When I picked our son up from his shadow day at FMES, he said it was the best day of his life. Within a week he was more joyful than he'd ever been at our neighborhood school. Three years later, he has some of the sweetest friends and is the happiest I've ever seen him. This past weekend (end of spring break) he said he was missing school because he is really enjoying math. Our younger son has ADHD and is also thriving. The options and flexibility really work well for him. FMES feels different from the moment you walk through the door. It's a very warm and welcoming community. Having taught special education in public schools for twelves years it was tough for us to make the decision to switch but we could not be happier. I'm not a fan of all Montessori pedagogy, but they have such a wonderful blend of taking the best parts, and being flexible where it's not working. The leadership was incredibly thoughtful, patient, and communicative in dealing with the pandemic. I felt respected, heard, and most importantly, that our kid's safety AND education were being put at the forefront. Lastly, the environment is open to all sorts of people. The religious components are opt-in. We were literally in tears of joy after the tour, feeling that we had found a match for our family. To truly understand the impact Portland Christian has had in improving every aspect of our child's life you would've needed to know our history in the public school system. As the new kid the other students were welcoming. She had no problem making friends. She's had no issues being bullied. Their staff takes all issues serious. They don't let situations build up before intervening. I've never felt I was being bothersome when requesting things or asking questions. My child feels emotionally supported when having a down day. She's not trying to stay home anymore. She's trying new sports to be part of the team. She's the courageous confident kid she was before the pandemic. Even when several other children came forward to say that they felt uncomfortable with this other kid in the classroom, again, it was not taken seriously. She is always doing what she can to get answers to parents questions, and if she doesn't know the answer she gets it. Even with the covid restrictions, the staff here have done everything they can to keep the school open and healthy. I am really liking the summer camp program that the pre-k class started last month, Road Trip Summer Adventure. Each week they travel (pretend) to a different state to learn about things that stand out in history, events, or places. It's awesome knowing that they have a curriculum that fits every child's needs of learning and interest.
