Advertising has its place. I'm always dubious of posts that I see from so-called influencers on social media. Especially when I view someone with 20 sets of false eyelashes and enough food for ten delivered to the table and lots of oohs and ahhs. But I'm always willing to check out a new place and make my own decision because it's a fun hobby of mine. And I'm retired and I have plenty of time. Now I've been traveling in Mexico for most of my life because of family and friends that I have there, and I have a real soft spot for the cuisine of Mexico, whether from the seven regions that culinary historians talk about; or the sub regions such as our beloved Tex-Mex, which I love. And so today brings me to this little place up on Airline Drive that I heard about from a so-called influencer on Instagram. Los Mendoza Mexican Restaurant. I'm here in the morning and it's a breakfast all day option kind of place. I get a fruit smoothie (Ilusión) and a tecolota, their riff on a chilaquiles sandwich. The smoothie is excellent and I would come back just for it. They offer an option with or without sugar. A no charge, courtesy consommé with potatoes and fideo arrives. Delicious. As was the excellent sandwich. See photos. Beef birria ramen; tacos ahogados; caldo de albondigas; patitas de puerco en salsa roja; beef short ribs... how is it that I am just discovering this place? I love, cruising down Airline, Irvington, and Fulton, as there are so many places to choose from a Mexican culinary heritage. I want to spend a year, just trying all of the different places.

En resumen el área lo dice todo.

One day, I was craving iced coffee, and Kathy made me a custom, off-menu iced coffee that's now my go-to every time I visit. It's perfect! My partner and I started coming here while our kitchen was being remodeled, but it quickly became a favorite that we continue to visit even now that our kitchen is finished. The service is fantastic--attentive, friendly, and thoughtful. The food is always fresh and delicious. Thank you, Katia, for your kindness and for making this place so special. ¡Gracias!

The same meats are offered for all of them, so you basically get to choose your variation of carb :D Didn't realize they had a Taco Tuesday special (specifically the taco trompo is $1 each instead of $2), which wasn't mentioned anywhere in store, until I got the receipt. Only bottled water and drinks available :( Tacos only come with onions and cilantro. If you want cheese or sour cream, it's an extra charge for each. They do have house creamy green and spicy red sauces, but they didn't bring it to our table until I was done with half my tacos. Tacos come with 2 small corn tortillas: - Barbacoa (4.5/5): tender, flavorful -- this one was my favorite. - Chorizo (4/5): nicely cooked, flavorful, but very salty - Lengua (1/5): crunchy and hard, flavorless. More texture than anything. - Tripa (1/5): also not seasoned and not flavorful. Meat wasn't tender either. - Nopales (4/5): cactus grilled tender, wasn't seasoned so it didn't have too much flavor. But it came with grilled jalapeño and onions which were yummy. - Sopes (3/5): my first time having a sopes so not sure how it's supposed to taste like, but the base is made of masa flour and felt like a dense, pasty waffle. It was a on the soggy side and couldn't be picked up. This one came with cheese and sour cream but didn't have much flavor even with the chicken, so we still doused it with the sauces. Didn't see any beans on there. Nice to try but probably wouldn't order again. The service was not unfriendly but poker-faced and to the point. When I asked how the cactus tasted, the staff member could not tell me if it was salty or sweet (fyi, it's a savory dish). The ladies' restroom also had no toilet paper (not even a finished roll). But the tables and overall eating environment was clean and bright. Overall, an okay meal without frills. I would compare it to a food truck but in a nicer environment + nice parking lot. The Lengua and Tripa let me down, but I would return for their Barbacoa!

This is one of those places that Anthony Bourdain would've loved. I mean my God how do you make food this good? The daughter of the owner was so nice. It was simply the best person that I've ever had. I can't put my finger on it, but it's some sort of different style or different ingredients because it's different from any other person that I've ever had but it's one of my favorites. The chips and salsa with three different sauces were simply amazing. Oh my God like how does food get this good. The breakfast taco with potato and bacon was great.
