You sound like a pretentious prat if you go around saying "I follow food trends", but…read moreanyone on instagram who checks out #tacos, has seen EVERYONE posting about birria for the last couple of years. Places have been popping up around the metroplex, some restaurants have gotten on board, but the trucks seem to be the ones going all in. I am one of those people who believe the best tacos come out of trucks and gas stations, and I appreciate a small business focusing on having a smaller menu and doing it really well. This is a truck parked on Berry St. It is not in the best location, but it is easy to get to from either 287 or 820. It is a bright yellow truck and they have a banner set up on the road letting you know that this is where the tacos are. On to the tacos. I ordered 3 birria tacos and the consume. Came out to $9 and they only take cash or zelle. I was told it would be 10 minutes and they would bring them to my car. It didn't take that long and soon I had a very FULL plate of tacos. They are not skimping on their filling over here. They were piping hot and super crispy. If you don't know, it is a stewed meat that is shredded. The tortillas are dipped in the liquid and then put on the flat top where it fries from the fat from the meat. The shells turn a lovely orange color from the spices and soak up all that flavor before becoming wonderfully crispy. They melt cheese on the tortilla before filling it with shredded beef. If you get the consume, you dip your tacos in the same wonderful liquid that has been cooking with the meat all day. The tacos were so flavorful, that the consume was not needed, though delicious. These are tacos you want to eat immediately before the juicy filling takes away the crunch and integrity of the tortillas. Three tacos were substantial. I had trouble finishing them, but I managed. They are packed up with two different salsas, the green is very tasty and mild, the red brings the heat and some tang to cut the richness of the beef and cheese. You also get raw AND grilled onions, cilantro, and lemons. They gave me a good amount of napkins, but I was glad to have a stash in my glove box, because this is going to be a messy experience. And I mean that in a good way. Just maybe don't wear white. These are seriously the best birria tacos I have had yet. The people were friendly and the value is great.

So yesterday (10/3/2012) Keller had it's first pop-up food truck event. I was very happy to catch wind of it, for I'm usually late to the party when it comes to events. In attendance were Gastro Bomber and So-Cal Tacos (http://www.yelp.com/biz/so-cal-tacos-fort-worth). My plan was to order something from each truck, one as a way to show support, and two, well because I'm a glutton and wanted to try both. I looked over both menus and came to a decision. From GB it was going to be the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich. I've been wanting C&Ws forever, from anywhere, and tonight was finally my night to try this item. The first thing to point out is it was not really a "sandwich" unless you want to stretch it and call it an open-faced sandwich. Second, it was not a full-sized waffle, but rather something rectangular. It consisted of three pieces of boneless chicken and a drizzle of maple syrup. Cost, $8. It was very good. The chicken was tender and the waffle delicious. What I noticed, and confirmed, is that there is corn meal in the waffle batter. I was told this is the Southern twist they like to add to there food. It was like Belgian cornbread. Yummy! Now I will add my wife's comment, which seem to be true of all food trucks, is that the cost to quantity ratio seems to be a little high. Three large tenders on essentially half a waffle for 8 bucks seems a bit much. Now I came up with a new take on the cost and that is this; One, your getting to try something new and somewhat unique. Two, and here's the kicker, your bottom line cost is perhaps a bit less than if you sat down in a restaurant. If tips are expected at food trucks, I did not see any obvious vessel for the cash to go in. You can bring your own drinks, and thus your bottom line for a unique dining experience really is not bad. I for one am glad this came together. I was excited when I learned that Keller might be getting it's own food truck park, and was disappointed when I learned the plans were not approved. Somehow I think Keller's loss will be Roanoke's gain (Actually Corina T., aka the "shark lady", who I met at this event said that). From this point forward I will keep track of food trucks coming to Keller, and there are definitely a few more items on GB's menu I would like to try (Irish Nachos, Shepherd's Pie Croquettes, Fish and Chips, Picanha Sandwich). PS. If you missed it, they will be back in the same spot (at the CVS at the NE corner of 1709 and Rufe Snow) next week, 10/10/2012 from 5 to 8PM. One quick tip: Do bring your own chairs!
