Farm Lot 59 is the perfect morning adventure. Located in Signal Hill where you can take a nice stroll around the property and participate in their various events. We did some flower picking and the staff was so enthusiastic and helpful by providing us with shears and a bucket to collect our findings. They also de-thorned our roses so we didn't get pricked. ***This Review is for the Brunch May 17th 2015, Sunday*** On a beautiful, albeit, overcast day, lover took me on a nice brunch. However, everything was a surprise since he wanted this to be part of my birthday present. The only hint he gave me about this event was it was going to be outdoors, I'll need shoes, and a camera. So on we went and I still had no idea where we were going. The only clue I had to go off of, was the extremely industrial setting: oil rigs, old dilapidated buildings, concrete dump site... Cemetery! EEK! I thought it was a pass through town until he turned into one of the small streets, got out of the car, and told me to wait in the car. 1 minute went by...2 ok where is he?...3 Ok he'll be back, he didn't leave you..4 omg is he going to leave me here?...5 Panic...until I saw him walk back to the car. *whew He had parked somewhere else and made a u-turn into a dirt graveled lot. We squeezed through a gated fence, passed a "closed" little produce shack, and headed towards the back where I saw people standing around rows of fresh growing plants. I thought to myself, "omg...is this what I think it is?" I see tables all nicely set up, a couple of people = I won't be kidnapped or killed. We parked in a dirt graveled "lot" with no markings indicating parking spots or otherwise. We walked through a fence and was greeted by a couple of rows of growing vegetables and beyond that, some tables set up for a nice brunch. Upon walking around the entire Lot, they have vegetables such as squash, herbs, arugula, lettuce, and some other greens. There's a ton of chickens of all types providing fresh organic eggs, there was a band set up, and some heating elements for the chef to cook with. Already I was loving the atmosphere and the concept of the brunch. Who doesn't love fresh organic vegetables, fresh picked so that the chef from Restauration can cook you a good meal? Not only that, but Live music playing while you enjoy your meal! Then what can be better when the food turns out to be the most amazing, mind blowing, meal you've had in a while? The people involved in this like Sasha and Eric Simmons are starting a revolution of ways to get people more involved with what goes on their plate. Be very careful about ordering from this business. They have posted pick up times, and your advance purchases will be given to someone else if you miss that window. My only experiences with them are with being yelled at by a farm worker while on a hike (I'm guessing they were having a bad day) and missing my pickup window for a farm box; only told that it was subsequently donated into oblivion. I'm hoping to update the review from a 1-star if I ever have a positive experience with them. read more

July 1st, 2017 - Went to the soft opening to support Farmstand 59. Met the operator, Ollie, who is passionate about organic locally sourced agriculture. She was extremely helpful with imparting knowledge about the organic farm and the produce grown there. Anything I can do to support and promote locally grown organic agriculture (urban farming) I'm down for. I believe in supporting the community makes a strong community. However, here's the down side: I can't afford their organic food when I shop for fresh produce weekly. At Farmstand 59, I was unprepared for the pricing and didn't know it was going to be that expensive - so didn't buy much.... just around $18 for 1 avocado, 1 lemon, 2 fuji apples, 5 small onions. I'm not kidding!! I am a frugal spender when it comes to groceries. I'm the one counting every penny spent at the grocery store making sure I'm getting the best deal. At Farmstand 59, the prices seemed a bit higher than the organic produce at the grocery store. For example, at Farmstand 59 just one organic avocado is $4, just one organic fuji apple is $2, just one organic lemon is $2, just one bag of organic lettuce is $7. In my naiveté, I believed by cutting out the middle man (grocery stores) and going straight to supporting my local farming community for locally sourced organic produce the pricing would be much better. Boy was I wrong! Lesson learned.... Farm Lot 59 is a non-profit organization, but with that kind of pricing I question the accessibility of naturally grown organic healthy produce to the Long Beach community because people with a family to feed, people on a budget, and people who are financially under privileged cannot afford to buy here and support the local farm in their own community - which this is unfortunate. With that said I am giving 5 stars because I DO believe in locally sourced organic agriculture and do wish Farm Lot 59 all the best of luck. read more

Farm stand has a small quantity but great variety of produce, eggs, and meat! Got a very excellent sandwich here, as well, made on a fresh baguette. The goods comes from local farms such as Tenerelli Orchards, Weiser Farms, and Electric City meats. I recommend stopping here to supplement your groceries. All organic and local! read more

Just experienced a private cooking class for 6 adults by Chef Ollie who runs the farm lot now and just reopened it. The class was extreme informative, casual and fun! She used all her locally sourced ingredients to teach us knife skills, introduce new veggies, how to plate and make beautiful dishes out of simple ingredients. I definitely recommend her for your catering needs, group functions or any of her locally sourced food. I can't wait to go to the lot on Saturdays! read more

Love this little piece of heaven off of spring street. We buy produce from farm lot weekly and appreciate the effort they are putting back in to keeping it local and fresh. it is super apparent in the product. second saturdays are fun as well. classes and yummy food by artisan vendors. score. brought my daughter here just so she can actually she chickens and where eggs come from. I have been wanting to visit this farm for a while and meet with the owner/founder. Today was my first and last time visiting this farm. It was evident that owner, Sasha Kanno, was completely quick to brush me off and not willing to answer any of my questions. I had high hopes of discussing her educational programs and her community outreach opportunities, but even though there were no other costumers at this time, she made it very clear that she wasn't interested. read more

Stopped by Farmstand 59 this morning and was very impressed with the selection! The farm fresh eggs are nothing like you can find in any store. I came home with eggs, peaches, oranges, apples, onions, and even a small flower arrangement made on site from items grown on the farm. Ollie, the operator of the farmstand takes great pride in the produce at the stand, and it shows. Farmstand 59 is truly one of Long Beach's hidden gems! read more

Disappointed. I have been looking forward to going to the Saturday opening since I learned of it. Finally got the opportunity yesterday. It completely felt like a for profit business masquerading as a non-profit. A program like this should be accessible to the community. It wasn't. - $10 for a dozen eggs (yes, that was really the price). They can't even blame it on the cost of transportation since the chickens are 15 feet from the farm stand - $3 for two cucumbers. There was a food booth at the event also (separate company). A egg sandwich - bread, cheese, bacon, egg = $9.99. We joked they must be selling the golden egg. Worse yet, per their website their volunteers are "charged", yes "charged" $10 an hour if they are unable to perform the scheduled hours. Make it fun and inviting - you won't have problems getting more volunteers than you know what to do with... I'd LOVE to support something like this but unless things change, I'm not going back. read more

Pioneering Urban Ag in LA county! I researched my local farmers and Farm Lot 59 is about as local as it gets. This organic farm is a great place to get to know what it takes to grow chemical-free food in our urban Southern California climate and to see how much commercial ag has distorted how we understand food. The cutest stand with the sweetest owner, Ollie! Everything looked delicious and beautiful and so picturesque. My kids and I shared a yummy sandwich and the dried apple slices in a bag (my kids said they tasted like candy even though it's just dried apples. You have to try them!) If you're looking for locally organically grown food in an urban setting, this is where it's at. Farmer Sash and the Farm Lot 59 crew work their butts off to produce clean food in an urban farm setting. The eggs are from chickens that are right there behind the farmstand. They have workshops about gardening and farming, and all produce is heirloom varieties and organically grown. You can be certain that your food is coming from a trusted source--you can chat the farmer up when you buy it! Their prices might seem high at first glance, but it's a small price to pay for wholesome clean food produced by a local Long Beach resident.
