I went towards the end of the evening near closing time, so the cookies and pastries had already been picked over quite a bit. Luckily, I was here to get a gingerbread man, and I picked out the cutest one ever (see photos)! I've rarely met a gingerbread I didn't like, and this version was a-okay. It wasn't as spicy as I'd like, but it had a nice chewy crunch to the cookie that made the texture quite satisfying. Of course, as is my method, I nibbled off his arms and legs first. I'm not such a fan of the icing, and Gilg's version I found quite bland. It was sweet, but not tasty. My cookie was individually wrapped in plastic which made it easy to reseal to enjoy later. I was able to take a few more nibbles on my train to Paris the next afternoon. And did I mention how stinking cute the cookie was? The little wide eyes and "o" face...just adorable. I could see these making excellent gifts to take home from Europe, if you could keep the cookies from breaking during transit. The other goods on offer looked tasty, but if the gingerbread man is any indication, this may be one of those "all looks, bland taste" type of bakeries. I wish I had tried something else, but my main reason to visit was merely "just okay."

But then, 2 days later, I was blown away by a Paris-Brest like eclair -- think éclair shaped sandwich of buttery pastry with almond cream filling sprinkled with powdered sugar and crumbled toasted almonds. I'd return to Strasbourg for that dessert. Back to the night before: both our hosts and we were transported by the Mont Blanc, a chestnut and cassis dessert that was unique in both appearance and flavor. Don't miss it. Our hosts, both French born, said they'd never tasted such a delicious version of that dessert, and that the addition of cassis was unique and genius of this pâtissier. Also, for what it's worth, the elegant woman in the shop was lovely. In short, for the best French pastry in Strasbourg, don't bother going elsewhere.

We weren't sure of the ordering procedures up here -- one of the staff motioned to me to go over to the pastry case -- I wasn't sure if it was self-serve or not -- but I sat back down and waited. I requested a holiday spice tea -- they said they were out -- and the rest of our party ordered hot chocolate. It was rich and thick and served in mugs (like cacao bean), and although good, some expressed that it wasn't the best they'd had. I was served a rich chocolate pastry and tea. The warm and cozy ambiance is the best part. Purchase chocolates in the shop downstairs before you leave.

Unfortunately there was nothing special about either things to me that would make me want to go back. They were good, but nothing that stood out to make it exceptional. I've had numerous pain au chocolats and this tasted like the rest. The pretzel was good and soft, which I liked but the cheese was only in the middle and not much on the outside. I've had better tasting pretzels for sure. It was a decent place, but not as hyped up as it was made out to be.

The lady at the counter was really nice and explained all the options. She spoke excellent English so that was a plus. I had the rhubarb crumble and chocolate cheesecake. The rhubarb was fantastic! It had a great taste and wasn't too sweet. The chocolate cheesecake was ok. If you are used to American cheesecake, the taste is different and won't be the taste or texture you are expecting.
