A s a fire buff, I usually get pretty good responses from FDNY firehouses when I visit them and often have bought T shirts and caps as well as often having my picture taken with one of the rigs...In this case, I was really curious because I used to live across the street and back aways from this house, and from the tenth floor, looked down on what I knew as Hook and Ladder 3 Water Tower 2 doing their training in the street ( this is back before gentrification and the street was dead on a. summer evening in particular, almost no traffic ever. They were also in our building in their role as firemen --there were any number of fire incidents there while I lived there ( a long time). But when I asked the firemen now about the history of the place, they said they knew nothing and gave me a number to call, (they just seemed to want to get rid of me fast) which was a grouchy bureaucratic type who told me to go to Randalls Island and some library there. Then instead of " Hook and Ladder 3 etc" I just googled up Ladder 3 and found out all about the famous Capt Paddy Brown and September 11...I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, it isn't very welcoming to the public. read more
