I eat here a lot because it's near where I work, you can custom-make your lunch to suit your own weird perfectionist standards, and the staff is super-nice.
Famish'd is kind of a high-end salad and spud bar that's also known for its coffee (I personally don't like coffee so I can't comment on that -- I know, I should be banished from Melbourne city limits, right?) I think there's a Famish'd in St Kilda and another one in the CBD too but I always go the location inside the Galleria building at Bourke & Elizabeth.
I love their spuds, so that's usually what I get. You can do regular baked potato or sweet potato, which gets split in half and mashed down all yummy and then a bunch of ingredients of your choosing get piled up on top, followed by a sauce of your choosing. Oh the deliciousness. I normally get the Healthy Touch spud, which is vegan if you specify no butter, and I sub the onions for another ingredient (usually chickpeas) for no charge. There's a dizzying array of ingredients you can choose from -- quinoa, avocado, chickpeas, fresh baby spinach, corn, cute little beetroot cubes, etc. This is true of the custom-built salads as well.
At first glance, Famish'd might be overpriced compared to, say, Spud Bar -- but the portion sizes here are ENORMOUS. I rarely make it through an entire Healthy Touch Spud during lunchtime, and if I do, I'm uncomfortably full. So even though you're spending upwards of $12-15 on your spud, it's enough for two lunches, which is pretty good value.
I also really like the staff here. The staff consists of genuinely friendly girls who MUST like their jobs because they've been there for aaaaages (and these kinds of places usually have high turnover).
This Galleria location has plenty of seating (including an outdoor space jutting out over Bourke St) but usually gets super crowded because it is pretty delicious and word has definitely gotten out, so I recommend getting in early if you want a table. If you just want to grab and go, the line moves pretty fast -- I've never waited longer than fifteen minutes even at peak lunch hour.
Famish'd is a good option if you're in the CBD and want a custom-built salad or spud that will last you through two lunches :) read more
