I was a patient at Ithaca Family Medicine for 15 Years. and they were great. Since they have switched over the CMA -- ca. 2022 -- they are the most incompetent, unsympathetic, rude and even illiterate set of "medical" practitioners that I have ever encountered (I use scare quotes because I don't really know that what they do should qualify as medicine, so much as abuse). They are incapable of refilling medications on time, often schedule, cancel or change appointments without informing me, and my medical plan is occasionally changed -- seemingly on a whim -- by practitioners with whom I have never spoken., and who know nothing of my history or chart. The attitude towards health, in general, is putative: you are at fault for requiring a refill on time of a daily medication that they have prescribed (and they often even argue with you about the pharmacy where you wish to pick it up, suggesting less convenient alternatives), you are a nuisance if you require an appointment, and you will generally be "scolded"in a demeaning and dehumanizing way if you are not aware of policy changes of which they never informed you (or anyone else). Its really a shame, as the doctors were superb and erll-loved folks around town for years. But they have almost all retired or gone somewhere else. Now it is a travesty of ignorance mixed with anger and an utterly unfounded, unearned, and abused sense of authority. Horrible. I am 83 years old and I've been seeing a doctor there for almost 3 years. Finally dawned on me that he hadn't prescribed a physical exam and all of that time. In another instance I noticed A1C test that was outrageously high. Got no comment from the doctor and no follow up A1 C test. Their online patient portal can't be relied upon to transfer any of your messages to where they are needed. The whole Software effort is a joke, a sham so that they can say they have a patient portal, how miserable. From the reviews I've seen around for this company, it doesn't look like there's anybody minding the store. I guess that all of the doctors are operating independently and nobody is being careful that the organization has a good reputation. This one doesn't. This place is absolutely horrific. It is unbelievable that a medical practice could be so dysfunctional and disorganized. The staff are unreliable. Records are not faxed. Referrals are not made. Phone calls are not allowed to straighten things out. They tell you to use the "portal" no matter how sick you are and in complete contradiction of what your medical provider promised you. They discourage verbal communication. We once called and they let the phone ring 300 times. No answer. Had an illness that needed to be treated immediately with antibiotics or it would turn into a chronic long-term condition. Guess what? Due to their indifference and lack of response it turned into a long-term condition. They have "blockers" told to discourage you from getting an appointment and getting help. The patient is forced to grovel and beg for their health care and follow-up appointments. Stupid, stupid place. read more

They will say you have no payments to make after your appointments and then a few months later will hit you with a bunch of late fee bills and claim that they "tried to contact you through phone", which is false. There are "a few" things to like about this place. They have a couple of great doctors and nurse practitioners, but some of the other staff members are amazingly bad. The last time that I went here, I had to call ahead three times for information about certain forms and every person that I talked to gave me completely different information after putting me on hold for a half hour each time. At least the first two were friendly, but the last person -who I ended up meeting at the door- was incredibly disrespectful. When I finally got to the office and she came to the door (because of Covid regulations about entering the building), I asked her several questions and she proceeded to dramatically role her eyes right in front of me and then treated me like I was stupid and wasting her time... and I still ended the day feeling like I had received no actual answers. I actually feel kind of bad for writing a review like this because I know how stressful certain jobs can be, but if you work in a healthcare related environment, having an at least superficially friendly demeanor and some vague knowledge of your job description seems like it would be important and really shouldn't be THAT challenging. Although some of the actual medical staff are great, I've had a number of bad experiences with people in the past. For one, I once ended up seeing a nurse practitioner who in the past had suggested that my family take alternative medicine that "you can't touch because then it won't work." I asked her about a lump, she lifted up my shirt, didn't look at it and then told me I was fine before leaving the room. I waited about an hour for this. Another time, I went in because of extreme pain that I was experiencing in my throat and some very bad ear blockage. The first nurse that I saw shoved q-tips into my ears, making the problem worse and then without asking how I felt, walked away and never returned. I then had to ask a second time to have the problem dealt with by the doctor who ended up seeing me. When I asked about the severe pain in my throat that was making it difficult for me to talk/eat/breathe, she shined a light there for one second and told me that she couldn't see anything and that I would be fine. I repeatedly asked her if she was sure and she seemed perfectly confident in her judgement without looking a second time. I later ended up going to the hospital because of how severe the pain had gotten and it turned out that my entire throat was completed covered in large soars because of an infection and they prescribed me a bunch of meds that got rid of the issue in only a few days. I was happy to have dealt with the issue, but was also pretty angry that I was made to put up with this pain much longer than I needed to because of some unhelpful medical staff at Family Medicine... Going to this place is really a gamble and I can't say that I recommend it because you don't often come out winning... read more

I had been seeing Dr. Shallish for 20 years without a problem. Then he gave me some blatant false and irresponsible information about my Chantix prescription awhile back. I was so insulted and angered I stopped seeing him. Then when I tried to switch to another Dr. at Family Medicine I was subsequently told they would no longer see me and I needed to find another GP. I was given no explanation for this. Very rude and irresponsible way to treat a long-time patient. Move on. read more

These MD's, and when I say MD's... I mean when it comes down to it, they are just people... I've had the worst interaction with them when my family first moved to Ithaca. Everything was great until Covid. The NP that we were all seeing was no longer there, so I saw a different NP. She was nice, however didn't have the time to get to know me as the previous NP. Then during this whole pandemic, they dropped me, and my ENTIRE family because I had an unpaid balance, which I tried to pay, sadly, the billing never answered my calls. I'm now left in the dark... with these so said Doctors helping me get off my medication. So SAD! read more

I have been coming to this facility for over 20 years. The doctor I see is quite frankly the BEST general practitioner I have ever had (and yes I've tested out a few others when I moved out of the area but no one could beat the treatment I get here). It's worth the drive to see him. He has been assisting me with some chronic issues and is very good at offering treatment I find acceptable. I'm not a big pill taker and he's never pushed medicines that I wouldn't want nor would I take. He takes his time with me and I never feel rushed. Of course this means you often wait awhile because he's taking the right amount of time with everyone he sees, but it's well worth it. I never get a brush off. I will truly be hurting the day he retires but till then, I am blessed to have found him. read more

My experience has been good. I believe my doctor keeps well informed about changing health care issues, listens to me, and we make informed decisions together about my health care. I regularly have blood work taken/done at the both local offices, which makes it convenient. Staff is polite and professional. Sometimes the office chain of information has a glitch, but I believe that a patient should take the responsibility to follow up and make sure that diagnosis matches the bill etc. The online patient portal website works well with good security, and Patient history is quickly available. read more

The staff is incredibly unfriendly. Making my first appointment with them was a disaster, the three people I talked to didn't know what they were doing and I was on the line for 20 minutes. THREE PEOPLE didn't know how to add a new patient or make an appointment. I've worked in a dentist office, it's not that hard. Once I was able to make one and went in the front staff was completely unfriendly- a little smile doesn't hurt folks. The nurse I saw for my appointment was rude. When describing some of my anxiety she rudely responded with "I can't fix your financial issues". I wasn't asking for a loan Nurse, I was asking for some help. The only woman who was friendly and seemed to enjoy her job was the last nurse to come in to give me my flu shot. If it wasn't for her I would not return. Hopefully her kindness and cheerful attitude will rub off on the rest of the staff. read more

Tried to take a family member with no insurance. We were willing to pay for services at the time of being seen but was refused service because of a prior billing issue. I understand the patient had a prior bill but the family was trying to help out and willing to pay (and paid off the bill) but the clinic still refused to see him. read more

New to area. Had a great experience with NP Judy. She was very thorough with my exam. Need to be seen right away and got in same day. Lab is located right on site and got results 2 hr later. The blood draw was a little more painful then most. I am unsure about their doctors, but my NP was awesome! read more

I am very happy with my primary care physician, Dr. Alan Midura, and the NP I have seen twice, Nicole Serrano. They were friendly, helpful; and of particular value to me, they took the time to listen, explain and talk with my about why I was there and the treatment they were recommending. This place is overburdened and understaffed. Everyone is nice and doing their best but they just don't have the time to properly treat you. I've had all kinds of misdiagnoses/wrong medications/etc. because they're so rushed. Chaos at the front end too. Often can't get through by phone and wait after check-in is unnecessarily long. I have been using Family Medicine for over 30 years and have always received excellent care. Their evening and Saturday hours make appointments easy to schedule. They can perform many lab tests right on site which is very convenient. read more

Unbelievable. I paid out of pocket to see a Doctor about a rash which turned out to be Lyme disease. However, I didn't even get to see a Dr. Instead, I was misdiagnosed by an incompetant Nurse Practitioner who took a quick look and said that it wasn't Lyme. Meanwhile, weeks go by and I develop an acute case of Lyme Disease which was completely debilitating. I was in the worst pain imaginable thanks to these idiots who were ever so quick to hand me a bill. I have never heard of a 10 minute $230+ office visit with a nurse practitioner. Front office staff is shockingly rude, so I stopped going even though the doctor I've seen here happens to be good. Specifically I've been chastised for not going frequently enough and have been accused of "jumping around to different doctors" even though I'm just a student here and don't live here all the time. I would absolutely not recommend this practice. With office staff and phone attendants, I always strive to be patient and understanding, as I understand from previous jobs that dealing with the public can be frustrating (and everyone has bad days). But despite my patience and polite attitude, the staff is extremely rude and makes no effort to help clients. EVEN the supervisors/managers. I saw a nurse practitioner for a urinalysis (which cost over $100 for my five minute appointment since they charged me an office visit with an MD, who I never saw) and charged my insurance for my visit, as usual. All was quiet until now, a few months later, when I received a bill with the full urinalysis charge plus FIVE billing services charges totaling an additional $100. When I called to politely inquire about these extra charges, the billing department (I spoke with the manager, Sharon), was curt, rude, and frankly unhelpful. She stated that the bills they sent to me by mail were not delivered (returned), and apparently the office had tried to contact me by phone and left messages, but did not hear back. I have examined my phone records and my voicemail and have no record of any calls from Family Associates since my visit, and this is the first bill I have received by mail. I stated that I am more than happy to pay my balance right away, but as this is my very first receipt of this bill, I would like to dispute the numerous billing service charges. Sharon insisted that I should have called shortly after my appointment to ask them why I hadn't received a bill, and demeaningly stated that the collection agency would be contacting me with the full charges. Not once did I raise my voice, present attitude, get frustrated, or even criticize - an ounce of understanding on Sharon's part and perhaps a slight willingness to work with me would have been appreciated, but was apparently too difficult to ask for. Avoid at all costs. I probably need to be treated for headaches just for dealing with this medical practice. read more

I have gone to this practice for the better part of 4 years. I don't specifically have any issues with the doctors at this practice (except mine left the practice). What I do have a problem with is the staff the normally answers the phone. No one calling a doctors office needs these ladies on the other line. They are condescending and rude. I'm sure they are asked to do a lot but after speaking with one of them today I will no longer go to this practice. read more

I thought I had scheduled a check-up, but apparently since I mentioned I might want to bring up some headaches during the appointment, they changed the status of the appointment to a "sick" appointment (?). I saw a nurse practitioner who listened to my heart, took my blood pressure, and looked in my ears and throat. We talked for maybe 5-7 minutes about headaches, but she wasn't telling me anything the average person doesn't already know. I told her my headaches had subsided since I'd made the appointment and that I really didn't need to talk about them much, but I guess since it was on the chart she was supposed to ask me about them. Appt was probably 10-12 minutes long in total. I figured it wasn't the end of the world because I get check-ups for free, but then I got a $230 bill in the mail! I guess it *sort of* wasn't a "check up" because I mentioned headaches when I made the appointment, but what a sneaky move! I had asked specifically for a check up when I made the appointment.
