One of - okay THE - nicest playground I've been to so far…read more It is always clean. There are plenty of benches for weary caregivers to rest while the kids run around and burn off that endless supply of energy. There are two play structures, both with slides and an array of climbing structures separated by a fence. One side for tots and one for older kids. There's a substantial set of swings (6 total - one for all ages). The playground is adjacent to a set of large baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts. There is no parking lot but I've never had trouble finding an on street space on beautiful LaGrange street. Its proximity to the plenty of shops and restaurants along Centre Street lend to making the visit to the playground a multi-purpose outing. I know how much effort it took to get the kids loaded up and out the door - so let's make the most of it! While it can get busy, it's never been so overwhelmingly crowded that my introverted personality couldn't handle it. I've always been very comfortable with the amount of kids and guardians. This is our favorite playground in the city so far, it has become our regular spot.

Just to get…read moreout of the city first a bit into a well-preserved and landscaped beautiful lush green space with evergreens and oaks and gardens. It's free every day! There's a visitor center, where they have clippings of flowers that are labeled for easy identification and appreciation. Also throughout the arboretum are little plaques identifying flora. We went up to see the view of Boston from Peter's Hill and walked alongside the blooming mountain laurel bushes. Walkable paths are asphalt or wood chips. We saw a wild turkey, several robins, and occasional people. Super glad we explored this wondrous place!

They used to have hedge? Carvings of animals and stuff which was super cool. Didn't see that today but not sure, we didn't have time to check the whole arboretum. I think this place is so cool, there's families walking, roller blading, skating, biking etc dog walking you name it. It's clean in there so please keep it that way if visiting. There are ample signs of the types of trees, plants, and different zones. Porta potty available on the paths, resting chairs, benches and even spreads for a picnic. Friend had his wedding there not long ago. Easy commute from Forrest Hills train station on the orange line and walk up the street. Multiple gates to go in from, but main gate closed to cars at 4pm i think. The arboretum is closed at dusk. Beautiful walk on a beautiful day.

I am a happy repeat customer of Sportsmen's for summer camp for my kids. The team there, headed by…read morean amazing and humble Ms. Nadine Houston, runs a tight ship and I am always amazed and impressed at how they set high expectations of the kids (behaviorally) and have the kids actually listen. The summer camp schedule is pretty suitably structured for kids, comprised roughly of 65% tennis, 25% other sport activities (ball games, swimming daily, rock climbing field trip, MFA field trip) and 10% reading and board game time (these are just my estimates, check with the instructors to get exact info of course). There is time set aside for AM and PM snack as well as lunch. There is a water fountain for kids to fill up on water, as it gets hot. Sportsmen's is being considered to be the host of tennis games for the Boston 2024 Olympics, and the executive director Ms. Toni Wiley delivered a great interview on local TV recently about their involvement in the community, and partnerships with schools etc.; a lot of which I was not aware of. Their down-to-earth but realistic and professional attitude made me feel proud of them which is what prompted me to write this review. The organization added a new health and wellness wing in collaboration with BWH in July 2015 and they will start having exercise classes there in the fall. I think this is an important addition to the neighborhood and a valuable example to follow. (Took one little star away as it could use a more air conditioning, although to be fair they do have a large indoor space to cool off so it could be hard)

Some of the stuff is a little run down/dirty but considering it's free you really can't complain. There are many repeat toys in case it's crowded there should be something for everyone. It has two large connected play structures, a swing set, see-saw, a sand box, tons of toys and bikes that have been generously donated for a chance at a second life. The place gets crazy busy though. The after work crowd on a weekday is enough to incite a panic attack - especially for a newbie playground mom like myself, and quite frankly, I'm petrified of even trying to go on a weekend. That's not to say there isn't room for everyone, though. With the plethora of benches and tables, there really is room for everyone. D There are tons of abandoned (okay: "donated") toys left around - for the sand box and for kids to ride on, play in, etc. which adds to the play options. I love the access from here to the pond; it makes taking a walk around the pond before or after the playground a nice option. Not to mention all the shops and restaurants right on Center Street as well. There is easily accessible parking behind the playground - it is the public parking lot in JP behind Blanchards. It is 2 hours only, but that is usually more than enough time to get in and out of the playground. It's nice to not have to troll around for a parking spot.
