Bernadett and Richard have worked as pastry chefs in some pretty swanky places in London and it really shows in the quality of their product (i consider myself a bit of a foodie). One of the few things i found good about being dragged round wedding fairs for months was the guaranteed cake tastings available there; there were some incredible looking cakes that i saw but as soon as my wife and I went to Bernadett's studio, attached to her house, and picked up the first of several slices of cake i knew we would be ordering from them (the fact that they have made hundreds, if not thousands, of cakes over the years compared to a large number of those who have started in this business from being a hobby really did show). As my wife's family were all flying in from Germany we hired our venue for four days and then booked them into nearby hotels afterwards to make a fully week of it, consequently we decided to order a cake that would feed double the number of guests actually there on the wedding day (to ensure that we had tea and cake available in the following week). Bernadett made us a four tier buttercream cake in the German style; much less sweet than a British (actually French patisserie) style cake so there was much less guilt at scoffing it for days afterwards. We had chocolate orange, lemon, vanilla with strawberry and coffee and walnut as the tiers, all were amazingly moist, incredibly tasty and the cake was good for the whole week that it lasted. Having previously looked on the website and seen that they had won a national award for the North East's best wedding cake designer the previous year and were nominated this year (which they now appear to have won again), i was a little scared about the price but pleasantly surprised when it came in at the same as the other people that we had spoken with. Organising our wedding was incredibly stressful at times and the main reason, apart from the product being so good, that i am writing this review is that Dreamworld cakes were hands down the most professional and easy people we dealt with out of any of our suppliers; all communication was promptly and clearly answered and any follow ups from their end, e.g. confirmation of flavours, occurred exactly when we were told it would be (there was NO chasing at any point from our end). Bernadett was the first person on site on the wedding day, even prior to the venue staff, not leaving until full verbal and written instructions had been given, including when to bring the cake out from the chilled room (to ensure the buttercream came to the best temperature for flavour) and when to add the fruit decoration (to ensure it did not start macerating and then leaking juice on the cake);. If all our suppliers to our wedding had been like this it would have been much less stressful and a breeze to organise. NB they also did really reasonably priced and cute wedding favours but we had already organised others so did not order them. The positives: * Incredible product - it really was an amazing tasting cake (by far the best out of many we tried) * Very professional to deal with no having to chase them at any stage * Really good value when i compare the end product with the other numerous tastings we did (and we did a lot of them due to the high number of cake makers at wedding fairs) The negatives: * The website is really pretty and easy to navigate but for the fact that it has extremely low contrast, i have good eyesight and i find it hard to read the text (it should be an easy fix though and doesn't effect the taste) * It is months until my birthday and i cannot find an excuse to order another cake yet!

I've been meaning to visit Lickety Split on several visits to Durham but never made it until now. I…read morewas slightly reticent as a few days before, I had visited Durham's cake shop/takeaway Sweet Tooth and was left disappointed. Sweet Tooth had rave reviews so I was naturally furious not to be thrilled with my visit. This put Lickety Split on a back foot. Clearly, I can't trust people from my native North East. Clearly, their opinion doesn't count for shit. Anyway, after a drive to the coast following a lunch of my mum's homemade cheese savoury, we parked up and had a walk to Lickety Split. It's a really good location - right on the road opposite the coastline. I love the coast and it's were I am happiest. However, the Seaham beach is down a billion steps which invariably means to go there means to walk all the way back up. The shop it's self is decked out, 50s diner style. It's quirky and cute and for the back swamp of County Durham it's a decent effort. Admittedly, I've been to places with a little more detail to the decor but is certainly a change from the norm up there. There was a sign saying we had to be served before we sat down but it wasn't busy so we sat down anyway. The table wasn't clean - not dirty, but the previous patron's plates and cups were still strewn across the table. Myself and my sister are former waitresses from the family business and clearing tables is somewhat of a disease. We piled up the plates and ditched them at the end of the table before grabbing a menu. There is an extensive amount of stuff on the menu. I thought it would just be ice cream but there are waffles, hot dogs and other stuff. Looking at other tables, the hot dogs looked massive and good quality - definitely not out of a tin. I was regretting the cheese savoury. You have to order at the till so I went up and ordered a banana split. The cashier said the desserts would be brought over and she came over straight away to clear the table. The banana split was BIGGER THAN MY HEAD. Huge banana, real fresh cream and the chocolate sauce was real chocolate. None of this squeezy tube rubbish - ACTUAL, PROPER CHOCOLATE. I was really impressed. And I felt bad that I had judged Lickety's by the poor standards of Sweet Tooth. My sister polished off her tasty minty dessert thing. I wanted to try it but I knew if I were to tackle this banana split, every spoonful was to be taken seriously. Nevertheless, it was my Everest. I just couldn't finish it and I admitted defeat with the grace of a seasoned athlete. And also because take away customers kept walking in and leaving the door open and it was bitter outside. Not quite ice cream weather, in truth. So if you are going to Seaham, avoid the stairs and grab and ice cream....but maybe take your jacket.
