day before our scheduled date, we came to see him again, discuss giving him a last meal, and sign any paperwork they needed. Instead, we were informed they had already euthanized him without notifying us -- after specifically telling us Saturday was the agreed date. Their excuse was "miscommunication." One explanation was that because my sister visited him Thursday, they assumed it was okay to proceed. Another excuse was that a supervisor approved it because he was considered "a danger." Yet when we directly asked if he was a danger to staff, we were told no, and that they "deal with stuff like this all the time." Even while visiting him, I personally watched staff interact with him physically, and he responded calmly and familiarly with them. The entire situation was handled with a complete lack of professionalism, compassion, and communication. It honestly feels like they knew they could get away with handling things this way because of the circumstances surrounding my dog. No matter the situation, owners deserve honesty, communication, and the chance to properly say goodbye to an animal they loved.
