She laughs and says, in English, "Google translate! Do you want 400 mg or 200 mg?" I pick the 400 mg because it's half of what my prescription is for back in the US (I watch too many locked up abroad shows and was afraid to bring it on the plane, lest it be illegal or something in one of the countries I am stopping at during my trip.) She also asked me if 12 tablets would be enough and I said it was. Total cost for 12 (400mg) ibuprofen - €9.10 ($10.49)! In the US 200 (200mg) ibuprofen tablets are €3.49 ($3.99) at Target. I have no idea if this is a normal price for Italy or if this is price gouging because it's a tourist area, but yikes! Pack meds and worry about potential jail time later if this is the kind of markup on common medication.

During my stay in Rome, I had the very unfortunate experience of fracturing my foot ( first day of arrival) and needed to get medical assistance nearby considering I could not walk. Friend stopped in search of an ankle brace and cane for me... although the staff in the pharmacy did not speak English, I think they were clearly able to understand what my friend went in for. We saw several of these pharmacies throughout Rome, and I assumed they were all part of some kind of chain or nationalized system. I guess the signage is standardized, distinctive and green, so the pharmacies are easy to identify. They are otherwise independently operated places of business. This Farmacia had a vast, highly visible selection of condoms. I had to ask for help to find the nail clippers, which were in a less obvious location. The woman working the pharmacy was polite and pointed me in the right direction. I clipped my toenails as soon as I got back to the hotel. €4 very well spent. Hit up this pharmacy if you're in this part of town, in need of grooming tools, prophylactics, etc.
