During the Isle of Wight portion of my trip I had stopped into a yacht chandlery--really, more like a general store--in Yarmouth; the only problem was that up to now I couldn't put my finger on the store's name. Thanks to my trusty receipt, I found that Harwoods has a web site: www.harwoods-yacht-chandlers.co.uk. As advertised, Harwoods offers anything one could need, on land or sea. Along with an array of fishing gear, sailing gear, and outboards, the store offers goods for those with decidedly less seafaring on the agenda. I ended up with a true navy quilted vest and had my eye on the Saint James nautical striped t-shirts; sadly, the style I wanted wasn't available in my size. The housewares selection is comprehensive as well; my mom ended up with a collapsible (easy packing!) rubber trivet in purple. We were allowed to browse unimpeded and could happily have whiled away an afternoon here. Harwoods is definitely worth a look, even for landlubbers.

There is a butchers stall selling local meat, a second hand book stall, walking boots and socks, waterproofs and a good wine stall selling locally produced non-alcoholic wines. It is quite a mish mash of tat and local quality goods. Worth a look around. There is no access by car.

Good stalls include a fabulous fresh fish stall near the church, very cheap greeting cards, a guy selling old silver including cutlery which is all lovingly polished, two good olive stalls, fresh flowers, reasonably priced plants, meat, lovely fruit and vegetables, numerous clothing stalls, local new forest produce and soaps, etc. It can be very busy if the weather is good so be prepared to be jostled!
