FRESH fish for sushi.
Jessica F.

Absolutely amazing place. Tess was my server and she knew everything and anything there is to know about the items on this menu. I started chatting with the sushi chef who turned out to be the owner! He noticed my interest when I started asking questions and showed me all of their fresh product! If it's not fresh, they don't serve it and I LOVE that. I recommend them, I will absolutely be back, regularly.

I hate that it's taken almost two weeks for me to get to this review. My wife and I, and our friends the Rosses, were on the Coast for a long weekend to celebrate my birthday. We normally do Sushi on Friday evenings, and wanted to try dining in at Fatsumo. Laurie and I had partaken of their take-out menu before, and loved it, but we wanted to go sit and enjoy. First of all, the trip was worth the effort. This restaurant is small, only a few tables and the sushi bar. Still, due to the kindness of a young couple who offered their four-top in exchange for a vacant two-top, we got a table; we sent them an order of edamame. The menu is pretty straight forward; appetizers, rolls, a nice selection of Nigiri/Sashimi, and a few non-sushi items. We started out with the miso soup and salad, and then the Fatsumo Tataki. The soup and salad were great, but the tataki was a gift from the gods. The tuna was seared just a bit more heavily than we're used to, but that little bit made it perfectly textured. Served over a slightly tart bed of julienned vegetables, it was nothing less than wonderful. We selected our entrees from their assorted rolls; they divide them up into Lightweight, Middleweight, and Grand Champion rolls, and give you the option to combine half-rolls of them all. I took a half-Pebble Beach Roll (Tempura whitefish and sweet onion, topped with baked scallops and Asian remoulade, accented with a lime cilantro sour cream) and half-Fatsumo Roll (Tempura shrimp, masago, pressed crunchies and togarashi, topped with spicy tuna, shredded krabstick and Asian remoulade) - both GC rolls. Laurie had a pair of lightweight rolls, and our friends had a similar selection. All of these were well prepared, and tasty. This little restaurant has a great atmosphere, and a local ambiance. The food is made with top-quality ingredients, and the chef/proprietor is available right behind the sushi bar; he is happy to offer suggestions. We all loved this place, and plan to return the next time we visit the Pass.

Spicy Tuna Roll and Chef's Choice Nigiri

Everything we ordered was delicious but this Chef's Choice Nigiri was AMAZING. So fresh, perfectly cut, rice was perfection, and the spicy tuna roll was tender, meaty, and just the right amount of heat. Well done.

House ginger salad is always fresh, just the right amount of dressing; not dry salad or swimming in dressing like most places these days. A definite go to with options to please everyone.

Overall, Koi Sushi delivered a good dining experience with a few standout dishes and a couple of…read morequirks. We started with the edamame, which was a touch salty but still tasty. For sushi, we tried the Kimberly Roll and the Cao Roll, and both were excellent--easily the highlight of the meal. The Kimberly Roll, with its slight jalapeño kick on top, is a must-try for anyone who enjoys a little heat. The chicken and steak fried rice was another winner--flavorful and served in a very generous portion. The chicken katsu, breaded in panko, was good as well, but the sauce on the side was served cold. Our server mentioned that only their teriyaki sauce is served hot, which felt odd given that the dish itself comes out hot. In our humble opinion, heating up the sauces would make a big difference. Service was a B: a bit slow and not particularly warm, though not unfriendly. The ambiance matched what you'd expect from a hibachi-style restaurant--lively with the occasional flash of hibachi flames across the way, which adds some fun energy to the room. Bottom Line: Koi Sushi offers some great sushi and hearty portions, with the Kimberly Roll stealing the show. Service could be sharper and those cold sauces need attention, but if you're in Gulfport and craving sushi, it's worth a visit.

Another big back review here. Let me start by saying this is hands down the best sushi on the…read morecoast. Don't try to argue with me unless you have eaten at almost every sushi restaurant around the coast like I have. The freshest ingredients and perfectly prepared rolls around. We will start with it's the burning roll. Two kinds of tuna and absolutely stunning flavors. Then to the volcano, pieces were pretty big size but the flavor of the ingredients worked so well together, topped with salmon, tuna and avocado. Man is was 100/10. The filet mignon roll, came out with the thin sliced steak still hot. So good we ordered 2 along with the burning roll 2 were ordered. Of course we had the gyoza, fried rice and egg drop soup all came out fresh or very well made. The best part was the server I believe his name was Michael very helpful, and attentive to the restaurant needs and everybody in there. I'm closing I will say I was a see wee roll person 2 or 3 times a month and they just lost a customer to Mizu.

It's just that the whole place seems neglected. For starters, the outside is dark and there was high unkept grass and some trash in the parking lot. The whole entrance needs some kind of makeover because it is not inviting. I found myself carefully looking around while going back to my car because of the dark woods behind the building. Inside isn't much better. It was stuffy and the menus were sticky and falling apart. They also have those kind of cheap booths where you can feel every movement of the person behind you. People tend to flop into them and can literally knock the food off your fork if you're mid-bite. My wife and I shared some crab rangoons, which were quite large and had a nice crunch plus a decent amount of filling. They just came late when they should have been an appetizer. I had the chicken and shrimp hibachi which was great and I brought about 1/3 of it home. You get plenty of meat and veggies with it for twenty bucks. My wife had just the chicken hibachi which was five dollars less. We both got eggdrop soup and it is always good. We also ordered a sushi roll and they have a couple dozen specialties that are very good. They make fat rolls covered with toppings and really know what they are doing. Ours had shrimp, crawfish, and spicy tuna for about fifteen dollars, which is pretty normal pricing. I like the food here but they really could make more of an effort. Our server was overwhelmed and we still tipped well despite some mistakes. It baffles me that they have no social media presence besides some pages that haven't been updated since the Obama administration.
